“Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.” (Jn 11:5)

Today the Church remembers a household — not a church, not a convent, but a family home in Bethany. It was there that Jesus came to rest, to eat, to weep, and to call the dead back to life.

In Martha: the servant who did not stop.
In Mary: the contemplative who would not be moved.
In Lazarus: the beloved who was raised by the prayers of his sisters and the word of Christ.

Three witnesses. One household. One Lord who loved them all.

Every praesidium of the Legion of Mary is a Bethany — a place where the Lord is welcomed, where both the active and the contemplative are honoured, and where souls are called forth from whatever has bound them.

Which are you today — Martha, Mary, or the one waiting to be called forth?

Saint of the day.

Today, July 15, marks the feast day of St. Bonaventure, who is called “The Seraphic Doctor” of the Church. St. Bonaventure is known for his leadership of the Franciscans and his great intellectual contributions to theology and philosophy.

Sources recount that in his youth, St. Bonaventure was cured of a dangerous illness by the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi. He went on to join the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor in 1243.

After making his vows, he was sent to complete his studies in Paris. He was taught first by Alexander of Hales, an English doctor and Franciscan, and later by John of Rochelle.

In 1257, St. Bonaventure was chosen to serve as the superior of the Friars Minor. In this position, which he filled for 17 years, he brought peace and order. His impact was so great that today he is sometimes referred to as the second founder of the Franciscans.

In 1273, he was appointed by Pope Gregory X as Cardinal and Bishop of Albano. The Pope also asked him to help prepare the Second Ecumenical Council of Lyons, an ecclesial event aimed at re-establishing communion between the Latin and Greek Churches.

St. Bonaventure worked to prepare the Ecumenical Council, but never saw its completion. He died on July 15, 1274, while the council was still in session. He was canonized in 1482 by Pope Sixtus IV.

🌹✝️ A WORD TO OUR DEAR LEGIONARIES ✝️🌹

Dear Legionaries, we owe you an apology.

Many of you set aside your evening and waited faithfully for our launch broadcast. *It did not come, and we are truly sorry.* 💔

What happened: as we prepared to begin, we discovered that Facebook does not permit a newly created page to go live until it has been established for a period of time. We tried every alternative we could find — but none would open the door for us that night. 🚪
We know some of you gathered, and some of you waited. Thank you for your patience and your love. It humbles us. 🙏
The Handbook, as ever, had already spoken to our situation:

_"Obstacles in the way of starting, there will always be. In this the Legion will not be alone amongst good works. A little resolution will show these difficulties, which seem so formidable in advance, to resemble a forest, which at a distance appears solid and impenetrable, but when once approached is found easy of entry."_ 🌳

And so we approach the forest. 🚶🏽‍♀️🚶🏽

THE PANEL WILL STILL HOLD. 📅
We shall gather on Google Meet, record the session, and post it to our platforms for every Legionary to watch — at your own time, in your own home. The Spiritual Director, the Senatus President, and the Vexillatio Media team will all speak, exactly as planned.
