Many people do not believe biblical principles apply to life in the modern world. But in doing so they miss out on the wisdom and experience of our Creator
As a young teen I vividly remember the time when we needed to shovel the shelled corn out of the granary to make room for the new corn.
That required getting inside and using big scoop shovels move the corn into a wagon just outside.
Being young and fairly strong, I somehow decided I should turn this chore into some kind of competition to show how much I could do.
I suppose most young men go through stages like this. Surely I could outwork this “old man” with just a gray fringe of hair still around his head!
I started with a burst of energy, shoveling that pile of corn like a snowblower in a Minnesota blizzard!
About 20 minutes in I had moved a sizable amount, but then so had grandpa, who was steadily working along.
At about 30 minutes, with sweat dripping into my eyes, my arms and back were starting to burn.
And grandpa was still steadily going.
Finally, after 45 minutes, I had to stop and sit down.
Not only had grandpa moved more corn than I, but he was still working along without stopping—I was officially defeated!
It wasn’t that grandpa was a machine, or so much stronger than I.
What I failed to take into consideration was his tremendous advantage of wisdom and experience that I lacked.
Long before in life, he had learned how to leverage his body in work so he didn’t burn out his muscles.
He had learned economy of motion that gets the most out of every action.
And he knew the value of steady work rather than going at it like he was putting out a fire!
In the end, it wasn’t brute strength that defeated me in that “competition.”
It was my lack of wisdom and experience.
When we finished loading that wagon, I walked out of the granary hot and tired and a bit less cocky than I had been going in.
How many times have we humans approached life and the challenges of life with an arrogant, self-assured approach, believing we knew where the line was between right and wrong, or even deciding the line shouldn’t exist at all?
And all the time ignoring patience, wisdom and experience of the Author of life.
In the end, God and His way of life will prove to be the only right way for us to live.
