Theme: Balancing Our Life Pursuits with God's Work
Key Text: "But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and the cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly." — Luke 21:34
Introduction
The Apostle Paul admonished the believers that those who had once stolen should steal no more, but rather labor with their own hands so that they may provide for themselves and also have something to share with those in need (Ephesians 4:28).
The Scriptures encourage us to work diligently, earn honestly, and become a blessing to others. From the beginning, God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and take care of it (Genesis 2:15). This demonstrates that God created humanity to be productive, resourceful, and not lazy.
In 1 Thessalonians 4:11, Paul further exhorts believers to work quietly, mind their own business, and labor with their own hands. Likewise, Proverbs 20:13 warns against laziness, reminding us that diligence brings provision.
However, while God commands us to work, He also warns us not to allow the cares and pursuits of this life to consume our hearts.
The Purpose of Man's Creation
To glorify God.
To enjoy fellowship with God.
These remain God's primary purpose for every believer.
Balancing Life Pursuits with God's Work
Today, many people are more focused on financial success, careers, businesses, and material possessions than on their relationship with God. Sadly, many have neglected the very reason for which God created them.
The pursuit of life's necessities and ambitions has caused many to become forgetful of God. This is especially evident among many men who become so occupied with work and business that they have little or no time left for God's kingdom. Meanwhile, many women, despite their numerous responsibilities, still prioritize their commitment to the church and the things of God.
Our earthly pursuits should never replace our devotion to God.
Jesus taught that whoever loves anything more than Him is not worthy of Him (Matthew 10:37–39). God must always occupy the highest place in our hearts.
Beware of Forgetting God
In Deuteronomy 8:11–13, Moses warned Israel:
"Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by failing to keep His commandments."
Prosperity and success can become dangerous if they lead us away from God. The blessings God gives should draw us closer to Him, not farther away.
Proverbs 30:7–9 records the prayer of Agur, who asked God neither for poverty nor riches, but for daily provision so that he would neither deny God through abundance nor dishonor Him through lack. This teaches us the importance of contentment and dependence upon God.
The Bible also teaches believers to work diligently and not become idle (2 Thessalonians 3:10–12). God desires both faithful workers and faithful worshippers.
Charge to the Men
God has sent this word especially to admonish the men: do not allow the pursuit of wealth, career, business, or success to make you neglect your responsibility before God.
The pressures of life are increasing, and spiritual backwardness has become common. Therefore:
Hold fast to the confession of your faith.
Do not waver.
Remain steadfast in God's work.
Let neither prosperity nor adversity separate you from Christ.
Continue to seek first the Kingdom of God, trusting Him to provide all your needs.
Conclusion
God expects His children to be diligent workers, responsible providers, and faithful servants in His Kingdom. There must be a healthy balance between earning a living and serving the Lord.
May we never become so busy making a living that we forget the One who gave us life. Let our work glorify God, and let our lives remain firmly rooted in His presence.
