A Chant to Àyángalú1

O minstrels' true spirit

Who at its skill makes

One eat food of a miser,

A good morning to you.

You who makes one walk

The road never known as

If it's a familiar labyrinth

I hope you slept well?

The genie that speaks

Volume from inside its

Wooded abode to set a

Pace for dance steps.

Bright brain behind band

Rhythm that spells love,

Emotions and affection

To all exquisite damsels.

Your descendants are joy

To all the village girls;

Friend to all socialites

And delight of the nobles;

Their magic fingers make

Many a young lass aptly

Grab the hands of their

Lappa to trigger their

Waist into fine squirm till

Refreshing sweats flood

Their skin such that lads

Consider them all wifely:

All from the lifeless goat

That speaks like human

At the marriage of kọ̀ngọ́2

And àyàn3 during all fests.

That gángan4 drum could

Speak in human nasal is

Not without the help of

Your finger nails. So I say

As Ṣẹ̀kẹ̀rẹ̀5 doesn't trail

Unadventurously in town,

So does your presence

Bring ecstasy and life.

I invoke today your spirit

On my plight and fate so

That my word may echo

And experience peace.
