We often hear stories of sacrifice in our daily lives. Parents working tirelessly for their children's well-being, friends going above and beyond for one another, and even strangers showing kindness to those in need. These acts remind us of the incredible power of love. But what is the greatest form of love we can experience?

In today's passage, Jesus speaks of the ultimate expression of love: laying down one's life for one's friends. He reminds us that His love for us mirrors His Father's love for Him. This sacrificial love is not merely an ideal; Jesus demonstrated it by giving His life on the cross for our salvation, not because we deserved it, but because His love is perfect and selfless. He calls us His friends, inviting us into an intimate relationship built on love, obedience, and mutual care.

As we reflect on this, we are also challenged to love others. True love is sacrificial, selfless, and enduring. In a world marked by division, hurt, and selfishness, choosing to love as Christ loves is a challenge. We can embody the love Jesus has shown us by offering forgiveness, kindness, a helping hand, or patience even when it is difficult.

A pastor, while counselling an intending couple, asked the would-be husband if he loved his wife-to-be.

He responded that he loved her so much. Then, the pastor asked him again if he could die for his wife.

At this point, he breathed heavily and said, "Pastor, I cannot die in place of my wife.

My love for her does not mean I should die in her place."

Today's text emphasises the immeasurable love of God—the perfect love.

It illustrates the extent to which God loved us that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus.

Jesus encouraged His disciples to love each other as He loved them (v.12).

This points out the need to emulate God's kind of love, and live just as He lived.

As disciples, we begin to love as Jesus loves when God's love touches us and shows us how great His love is for us, so that we obey His commands.

We fail to see how great God's love is because we fail to appreciate how far God's love has reached for us.

Jesus offered us the God kind of love — "agape", an unconditional love, the highest form of love.

Anyone who does not know Jesus but claims to love God is either denying their sinfulness; or is worshipping a false god who does not require the perfection that the true God demands.

No matter how broken, fallen, or messed up you are, Jesus died for you; He still loves you.

As you go out today, be sure to love others unconditionally, just as Jesus loves you.

People joke about complaining and whining, about marriage, poor estate, and bad friends. However, these issues are no joking matter.

Many of life's blessings can be enjoyed, but they carry with them the potential to work against people.

The Bible cautions from today's text that more is not always better and wordiness is risky; that positive, wholesome conversation can make life pleasant. It can make or break.

Developing the art of conversation adds richness to our lives and those around us.

Solomon counsels that people should marry wisely. A good marriage is seen as an earthly reward of God's grace.

He further talks about the rich and the poor. No matter how wealthy people are, they should not be rude.

It is not right to look down on others. Moreover, in seeking friendship, it should be quality over quantity.

King Solomon emphasizes the importance of friendship and the need for a friend who is closer than a brother. Jesus, who loved and laid His life for us, is the ultimate friend.

He knows our every thought, word, deed, past, present, and future, and extends His love and grace to free us from our self-afflicted failures.

True friendships are rare and profound, requiring transparency, vulnerability, and emotional availability.

One of the core strengths of true friendship is reliability. Are you a reliable friend?

The challenge is to be the friend that attracts Jesus and brings glory to His name.

Billy Graham once said, "It is not wrong to have friends who are not Christians, but we must be careful not to let them influence us to compromise our faith."

Likewise, from today's passage, Paul informed the Corinthian Christians about some challenges he faced because of his commitment to Christ. He warned that any form of evil could destroy what had been built and undermine good morals. Society has become so corrupt that godly values are eroded daily; sins are no longer called sins but are given names that seem less offensive, to the detriment of those involved. It does not matter who is involved, godly values and God's standards remain unchanging and steadfast.

Who are your friends? How did you choose them? Do they uphold godly values? Do they fear God? These are important questions every believer should reflect on. Your friends should be those who add value to your life, spiritually, emotionally, and morally. Your desire to reach others should never come at the cost of diluting your convictions or of stepping outside God's will. True friendship should build up, not pull down. Surround yourself with people who respect you.

Main Discourse
Lorenzo Dow, whom people called Crazy Lorenzo Dow, was only four or five when he asked a playmate if he said his prayers every day.

The playmate said, "No." Lorenzo stood up and said, "Then you are very, very wicked, and I shall not play with you." Lorenzo grew up to be a mighty, fiery preacher.

He had the right idea as a child that no matter how much one wants friends, one must choose their friends carefully because they will affect someone — either positively or negatively.

In the passage today, Paul argues for the validity of the resurrection. Some in the church of Corinth denied that Jesus had been raised.

Paul warns the Corinthians that they are being deceived or tempted to wander from the truth by some people who reject the resurrection of the dead.

They seem to be the kind of friends and teachers that one needs, but they have no character, which is what the word "bad" means.

Their bad company or companionship, literally their discourses, will corrupt or destroy the Corinthians' good manners or moral habits.

Paul says, "There are some who are ignorant of God" and this was a shame to them. (v.34) Paul urges them to wake up and get out of these bad friendships.

Who you spend your time with matters. Your friends influence your thoughts, your decisions, and sometimes your actions.

If you have friends who push you to do wrong things, consider distancing yourself from them.

Invest in friendships that will help you to become more like Jesus, and avoid friends that will draw you away from Jesus.

Receiving encouragement through the body of Jesus Christ does not allow believers to take God's grace for granted. We must keep going in the right direction and try as much as possible to embrace God's grace to provoke one another to love and offer good deeds (v. 24). A Christian life should be active and not passive. We should not put-up bad attitudes towards one another. The fact that you have obtained mercy from God should make you have the right attitude towards others and, at the same time, not separate yourself from them., “not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (v. 25). Our purpose of gathering should be to offer proper worship to God and Him alone, not to please the flesh but to encourage one another in love and good deeds. You are to provoke others to discover God's purpose for them. You are to encourage them to put their trust in God and not in man. This should continue in your local assembly until you and other brethren reach the world for Christ.
It is essential to recognise that living in isolation can be perilous both spiritually and emotionally. God's design for humanity includes community, as He does not intend for us to face life's challenges alone. Regularly gathering with other believers is crucial for fostering encouragement and support, empowering us to grow in our faith and stay steadfast in our preparation for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Being actively part of House Fellowship goes a long way in answering that you do not live in isolation.

*REVIEW FOR THE MONTH*
Since the beginning of this month, we have been studying Our Obligation to God and the Society. We hope the lessons have opened our eyes to some of our obligations to God and our responsibilities to our society. Therefore, we will love to check how we have imbibed the lessons by answering the following questions:
1. How has grace taken us beyond borders?
2. How can Christians help a lazy brother to become active?
3. How can we cultivate empathy and develop a more positive understanding attitude towards the poor?
4. How important is adequate rest for Christians?
