One day, he had a quarrel with his wife. Muttering to himself, he stormed out of the house, thinking,
“I’ll never talk to this quarrelsome woman again. Who does she think she is? Always arguing, never lets me live in peace!”
He reached a nearby tea stall, ordered a cup of tea, and sat down on a stool.
Just then, a voice from behind said,
“Drinking tea outside in such cold weather?”
He turned around and saw an old man sitting on the stool behind him.
He replied, “You too are out in this cold at this age, Baba?”
The old man smiled and said,
“I live all alone, son. No family, no partner. But you seem married.”
He sighed and said,
“My wife doesn’t let me live in peace, Baba! Always nagging… If I don’t step out, I’ll go crazy. She’s turned life into a living hell.”
The old man softly said,
“She doesn’t let you live?
Son, life is your wife.
It’s been eight years since mine passed away.
I never valued her when she was alive.
Now that she’s gone, I can’t forget her.
The house feels like a prison.
The kids are busy in their own lives.
I have a big house, wealth, everything... but without her, there’s no joy.
I wander here and there, never at peace.
Only after she left did I realize—
she was the heartbeat,
not just of my life, but of our home too.
Now everything feels lifeless.
But you… you still have time, son.
Go, live your life with love.
Otherwise, you’ll regret it later—just like me.”
Tears welled up in the old man’s eyes, and they carried the weight of a deep pain.
The man paid for his tea, looked at the old man once more, and without wasting a minute, turned toward home.
From a distance, he saw her — his wife — standing at the door, eyes full of worry and tears, watching for him.
“Where did you go? You didn’t even wear a jacket, you’ll catch a cold!”
He gently replied,
“And you’re standing here without a sweater?”
In that moment, through their eyes,
they read the love they held for one another.
Often, we too make such mistakes in life.
Not just with our wives,
but with our parents, uncles, aunts, siblings, or close friends —
we get angry in ways that hurt not only them, but us as well.
Life is short.
Sometimes, we need to forgive — and sometimes, ask for forgiveness — and move forward with a smile.
Because in the journey of life,
some moments pass…
and never return.
