Text: Romans 1:1-7
Topic: GRACE AND PEACE TO ALL
“To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 1:7, NIV
According to Wikipedia, grace is "the love and mercy given by God is because God desires us to have it, not necessarily because of anything we have done to earn it". Grace is favour - the free and undeserved help that God gives us. God is the initiator in the relationship of grace between God and man. When grace is received by faith, the result is peace with God.
Grace and peace are necessary twin companions for our Christian journey. Having this understanding prompted Apostle Paul, after acknowledging the impact of grace in his own life to request for increasing measure of both grace and peace for the Roman Christians. Through grace we have the opportunity to respond to His call to become children of God, adoptive sons, partakers of the divine nature and of eternal life. It is an attribute of God that is most manifest in the salvation of sinners. If we are not going to run our Christian race in vain, we must appreciate that who we are in Christ is by grace and ensure that we are at peace with God and people always. Do you feel like you are who you are by your power or intelligence? Remember that God is the source of all things. Appreciate Him for the grace and peace you enjoy.
Insight: You cannot run or win the race without grace and peace.
Prayer: Lord, please, let Your grace and peace continue to increase in my life.

Bible Text: Nehemiah 13:10-14

NEHEMIAH RESTORES MINISTRIES OF LEVITE SINGERS

So I rebuked the officials and asked them, "Why is the house of God neglected?" Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts. Nehemiah 13:11, NIV

Have you imagined not having the choir in church to sing during worship experiences? Music is powerful. It is part of our worship experience, which soothes the soul and adds beauty to the worship experience.
By the time Nehemiah returned, music, another crucial aspect of worship in the Temple had stopped as well. The music ministers who were supposed to provide good music during ‘Temple services’ were no longer available because they were busy ploughing their fields (vs. 10). Continuing in his Temple reformation, Nehemiah located the singers and ensured they resumed their ministries at their post in the Temple (vs. 11). When Temple service came back alive, the people began to bring their tithes (vs. 12a), new wine and olive oil (vs. 12b) making it necessary to get men that could be trusted to handle these things (vs. 13).
Every ministry in the church is important. Those who have been called to serve in one aspect or the other should also take their responsibilities in the church seriously. Do not allow anything to discourage you from providing your service to God in the area of your giftedness. Locate where God will want you to serve and serve Him wholeheartedly.

Insight: Serving in the Temple (Church) is a noble task.

Prayer: Lord, help me not to leave my duty post in your Temple.

Bible Text: Nehemiah 13:4-9

NEHEMIAH ORDERS TEMPLE CLEANSING AND RESTORATION

I gave orders to purify the rooms, and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense. Nehemiah 13:9, NIV

Making a room tidy is always a difficult task when such a room has not been used for some time. It requires thinking about the volume of dirt, the stress of taking out unwanted items and bringing in new items. However, it is a worthwhile effort that can take all day.
Nehemiah returned from Babylon to meet the Temple in a wrong state. Eliashib gave one of the Temple rooms to Tobiah, an Ammonite and enemy of the Jews who opposed the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. A room that was meant to accommodate sacred things (offerings, tithes of grain, temple articles, etc.) became 'host' to Tobiah's household goods (vs. 8). Hence, there was a need to restore the sacredness of the Temple, making it free from pollution. Nehemiah ordered the clearing of the room, purified it and returned the holy things to the Temple.
Your body is the Temple of God, and as such, it should be cleared of any foreign things, which would not make the Temple fulfil its purpose of accommodating God. Identify every debris of sin, such as lies, cheating, po*******hy, etc. that occupy the space that God would have occupied and clear them out by repenting of them then fill your heart with godly virtues.

Insight: - Your body is the Temple of God. Clear it of debris.

Prayer: - Lord, help me to identify all wrong things that I have allowed in my life.

Bible Text: Daniel 9:4-6, 15-19

*DANIEL INTERCEDES FOR JERUSALEM*

Give ear, O God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. *Daniel 9:18-19, NIV*

T.W. Hunt said, "Intercession is the more important kind of asking." It makes it possible to stand in the gap for someone else in the place of prayer. This is done without focusing on yourself when praying, but focusing on others. It is aimed at asking the Lord to accomplish His will in someone else’s life. Daniel was a typical example of an intercessor.
Daniel had a good stand with God. However, he realized that God's punishment came upon the nation of Israel because the people sinned by rebelling against God's commands which came through His prophets. Having realized that God had promised to restore Jerusalem and her inhabitants, Daniel interceded for the city. He associated himself with the people as he prayed to God. In his prayers, he used 'we' throughout and not; 'they'. That is the heart of a true intercessor who understands the real act of intercession.
There are people all around us whose deeds could bring punishment, not only upon them, but to everyone around. Determine to stand on their behalf in prayer before God today. As you do that, identify with their sins and ask God to have mercy.

*Insight* : - Intercession is stepping into the shoes of others.

*Prayer* : - Enlarge my heart Lord, to accommodate other people's burdens in prayer.

CONFESSION AND CORRECTION

Devotional Reading: Ezekiel 18:25-32
Background Scripture: Ezra 9-10
Lesson Scripture: Ezra 10:1-12

GOLDEN TEXT
“O my God, I am too ashamed and disgraced to lift up my face to you, my God, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens. Ezra 9:6

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:
• Highlight some of the problems that were common in the days of Ezra;
• Discuss the steps Christians can take in order to return to God;
• State at least three lessons they have learnt from the life of Ezra and the Israelites.

INTRODUCTION
The famous proverb, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is still relevant in our relationship with God and humankind. The Israelites did not remember the importance of this proverb neither did they pay attention to God's warnings through His prophets. According to the law of Moses, they were forbidden from marrying people from the land of Canaan so that they will not be led astray _ idolatry (Exodus 34:11-16; Deuteronomy 7:1-6). Unfortunately, they disobeyed God. Some of the returnees from exile including their leaders had foreign wives. Some older Jewish men divorced their wives and married younger foreign women, thereby producing children of mixed religious loyalties. Worse still, they began to follow their pagan practices against the will of God. As they continued in this unwholesome behaviour God's holy name was profaned. When the news reached Ezra, he was grieved. He tore his clothes in despair, shaved his hair and beard and sat down in sorrow. He prayed and confessed that they had no right to come to God's presence (Ezra 9:3, 15).

Today's lesson focuses on the plan made by the Israelites to end intermarriage, under the leadership of Ezra. He encouraged them to confess their sins to the God of their ancestors, to separate themselves from foreign wives and endeavour to do what is right always. The lesson emphasises the importance of confession, correction and total repentance as conditions to enjoy God's blessings.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED
A. Genuine Confession Ezra 10:14
When Ezra learned of Israel's intermarriage with non-Jews, he became troubled. He knelt down in prayer and began to confess their sins as a nation to God. While he was praying, weeping and confessing their sins in the temple, a group of Israelites (men, women and children) gathered around him and they all wept bitterly. Then Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, of the tribe of Elam confessed and said to Ezra, "We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel." (v. 3) Thereafter, they made a solemn vow to:
• Send away the foreign wives and their children;
• Do exactly what Ezra and other leaders who honoured God's commands instructed them to do;
• Do what the law of God requires.

Although the idea of driving away their foreign wives and children seemed rash but it was a necessary step they must take in returning to God in obedience. However, the practice of marrying them and compromising the faithfulness of the next generation was already widespread that even the priests and Levites were involved (Ezra 10:18-24). One major truth from the passage is that Ezra demonstrated an act, which showed the gravity of the sin and genuineness of their plea for repentance. He openly showed a sense of remorse for the sins of disobedience to divine instructions committed by his people. He wept, confessed and bowed down in front of the house of the Lord. Interestingly, the people pledged to support Ezra in the discharge of his responsibility of leading them to repentance. The steps taken by Ezra and Shechaniah revealed genuine repentance. In verse 2b, Shechaniah stated categorically"... we have trespassed against our God... He chose to obey God rather than following the footprints of his father's household (Ezra 10:21), and requested for a specific action from Ezra in order to appease God. In a nutshell, Christians should understand the necessity of confession of sin, genuine repentance and total obedience to Gods commands as steps to return to God. In addition, Christian leaders should be ready to identify with their people, especially in difficult times. They should endeavour to lead them unto genuine repentance for their wrong doings so that their sins will be forgiven.

DISCUSSION TIME
1. Discuss some of the ways Christians disobey God today and the likely consequences.
2. State and discuss some of genuine confession and repentance.

B. Ezra's Sincere Proclamation Ezra 10:5-8
Ezra was a leader per excellence. His prompt response to the counsel of Shecaniah to send all the foreign wives away and do what God's law requires is quite commendable (v. 3). He began with the priests, the Levites, all Israel and ensured that they take an oath to comply with Shecaniah's proposal. He went straight into the council chambers of Jehohanan and spent the night there, still grieving over the unfaithfulness of the people, without food and water. A proclamation was made throughout Jerusalem and Judah that all the exiles should gather at Jerusalem within three days. Penalty for disobedience was attached to the instruction. In accordance with the decision of the officials and elders, anyone who disobeys would lose his property and be excommunicated from the community of God's people (v. 8).

Ezra's era of reformation is remarkable in the history of Israel. He committed the leaders by making them to take an oath of compliance with the suggestion made by Shecaniah to send the foreign wives away with their children and to do what God required (v. 3). Thereafter, he made a public proclamation throughout the land of Jerusalem and Judah. He summoned them to a meeting to probably discus the modalities of applying Shecaniah's suggestion of sending away their foreign wives and their children as well as the restoration of worship of the true God. However, it should be noted that Ezra was successful in this adventure because the people acknowledged the fact that he is a trustworthy leader who meant good for them. Also, the penalty of forfeiture of property or the right of inheritance from the community of God's people, if they fail to attend the meeting is commendable. The challenge, therefore, is that Christian leaders should know that it is their responsibility to lead their subjects to realise their mistakes, encourage them to confess and be ready to return to God. Likewise, it is important for leaders to live worthy lives that would make followers to obey godly instructions from them, as it is seen in today's lesson.

DISCUSSION TIME
1. Discuss the importance of confession and true repentance as steps to returning to God.
2. Discuss the implications of taking an oath in order to convince people of your innocence.
3. Was Ezra right to have made the people to take an oath of commitment to comply with the decision of Shecaniah to send away their foreign wives and children? Discuss.

C. Ezra's Charge on Repentance Ezra 10:9-12
The people's response to Ezra's summon to a meeting is commendable. All the men Judah and Benjamin responded swiftly to the call that Ezra made in verse 7. They gathered at the temple square in Jerusalem within three days, despite the rain because of the importance of the meeting. Of course, the people understood the gravity and severity of their sin and the punishment that was attached to it. So, they were greatly distressed by the occasion. In verse 10, Ezra the priest arose and addressed the people. He commanded specifically on their faithlessness and how they brought guilt on Israel by marrying pagan women. Then, he admonished them to confess their sins to God and resolve to do what pleases Him alone. He also urged them to separate themselves from the people who live in the land and get rid of their foreign wives. Amazingly, the people responded with a loud voice saying. "We will do whatever you say.”

The response of the people to Ezra's admonition to repent of their sins and turn to God is similar to that of the people of Israel, in the days of Joshua at Shechem. He challenged them to honour and serve the Lord, the God of their forefathers. Interestingly, the people responded in the affirmative. They said, "We will never leave the Lord to serve other gods!" (Joshua 24:14-16) Obviously, the people's response is an indication of true and genuine repentance. After all, they were not coerced but they voluntarily confessed their sins with the decision to do God's will, having listened to Ezra's admonition. The implication of this is that, no matter the level of moral decadence in our land, if we repent with strong resolution to do only those things that please God, He will hear and forgive our sins. He will heal our land and make it prosperous again (2Chronicles 7:14).

DISCUSSION TIME
1. Considering Ezra's approach in solving the problem of his days, how do you think the problem of moral decadence can be solved in our days?
2. Discuss some lessons believers can learn from verses 9-12.

Fellowship and Ministry Building Activity
From the passage, mention some steps Ezra took in solving the problem of the people of Israel and discuss how such plan could be implemented today.

Take Home
• Christian leaders should learn to lead by example, like Ezra did.
• It is good to confess our sins but it is better to repent genuinely.
• Believers should learn to turn to God in prayer and fasting for solving problems of their nation.
• Christians should endeavour to do only what the law of God demands.
• When we confess our sins and repent genuinely, God will forgive us.
• Disobedience to God attracts punishment.

THE SUFFERING SERVANT BRINGS SALVATION

Devotional Reading: Philippians 2:1-11
Background Scripture: Isaiah 52:13-53:12; Luke 24:1-35
Lesson Scripture: 1saiah 53:4-11

GOLDEN TEXT
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:
• Describe the characteristics of the suffering Servant;
• Examine the benefits of complete obedience to God;
• Appropriate the rewards of the suffering Servant to our lives..

INTRODUCTION
Our grandfather was a good story-teller. We loved to visit him in the village during our holidays so that we can hear and learn many stories. One of the most exciting stories he told was the story of a village head who sacrificed his son in order to maintain peace between two communities. According to our grandpa, there was a dispute between two neighbouring communities over the ownership of a piece of land for a long period of time. Many people lost their lives and valuables during the period. However, when the new village head of one of the communities emerged, he sought for peace and reconciliation by calling on the two communities for dialogue. Eventually, he offered one of his sons to be killed as a substitution for the lives already lost from both communities to appease them. Ever since then, peace has returned to the two communities.

Isaiah is one of the prophets through whom God spoke to the people of Israel to restore them back to Himself. Today's lesson focuses on Isaiah's prophecy about the suffering Servant (Jesus Christ) who endured the suffering that would have been ours. He suffered and died for the salvation of humankind. Simply put, His death was a sacrifice that brought forgiveness of sin to believers. Therefore, we can say that He (Jesus Christ) played substitutionary role in our lives, as believers.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED
A. The Suffering Servant: A Perfect Substitute Isaiah 53:4-6
The first few verses of Isaiah chapter 53 tells of the people's response to God's promise of a suffering Servant who will rescue Jerusalem. It shows how the Servant was shunned, despite the divine mission. But from verse 4, the suffering Servant is described as a man who endured suffering that would have been ours and pains for our sake. Even though He was wounded because of our sins, Prophet Isaiah further prophesied that He would bear the consequence of the sins of many. He would carry their grief and sorrow but they would think it is punishment from God (. 4). In verse 5, He played the role of a perfect substitute. He was wounded and bruised for our iniquities (1 Peter 2:24), and by the punishment He suffered, we are healed and made whole. Nonetheless, in verse 6, humankind is depicted as reckless sheep that lack direction, but the Lord brought upon Him the punishment we deserve.

Isaiah's prediction in this passage is the climax of four servant's songs as recorded by him. The description of the suffering Servant rightly fits the person of Jesus Christ, as it relates to His suffering and death on the cross. Therefore, He is the revelation of the One who would suffer for the nation of Israel and by extension, humankind. The suffering Servant was sinless (Hebrews 4:15) but He bore the whole burden of sin, which estranged humanity from God and it cost Him His life. By implication, He suffered in order to secure our peace with Him. The testimony, however, is that His sufferings guaranteed our salvation. More importantly, the affirmation of the suffering Servant being a substitute for the sins of others is repeated several times in the New Testament as a description of Jesus' ministry (Matthew 8:17; 1 Peter 2:22).

DISCUSSION TIME
1. Discuss the substitutionary roles of Christ and its implication in the life of a believer
2 What is the significance of Christ's suffering in evangelism?

B. Obedience of the Suffering Servant Isaiah 53:7-9
Having explained how the suffering Servant shouldered the consequence of the sins of humankind and the righteous wrath of God upon Him, Prophet Isaiah also listed some characteristics of the suffering servant in relation to His obedience to God.
• Though He was treated harshly but He humbly endured it without saying a word,
• He gave Himself like a lamb about to be slaughtered (i.e, He played the role of a sacrificial lamb) and a sheep about to be sheared but never opened His mouth.
• He was arrest and sentenced to death like a criminal. Unfortunately, no one showed concern about His fate.
• He was finally put to death for the sins of other people.
• He was buried in the grave, despite the fact that He had no sin. In his letter to the Christians of his time, Apostle Peter encouraged them to emulate Jesus' suffering. He alluded to the fact that Jesus never committed a crime or told a lie. Despite the insults and sufferings, He only placed His hope in God, the Righteous Judge (1 Peter 2:22-23).

The suffering Servant totally submitted to His oppressors (v. 7). He was obedient even to the point of death (Philippians 2:8), and eventually became victorious. Jesus Christ died so that through His redemption work, we will receive salvation and the righteousness, which is of God. It is rather unfortunate that many people still do not understand Jesus' role in the plan of salvation; therefore, they will not enjoy the benefits of His substitutionary work and obedience to God. No doubt, the passage clearly emphasises the importance of complete obedience to God's will and purpose as demonstrated by Jesus, our perfect example. Therefore, without obedience, we may not fully understand and enjoy the benefits of His substitutionary role that has earned us salvation.

DISCUSSION TIME
1. Discuss three reasons why Jesus Christ had to suffer for the sins of humankind.
2. To what extent should believers tolerate insults or punishment, which they are not guilty of?

C. Rewards of the Suffering Servant Isaiah 53:10-11
The climax of the mission of the suffering Servant is the success, reward and exaltation, which He received. Of course, it was to the astonishment of the nations. After all, none would have thought He had a mission to fulfil because He bore the pain and death, which would have been ours (vv. 4-5). According to verse 10, God spoke again that it was His will that the suffering Servant should suffer on behalf of others. Therefore, His death became a sacrifice that offers forgiveness and through Him God's purpose would be achieved. Ultimately, the suffering servant will have joy and know that His suffering and pain is not in vain. More so, He would endure the punishment of others and for His sake, they will receive forgiveness (v. 11).

There is always a reward for any act of obedience. Jesus obedience to the will of God offers us the gift of salvation. It was also written concerning Him that His days shall be prolonged. By implication, He would rise from the dead and live to reign forever. The one time sacrifice He made would be enough for the forgiveness that would lead to the justification of many. Noteworthy in the passage is the statement that "out of his anguish he shall see light" (v. 11), which confirms the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The fulfilment of the prophecy concerning the suffering Servant and the rewards attached to His obedience is an indication that God is ever faithful to His promises. Therefore, believers should not doubt God's promises because whatever He says He will do, He will surely do.

DISCUSSION TIME
1. Mention two ways you can convince a sinner that Jesus suffered for his/her sin.
2. The suffering Servant justified many. Discuss 'justification' in relation to our salvation.
3. Let a class member share a practical example of how he/she suffered for the sin he/she never committed and how he/she felt.

Fellowship and Ministry Building Activities
• List the characteristics of the suffering Servant in the passage
• Suggest to the evangelism committee to plan a crusade during this Easter period. Let the people you ministered to know about the substitutionary role of the suffering Servant and the benefits attached to it.

Take Home
• Jesus Christ is the perfect substitution for our sins.
• Christians should be hopeful of resurrection, just as Christ resurrected.
• Jesus suffered and died for the sins of the whole world.
• Death has been conquered as a result of the resurrection of Jesus.
• Every act of obedience brings reward.
• Jesus was humble, even unto death.

SEEKING DIVINE HELP

Bible Text: Psalm 86:1-13

RBT Passage: 2 Chronicles 12-16

'Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. - Psalm 86:11

A woman was fed up with seeking help from lesser gods that had failed to solve her problems over the years. Unfortunately, she approached a so called prophet who added salt to her injury. The man asked her to bring a goat and liters of palm oil to appease the witches. The woman became disappointed but did not give up in her pursuit for divine help. She eventually encountered Christ and started to follow and serve Him. She then found help in God.

Many people who claim to be born again are still indulging in fe**sh and diabolical practices. It takes those who have totally submitted to the Lordship and sovereignty of God that can speak like the Psalmist (Psalm 86:10-13). By his personal revelation of God he understands that: God answers prayers (vs. 1, 6, 7) He is forgiving and good (v.5), He guards lives (v.2, 11) He gives joy (v.4) He is worthy to receive praise, glory and worship (9, 12) loving and saving from death (v.13). Beloved, there is no help in any other source than the creator of the universe (Acts 4:7-12). It is a deception of Satan to think that something or someone else saves, cares, heals, and delivers apart from God. Surrender to Him today and you will be helped all the way.

Insight: 'Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved' (Acts 4:12)

Prayer: May your head never lack overflowing fresh oil from God's throne for your miracles in Jesus' name.
