Twin brothers, Fathers Joe and Matt Kelly, have become a source of inspiration across Ireland as they celebrate a rare and historic milestone — 70 years of priesthood.

The 95-year-old brothers marked their Platinum Jubilee in 2026, seven decades after their ordination in 1956, a journey that has touched generations of Catholics in Ireland.

Born on March 21, 1931, in Coolcarrigan, County Kildare, Ireland, the Kelly twins were raised in a deeply faith-filled home. Their mother, Ann Kelly, served as a school principal in Timahoe, while their father, Peter Kelly, operated a local grocery business. Alongside their siblings, the twins grew up in an atmosphere strongly connected to education, faith, and community service.

The brothers attended primary school in Timahoe before proceeding to St Mary’s Knockbeg College for their secondary education. Their calling to the priesthood emerged early in life. Although church authorities initially separated them during seminary formation — sending Joe to Clonliffe College in Dublin and Matt to Maynooth Seminary — the brothers remained united in vocation and purpose.

In 1956, both men were ordained priests, though not on the same day. Father Joe Kelly was ordained for the Archdiocese of Dublin in May 1956, while Father Matt Kelly was ordained for the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin in June 1956. According to reports from Irish media, the family had hoped the twins would be ordained together, but church authorities insisted otherwise. Fr. Matt once revealed that his written request asking for a joint ordination was returned with the handwritten response: “No permission given.”

Over the past seven decades, both priests served faithfully in different ministries throughout Ireland.
Father Joe Kelly spent most of his ministry serving parish communities throughout Dublin, including Finglas, Whitehall, Santry, and Bayside. He became widely respected for his pastoral closeness to parishioners and his gentle personality. He retired after decades of service as curate in Bayside Parish, Raheny, Dublin.

Father Matt Kelly pursued both parish and academic ministry. He taught philosophy for nearly two decades at Carlow College, St Patrick’s Seminary and later served as college president. He also ministered as Parish Priest in Kildare Town and contributed greatly to church music, choir leadership, and Catholic education throughout the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin.

Despite their demanding priestly duties, the twins shared many personal interests throughout life. Both were enthusiastic golfers and longtime members of the Royal Dublin Golf Club, reportedly continuing to play weekly golf rounds until very recently. Father Joe was also known as a talented footballer and once represented Kildare at minor level during the 1953–1954 seasons.

Today, both priests reside together at the Little Sisters of the Poor Sacred Heart Residence in Raheny, Dublin, where they continue to inspire many through their humility, faithfulness, and joyful witness to the priesthood.

To honour their Platinum Jubilee, a special Mass of thanksgiving was celebrated at the Church of the Resurrection in Bayside, Dublin, led by Archbishop Dermot Farrell and Bishop Denis Nulty. The celebration drew admiration from Catholics across Ireland, many describing the brothers’ story as a remarkable testimony of dedication, perseverance, and lifelong service to God and humanity.

Reflecting on the changes within the Church over the decades, Father Joe stated that “the church had to change and it is all the better for changing,” highlighting their openness and wisdom shaped by decades of ministry through different eras of Catholic history, including the reforms following the Second Vatican Council.

Their story has since attracted international attention, with Catholic media outlets celebrating the Kelly twins as a symbol of enduring vocation, brotherhood, and unwavering faith.

‎Ignorance is a great weapon used by the devil. It is opposed to truth and knowledge. People are destroyed for lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). Ignorance can make someone to place priority in the wrong place or mistake a blessing for a curse or a creature for the Creator. Ignorance prevented the Athens from knowing the true God. Their ignorance was excusable because they had not received the Holy Spirit. Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to lead anyone who accepts him into the complete truth. The Holy Spirit makes culpable ignorance inexcusable and every Christian a constant learner. Have you received the Holy Spirit?

‎TODAY’S REFLECTION
‎
‎In today’s first reading Paul reminds the faithful to continue in faith despite persecutions because it is through many tribulations that we can enter the kingdom of God. Paul, Barnabas and the Christian community keep their faith strong by prayer and fasting. Jesus speaks of the ruler of this world who is opposed to the kingdom of the father. He may torture and persecute and even kill him. But Jesus asserts that he has no power over him. Jesus willingly submits himself to the authority out of obedience to his father. Persecutions, kidnapping, torture and even killing cannot destroy our true faith because it is a gift from God. We are strengthened in our faith when we carry out the father’s will. Lord, make us strong in the face of difficulties and persecutions.

‎Jesus is the Journey, the aim and the strength for the Journey. He is the passage, the passage through his Death and Resurrection. Through this passage he goes to prepare a place for us, to open the way for our communion with the Father. Christ is the absolutely new and unique way for humanity to pass over from earthly life to heavenly life. He is the only and definitive way that leads to God; therefore, he Christ, is unique. To reach the home of the Father it is not important to know where it is; but is necessary to know the way, and that way is Christ. He is the way because he is the revelation of the truth of the Father. The way to truth and life can be found only in him

‎🇻🇦⛪ Our Lady of Africa: A Mother for the Church and the Continent
‎
‎The devotion to Our Lady of Africa, deeply promoted by Cardinal Charles Lavigerie in his outreach and dialogue with Muslims, is rooted in the Church’s earliest understanding of Mary’s unique role in God’s plan of salvation.
‎
‎From the moment of the Resurrection, the first Christian community recognized Jesus as true God. In contemplating the mystery of the Child Jesus, they understood more profoundly Mary’s place in His mission: she is truly the Mother of God. At the foot of the Cross, Christ entrusted Mary not only to the beloved disciple but to all humanity, establishing her as Mother of the Church.
‎
‎Mary did not withdraw after giving birth to Christ. Rather, she remained with the apostles as a maternal presence—encouraging, guiding, and strengthening them in their mission. Her motherhood continues in the life of the Church, as she nurtures and intercedes for all those whom her Son has entrusted to her.
‎
‎Under the title Our Lady of Africa, she is given in a special way to the African continent—accompanying missionaries, blessing the peoples of Africa, and fostering dialogue with Muslims who already honour her as Mother of the Prophet. She stands as a sign of unity, hope, and intercession.
‎
‎In these challenging times, the Church invites all her children—especially those who are fearful or burdened—to seek refuge in the loving arms of their Mother. May Our Lady of Africa watch over the continent and intercede for her children throughout the world.
‎
‎On this day, together with the missionary Sisters of our Lady of Africa, we celebrate the memorial of Mary of Africa. This celebration encourages us to turn to Mary in order to experience her maternal intercession and assistance in our daily life.

‎As we honour the memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Africa, let us ask the Lord to fill the African continent with his peace and to preserve the local churches of Africa as faithful messengers of Christ.
‎
‎FOR THE LEADERS OF THE CHURCH IN AFRICA: that they may remain docile to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in fulfilling the mandate of proclaiming the Gospel to all nations. We pray O Lord.
‎
‎FOR AFRICAN LEADERS: that they may shun nepotism, religious bigotry and ethnic sectionalism in national life, and promote justice, peace and unity among the people. We pray O Lord.
‎
‎FOR ALL MOTHERS: that they may always find joy in their children, and be enabled to nurture them towards attaining full human and spiritual maturity. We pray O Lord.
‎
‎FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF AFRICA: that they may be given the wisdom to be able to make the right decisions as they journey through life, and may have access to affordable quality education and good work in their countries. We pray O Lord.
‎
‎FOR OTHER INTENTIONS: (the sick, church projects or other activities).
‎
‎FOR THE DEAD, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF OUR PARISH COMMUNITY AND FAMILY MEMBERS: that they may find eternal rest with the Lord. We pray O Lord.

‎God our Father, you chose the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the Mother of your Son and the Mother of Africa. Helped by her maternal guidance, may we share in the heavenly reward promised by her Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

‎TODAY’S REFLECTION
‎
‎We glorify God for the gift of our Heavenly Mother whom we honour today as our Lady Mother of Africa. Her role on our continent cannot be overemphasized. She reigns as a caring and an observant Queen of every Continent, at the side of her Son the King of the World. She is for the reason a credible intercessor for all our needs here on our Continent. We acknowledge her position as Our Lady and Mother and beseech her intercession for all her distressed and anguished children dispersed all over the African landscape and beyond and for countries hijacked by bad leaders and torn apart by hate, anger and dishonesty. Mary Our Lady, Mother of Africa pray for us.

‎A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 12:24-13:5a)

‎In those days: The word of God grew and multiplied. And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their mission, bringing with them John whose other name was Mark. Now in the Church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews.

‎TODAY’S REFLECTION
‎
‎In the first reading, we see how a believing community prays and engages in a Spirit-filled and Spirit-led life and mission. The community in Antioch hears God’s voice while listening together in prayer. Among their leaders are Africans: Lucius of Cyrene and Simon called Niger (Black). Guided by the Spirit, they send their best teachers on mission. In the Gospel, Jesus too declares that his entire mission by word and deed comes not from Himself but from His listening to, and responding faithfully to God. This is a lesson for us today, who tend to celebrate ourselves and each other for our diverse “achievements”.
