Daily, Daily, sing to Mary,
Sing, my soul, her praises due;
All her feasts, her actions worship,
With the heart's devotion true.
Lost in wondering contemplation,
Be her majesty confessed:
Call her Mother , call her Virgin.
Happy Mother , Virgin blest,

She is mighty to deliver:
Call her, trust her lovingly;
When the tempest rages round you,
She will calm the troubled sea.
Gifts of heaven she has given,
Noble Lady! to our race;
She, the Queen, who decks her subjects
With the light of God's own grace.

Sing, my tongue, the Virgin's trophies,
Who for us her Maker bore,
For the curse of old inflicted, Peace and blessing to restore.
Sing in songs of praise unending,
Sing the world's majestic Queen:
We ary not nor faint in telling
All the gifts she gives to men.

All my senses, heart, affections
Strive to sound her glory forth:
Spread abroad the sweet memorials
Of the Virgin's priceless worth.
Where the voice of music thrilling,
Where the tongues of eloquence,
That can utter nile beseeming
All her matchless excellence?

All our joys do flow from Mary,
All of them join her praise to sing:
Trembling sing the Virgin Mother,
Mother of our Lord and King.
While we sing her awful glory,
Far above our fancy's reach,
Let our hearts be quick to offer
Love the heart alone can teach.

Our Lady of the Angels of the Portiuncula

Today, August 1, Marian history is closely associated with Our Lady of the Angels of the Portiuncula, one of the oldest and most cherished Marian shrines in the Franciscan tradition.

The Little Church of Mary
The Portiuncula, meaning "little portion of land," was a small, ancient chapel outside Assisi, Italy, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Saint Mary of the Angels. By the early 13th century, the chapel had fallen into disrepair.
Around 1205, Saint Francis of Assisi discovered the neglected chapel and felt called by God to restore it. He repaired it with his own hands, making it the spiritual home of the first Franciscans.

A Vision of Christ and Mary
According to Franciscan tradition, while praying in the Portiuncula, Saint Francis experienced a vision of Jesus Christ accompanied by the Blessed Virgin Mary and a multitude of angels.
Francis asked for a special grace: that anyone who visited the chapel with sincere repentance, after receiving the Sacraments, might obtain a plenary indulgence. Christ granted the request through the intercession of His Mother.

The Portiuncula Indulgence
The grace became known as the Portiuncula Indulgence or the Pardon of Assisi.
Originally, it could be gained only on August 2 by pilgrims visiting the little chapel. Over time, the privilege was extended to churches around the world under certain conditions, allowing countless faithful to participate in this spiritual gift.
Because the vigil begins on August 1, this day has long been marked by prayer and preparation for the feast.

Our Lady of Banneux, the Virgin of the Poor
One Marian event associated with July 31 is the devotion to Our Lady of Banneux, also known as the Virgin of the Poor, one of the major Church approved Marian apparitions of the 20th century.
The Apparitions
Between January 15 and March 2, 1933, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared eight times to an 11 year old Belgian girl named Mariette Beco in the small village of Banneux, Belgium.
During the apparitions, Mary identified herself with the words:
> "I am the Virgin of the Poor."
She led Mariette to a spring and said:
> "This spring is reserved for all nations, for the sick."
Mary's message was simple and direct. She called people to prayer, trust in God, and special concern for the poor, the suffering, and the sick.
The Healing Spring
The spring shown by the Virgin became the center of the shrine. Over the years, many pilgrims reported physical healings and spiritual conversions after praying there.
The Church carefully investigated the events. In 1949, the local bishop officially recognized the apparitions as worthy of belief. The devotion later received support from several popes.
Why It Is Important
Unlike some apparitions that contain dramatic prophecies, Banneux is remembered for its message of compassion.
Mary did not appear to a famous person or in a great city. She appeared to a poor child during a time of economic hardship and reminded the world that God's love is especially close to those who suffer.
Today, pilgrims from many countries continue to visit Banneux to pray for healing, peace, and help in difficult circumstances.
A Prayer
> Virgin of the Poor, Mother of Jesus and our Mother, obtain for us trust in God, comfort in suffering, and hearts that are open to the needs of others. Amen.

Why This Devotion Matters
The message of Our Lady of the Pillar is one of perseverance. Mary appeared to an exhausted missionary and encouraged him not to give up.
For nearly two thousand years, pilgrims have come to Zaragoza seeking strength in trials, confidence in God's plans, and the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
> Holy Mary of the Pillar, strengthen our faith, sustain our hope, and lead us always to your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Our Lady of the Pillar (Nuestra Señora del Pilar)
For July 30, one of the most notable events in Marian history is connected with Our Lady of the Pillar, regarded as the first recorded Marian apparition in Christian tradition.
According to ancient Spanish tradition, around the year 40 AD, the Apostle James the Greater was preaching the Gospel in what is now Zaragoza, Spain. His mission was proving difficult, and few converts were responding to his preaching.
Discouraged, James prayed for guidance and strength.
On the night of January 2, 40 AD, the Blessed Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to him while she was still living in Jerusalem. She appeared standing upon a pillar of jasper, accompanied by angels, and encouraged him to persevere in his mission. She asked that a chapel be built on that spot in her honor.
What makes this event unique is that it is traditionally believed to have occurred before Mary's Assumption, meaning it would have been a bilocation rather than an apparition from Heaven.
The Miracle of the Pillar
Mary reportedly left the pillar as a sign of her presence and protection. A small chapel was built there, becoming one of the earliest Marian shrines in Christianity.
Over the centuries, the shrine grew into the magnificent Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in the world.
The Miracle of Calanda
One of the most famous miracles associated with Our Lady of the Pillar occurred in 1640.
A young Spaniard named Miguel Juan Pellicer had lost part of his right leg after an accident. After years of disability and constant prayer before Our Lady of the Pillar, witnesses testified that his amputated leg was miraculously restored overnight.
Church and civil authorities conducted extensive investigations, interviewing dozens of witnesses. The event remains one of the most thoroughly documented miracles in Catholic history.

Our Lady of Ephesus
One of the most interesting Marian commemorations associated with July 29 is Our Lady of Ephesus, connected with the tradition that the Blessed Virgin Mary spent her final years near Ephesus in present day Turkey.
According to the Gospel of John, as Jesus was dying on the Cross, He entrusted His Mother to the care of the Apostle John:

> "Behold your mother."

Ancient Christian tradition holds that John later lived in Ephesus, and a long standing belief developed that Mary accompanied him there.
The modern history of this devotion is remarkable. In the early 1800s, the German mystic Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich described in great detail a small stone house on a hillside near Ephesus where she said the Virgin Mary had lived. She had never visited the region, yet her descriptions were so specific that priests and researchers later used them to search the area.
In 1891, explorers discovered the ruins of a small stone dwelling on a mountain near ancient Ephesus. The site became known as Meryem Ana, meaning "Mother Mary." Pilgrims soon began visiting it, convinced that it may be connected to the final earthly home of the Blessed Virgin.
Although the Church has never definitively declared that this was Mary's actual house, the site has received papal visits and approval as a place of pilgrimage and prayer. Millions of Christians and even many Muslims visit each year to honor the Mother of Jesus.
What makes this devotion special is that it focuses not on a dramatic apparition or public miracle, but on the hidden final years of Mary's life. Tradition portrays her spending those years in prayer, guiding the early Christians, and preparing for her Assumption into Heaven.
For many pilgrims, Our Lady of Ephesus is a reminder of Mary's quiet faithfulness after the great events recorded in the Gospels, a life of prayer, humility, and continual union with Christ.

Today the tiny chapel is preserved inside the magnificent Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels in Assisi. Pilgrims from around the world continue to visit the shrine, honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary and recalling the humble beginnings of the Franciscan movement.
The devotion reminds Christians that God often chooses the smallest and most hidden places to accomplish great things through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Our Lady of the Angels (Portiuncula)
Today, July 26, one of the most beautiful Marian traditions connected with this date is Our Lady of the Angels, centered on the tiny chapel known as the Portiuncula near Assisi, Italy.
The Little Chapel of Mary
Long before it became famous, the Portiuncula was a small, neglected chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Saint Mary of the Angels.
Around 1205, a young man named Saint Francis of Assisi came upon the abandoned chapel. While praying there, he felt called by God to restore it.
Francis personally repaired the building with his own hands. The chapel soon became the spiritual heart of the Franciscan movement and one of the most beloved Marian shrines in Christian history.
A Special Grace
According to Franciscan tradition, while Saint Francis was praying in the Portiuncula, he received a vision of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary surrounded by angels.
Francis asked for a special grace: that all who came to the chapel with sincere repentance might receive a plenary indulgence and be reconciled with God.
The request was approved by Pope Honorius III, and the "Pardon of Assisi" became one of the most famous spiritual privileges in the Church.
Why Mary Is Central
The chapel was dedicated to the Mother of God long before Francis arrived. He had a deep love for Mary and often referred to her as the Virgin who made the Lord of Majesty our brother.
Francis entrusted his followers to her protection, and many early Franciscans believed that the Blessed Virgin watched over the growing order in a special way.
Miracles and Pilgrimages
Over the centuries, countless pilgrims have visited the Portiuncula seeking conversion, healing, forgiveness, and spiritual renewal.
Many reported profound experiences of grace after praying in the chapel. Because of its association with both Saint Francis and the Blessed Virgin Mary, it became one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Italy.

Our Lady of Walsingham continued.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, interest in Walsingham revived. The shrine was rebuilt, pilgrimages resumed, and today hundreds of thousands of Christians visit each year seeking Mary's intercession and a deeper relationship with Christ.
Why It Matters
The message of Walsingham centers on the mystery of the Incarnation: that God became man through the "yes" of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
For nearly a thousand years, pilgrims have come to Walsingham to reflect on that mystery and to ask the Mother of God to lead them closer to her Son.
A traditional prayer is:
Our Lady of Walsingham, pray for us. Help us to welcome Christ into our hearts as you welcomed Him into the world. Amen.
