GOING FURTHER WITH JESUS (III)

MEMORISE

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41).

READ:
Matthew 26:36-47

[36]. Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.”

[37]. And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.

[38]. Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

[39]. He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”

[40]. Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?

[41]. Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

[42]. Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.”

[43]. And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.

[44]. So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

[45]. Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

[46]. Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

[47]. And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people.

EXPOSITION

At Gethsemane, Jesus faced the most challenging moment of His mission on Earth. He took the remaining 11 disciples with Him. On the way, Jesus asked 8 disciples to remain in one spot while He went further with 3 others -- Peter James, and John -- whom He trusted to provide support. The eight disciples weren't really assigned any task than to wait. Hope you aren't an inactive and disconnected believer, failing to engage deeply in the walk with Christ

The 3 who went further had the privilege of witnessing Jesus' sorrow and distress. This intimate moment revealed how much Jesus desired their understanding and support. Many Christians today fail to recognise how their choices impact their relationship with Christ. Jesus shared His burden with the 3 and instructed them to watch and pray -- spiritual alertness and responsibility.

Sadly, even the 3 disciples fell asleep instead of keeping watch, reminding us of human frailty and the need for vigilance in our journey. Responsibility in God's kingdom is a privilege that demands commitment. Let us stay spiritually awake and go further with Jesus through consistent prayer and dedication.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, help me stay spiritually alert in my walk with You.

2. Father, forgive me for times I have failed in my responsibilities to You.

3. Lord Jesus give me the grace to stay watchful and prayerful always.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CACGHB: 571

10 10

1. Pray, always pray; the Holy Spirit pleads.
Within thee all thy daily hourly needs.

2. Pray, always pray; beneath sin's heaviest load
Prayer sees the blood from Jesus' side that flow'd.

3. Pray, always pray; though weary, faint, and lone,
Prayer nestles by the Father's shelt'ring throne.

4. Pray, always pray; amid the world's tur-moil
Prayer keeps the heart at rest, and nerves for toil.

5. Pray, always pray; if joys thy pathway throng.
Pray'r strikes the harp and sings the angels' song.

6. Pray, always pray, if loved one pass the veil.
Pray'r drinks with them of springs that cannot fail

7. All earthly things with earth shall fade away,
Pray'r grasps eternity, pray, always pray.

Amen.

MEMORISE

Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (Matthew 17:4).

READ:
Matthew 17:1-9

[1]. Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves;

[2]. and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.

[3]. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.

[4]. Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

[5]. While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”

[6]. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid.

[7]. But Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.”

[8]. When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

[9]. Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.”

EXPOSITION

Yesterday, we explored how Jesus raised Jairus' daughter and took 3 disciples further with him. Today, we examine the Transfiguration experience. Jesus took all 12 disciples to the base of a mountain but left 9 behind and went up with 3. This rare experience is only for the chosen few. No wonder they say, the top is for the few if we want to grow in our Christian journey and experience God more deeply, we must go further with Jesus.

At the top of the mountain, the 3 disciples witnessed God's glory and heard His voice directly. What a divine encounter! What are you experiencing in your Christian walk? Are you seeing God's glory and hearing from Him? Your spiritual experience is closely tied to how far you are willing to go with Jesus. At the mountaintop, the 3 disciples forgot everything below; they were so excited that they wanted to remain there forever!

When will you go further with Jesus to experience His glory and hear His voice directly? Stop depending on what others tell you about God. Crave a closer relationship with Jesus and grow in your faith

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, take me further in my walk with You to experience Your glory.

2. Father, help me leave behind distractions that keep me at a lower level.

3. Pray for CAC Publicity Department, the Director and other staff for God's help to create more awareness about the Church and the Gospel, in Jesus' name.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:

C M

1. O for a faith that will not shrink
Tho' press'd by ev'ry foe
But in the hour of grief or pain
Will lean upon its God.

2. This is incomprehensible
Yet will I fear no foe
With God all things are possible
His words shall never fail.

3. Lord, give us such a faith as this
That faith that never fails
A faith that keeps the narrow way
Till life's last spark is fled.

Amen.

GOING FURTHER WITH JESUS (I)

MEMORISE

But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, Do not be afraid: only believe, and she will be made well' (Luke 8:50).

READ:
Luke 8:49-56

[49]. While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.”

[50]. But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.”

[51]. When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl.

[52]. Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, “Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeping.”

[53]. And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead.

[54]. But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.”

[55]. Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat.

[56]. And her parents were astonished, but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

EXPOSITION

Jesus often related to His disciples based on their level of faith and spiritual maturity, as seen in various instances where He would ask nine disciples to stay behind while He went further with the other three. In today passage, Jairus invited Jesus to heal his dying daughter. Jesus agreed and began the journey to Jairus' house. However, a large crowd surrounded Him, slowing His movement. When they reached Jairus' house, Jesus allowed only few persons to go further with Him. What about the other nine disciples?

In our Christian journey, many follow Jesus, but some have no real expectations. They have not experienced God's wonders firsthand, they only hear about them. Others are like the spectators in Jairus' house, doubting miracles and quick to mock failures. Sadly, some believers stay behind with the crowd, missing deeper blessings of faith.

What we experience with God depends on our faith and maturity. To see His miracles and wonders, we must grow daily by walking closer with Christ. His works are progressive and going further with Him brings greater experiences of His power. Are you longing for God's miracles? Take steps of faith and go further with Jesus.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, increase my faith and help me to go further with You daily.

2. Father, remove every distraction that holds me back in my walk with You.

3. Pray for more of God's power and presence in CAC Anosike Region, in the life of our father, the Regional Superintendent, other officers and members at various levels, in Jesus' name.

All other ground is sinking sand.

2. When long appears my toilsome race,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil

3. His oath, His covenant, and blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When every earthly prop gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.

4. When the last trumpet's voice shall sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Robbed in His righteousness alone,
Faultness to stand before the throne.

Amen.

THE LIVING WATER [January-December, 2026]

DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE

DATE:
Tuesday, 25th August, 2026

TOPIC:
LOST IN THE CHURCH: HEAVEN REJOICES

MEMORISE

I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance (Luke 15:7).

READ:
Luke 15:7

[7]. I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.

EXPOSITION

When someone who is lost turns to God, heaven celebrates with great joy. Jesus explained this in His parables about the lost coin and the lost sheep. Every person is precious to God and He wants everyone to be saved. In Luke 15:7, Jesus tells us that there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over many righteous people who do not need repentance.

Sadly, some people in the Church are still lost. Like we observed in our previous doses, they attend services, sing and join activities, but they lack true relationship with God. It is our responsibility to help them find salvation.

In the story of the lost coin, the woman lit a lamp and searched carefully until she found it. This teaches us to put effort into helping the unsaved. The goal is not just to make people feel comfortable in the Church but lead them to eternal life in Jesus Christ through sound preaching/teaching of His Word.

Take this important task seriously. Heaven is waiting to rejoice over every sinner who turns to God around you. Pray for those around you, share the gospel with love and guide them to Christ. Your effort would bring people to salvation and fill heaven with great joy.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, help me to care deeply for the salvation of others.

2. Father, may my actions evangelistically bring joy in heaven.

3. Pray for CAC JABU, the principal officers, staff and students as led by God's Spirit.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CACGHB: 432

6 6 6 6 8 8

1. Blow ye the trumpet blow!
The gladly solemn sound
Let all the nations know,
To earth's remotest bound,
The year of jubilee is come!
Return, ye ransomed sinners, home.

2. Extol the Lamb of God,
The all-atoning Lamb;
Redemption by His blood
Throughout the world proclaim.

3. Ye, who have sold for nought
Your heritage above,
Receive it back unbought,
The gift of Jesus' love

4. Jesus our great High Priest,
Has full atonement made;
Ye weary spirits, rest;
Ye mournful souls, be glad.

5. Hearts that are weary, come
Rest on the Saviour's breast
Disconsolate heart, come
Be cheerful and rejoice.

Amen.
