The Broken Cistern That Cannot Hold Water
Text: Jeremiah 2:13 (from the Bible)
There is a deep cry in the heart of God when He said, “My people have committed two evils; they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.” This scripture reveals not just sin, but a tragic exchange—leaving what is perfect for what is empty.
A cistern in ancient times was a man-made reservoir designed to store water. Unlike a spring, it had no life in itself; it depended on what was poured into it. Now imagine a cistern that is cracked—no matter how much water you pour into it, it will leak and eventually run dry. This is the picture God painted about His people.
Forsaking the Fountain
God calls Himself the fountain of living waters. A fountain is ever-flowing, fresh, and life-giving. It does not run dry. To forsake God is to walk away from the only true and reliable source of life, peace, joy, and fulfillment. Many people today are spiritually thirsty, not because water is unavailable, but because they have abandoned the fountain.
Digging Broken Cisterns
Instead of returning to God, people create alternatives—“cisterns.” These represent human efforts, worldly systems, and misplaced priorities. Some trust in wealth, others in relationships, status, or personal strength. But the problem is not just that these cisterns are man-made—it is that they are broken.
A broken cistern cannot sustain life. It promises satisfaction but delivers emptiness. It gives temporary relief but no lasting fulfillment. Many are busy pouring their time, energy, and resources into things that cannot hold what they truly need.
The Danger of Substitutes
The greatest tragedy is not always open rebellion against God, but quiet substitution. When anything takes the place of God in our lives, it becomes a broken cistern. It may look appealing, it may seem to work for a while, but in the end, it will fail.
The Call to Return
God’s message is not just a rebuke—it is an invitation. Return to the fountain. Stop investing in what cannot satisfy. Come back to the source that never runs dry. In God, there is fullness of joy, peace that endures, and life that overflows.
Conclusion
Life becomes frustrating when we depend on broken systems to meet eternal needs. The truth remains: only God can satisfy the soul. Anything outside Him will leak, fail, and leave us empty.

After university, Bro Gbile Akanni and a fellow Christian brother were posted for NYSC. Soon after arrival, they were invited to a worldly party. Bro Gbile refused, insisting believers must stand for Christ. His friend, afraid of being mocked as “old-school,” decided to attend.

At the party, he rejected alcohol and asked for malt. But when a lady mocked him for drinking malt instead of beer, shame pushed him to take his first glass of alcohol. That single compromise gradually drew him away from Christ.

Years later, Bro Gbile met him again. His life was broken, marriage ruined, and destiny shattered. Weeping, he said, “What you are today is what I could have been.” Though he later returned to Christ, the wasted years were never recovered before his death.

Your destiny is precious but contested. The little ground you surrender today may become the enemy’s stronghold tomorrow. Choose Christ while you are young.
