MATTER ARISING
REPENTANCE is a word that comes to life each year the Christians observe the Lenten period. Two questions come to mind.
1. Is repentance relapsing ?
2. Is fasting closely correlates to repentance?
The answer to the two questions above is no.
Repentance is an act that occupies a vital place in the process of Salvation, thus it is once. If a convert did not get it right, the issue of yearly routine becomes a ritual , which is not Scriptural . Act.8: 13,22&23
What is repentance? By definition, it is the convinction of the errors committed ,and the readiness to forsake and make a u- turn, and never go back.
If the above definition is correct, then repentance is expected to occur once in a life time of a Christian ,Other things being equal,
in ideal situation , otherwise; Apostle Peter called it a corruptible activities , that is unproductive. 1 Pet.1:23.
For a repentance to be productive, we need to go through the three elements of REPENTANCE. These elements however had their inputs before any sin is committed.
1. Intellect Element
2. Emotions Element
3. Will Element
The above three elements were observed at the fall of our parents in the garden of Eden. The record of Gen. 3: 6. shows that Eve was concious of what she was doing ,and not under duress.
1. The tree was good for food
2. The fruit was pleasant to the eyes
3.And a tree to be desired to make one wise.
The above elements were put to test, and Eve was satisfied.
For a productive repentance to take place, It is not by any religious routine . The same three Elements must reflect . I will tell you why shortly.
The second issue is fasting. There is no way repentance is connected to fasting. Many believed that during the Lenten period, Sins are erased or forgiven. This is a lie. Forgiveness of Sin still hangs on the shedding of the blood of Christ, and faith in the ,death and resurrection of Christ. Heb . 9. 22.
Fasting is for Spiritual growth, while repentance is for Salvation. Salvation is a gift of grace through our faith in Jesus Christ and nothing is added. However , without being saved, Spiritual growth may encounter a set back ,as there is no good environment in terms of relationship with God. Scriptures make us to understand that God is the initiator of an encounter that leads to regeneration through the holy Spirit.
So for fasting to be accepted by God, there must be an establishment of a good relationship with him ,and repentance is a step in the process.
Let me come back to the issue the elements above.
1.The Intellectual Element:
Repentance is that change of a sinner's mind which leads him to turn from his evil ways and live. The change wrought in repentance is so deep and radical as to affect the whole spiritual nature and to involve the entire personality. The intellect must function, the emotions must be aroused, and the will must act. Psychology shows repentance to be profound, personal and all-pervasive. The intellectual element is manifest from the nature of man as an intelligent being, and from the demands of God who desires only rational service. Man must apprehend sin as unutterably heinous, the divine law as perfect and inexorable, and himself as coming short or falling below the requirements of a holy God ( Psalms 51:3; Romans 3:20 ).
2. The Emotional Element:
There may be a knowledge of sin without turning from it as an awful thing which dishonors God and ruins man. The change of view may lead only to a dread of punishment and not to the hatred and abandonment of sin (Exodus 9:27; Numbers 22:34; 1 Sam 12 13. An emotional element is necessarily involved in repentance. While feeling is not the equivalent of repentance, it nevertheless may be a powerful impulse to a genuine turning from sin. A penitent cannot from the nature of the case be stolid and indifferent. The emotional attitude must be altered if New Testament repentance be experienced. There is a type of grief that issues in repentance and another which plunges into remorse. There is a godly sorrow and also a sorrow of the world. The former brings life; the latter, death (Matthew 27:3; Matthew 26. 75 Corinthians 7:9 , . There must be a consciousness of sin in its effect on man and in its relation to God before there can be a hearty turning away from unrighteousness. The feeling naturally accompanying repentance implies a conviction of personal sin and sinfulness and an earnest appeal to God to forgive according to His mercy (Psalms 51:1 , Psalms 51:2 , Psalms 51:10-14 ).
3. The Will Element:
The most prominent element in the psychology of repentance is the voluntary, or volitional. This aspect of the penitent's experience is expressed in the Old Testament by "turn", or "return," and in the New Testament by "repent" or "turn." The words employed in the Hebrew and Greek place chief emphasis on the will, the change of mind, or of purpose, because a complete and sincere turning to God involves both the apprehension of the nature of sin and the consciousness of personal guilt (Jeremiah 25:5; Mark 1:15; Acts 2:38; 2 Corinthians 7:9 , 2 Corinthians 7:10 ). The demand for repentance implies free will and individual responsibility. That men are called upon to repent there can be no doubt, and that God is represented as taking the initiative in repentance is equally clear. The solution of the problem belongs to the spiritual sphere. The psychical phenomena have their origin in the mysterious relations of the human and the divine personalities. There can be no external substitute for the internal change. Sackcloth for the body and remorse for the soul are not to be confused with a determined abandonment of sin and return to God. Not material sacrifice, but a spiritual change, is the inexorable demand of God in both dispensations (Psalms 51:17.
What follows is new mind.
The Psalmist write in Chapter 51.vs 10. " Create in me a clean heart, O God,and renew a right spirit within me. "
People of God, Year 2022 Lenten period is here. You need to make up you mind in which you will have an encounter with God for a productive repentance. Then you can build a lasting relationship ,so to enjoy your Spiritual disclpine of fasting.
