★Reflection★
By the time Jesus finishes the parable of the Good Samaritan, His interlocutor is a changed person. Jesus tells the lawyer to do as the Samaritan did. Showing compassion is the key element in the parable. The priest and the Levite fail in their duty to help a wounded man but the Samaritan succeeds. In compassion he goes to him, binds his wounds and pours oil and wine into them, expensive items in those times. He further puts the man on his beast and he himself walks to the inn. He stays with him for the night, pays for his care and even promises to come back, have a look at him and pay whatever else is to be paid. A contrasting feature is that the priest and the Levite going back after their duties do not even care to look at the man. Another way to understand the compassion of the Samaritan is to look at the person of the father in the parable of the prodigal son. The father feels compassion for his wayward son who returns to him. He runs to him, embraces him and kisses him. He has a feast to welcome him and asks the servants to adorn him with the best robe, shoes for his feet and a ring for his hand. When was the last time we showed compassion to a person in need?

Thanksgiving for Graces Bestowed on St. Gertrude

To implore favors through her merits: God revealed to St. Gertrude that those who should thank him for the graces bestowed upon her would participate in her merits, and would obtain their petition provided it were for their eternal welfare.

O most sweet Lord Jesus Christ, I praise, extol and bless Thee, in union with that Heavenly praise which the Divine Persons of the Most Holy trinity mutually render to Each other, and which thence flows down upon Thy Sacred Humanity, upon the Blessed Virgin Mary and upon all the Angels and Saints. And I give Thee thanks for all the graces Thou didst lavish upon Thy beloved spouse, St. Gertrude.

I thank Thee especially for that ineffable love wherewith Thou didst pre-elect her from all eternity, didst enrich her so highly, didst draw her so sweetly to Thyself by the strongest bonds of love, didst unite her so blissfully to Thyself, dwell with such delight in her heart, and crown her life with so blessed an end. I recall to Thee now, O most compassionate Jesus, the promise Thou didst make to Thy beloved spouse, that Thou wouldst most assuredly grant the prayers of all who come to Thee through her merits and intercession, in all matters concerning their salvation. I beseech Thee, by Thy most tender love, grant me the grace . . . [mention it] which I confidently expect. Amen.

READINGS IN ORDINARY TIME WEEK 14 SATURDAY YEAR 2

09-JUL-2022
Reflection
The effects of an uncharitable and untrue comment lingers long after it is uttered. Trying to malign the name or fame of a person is an example. The Pharisees have said that Jesus casts out demons by the prince of demons. That Jesus does not react to the comment does not mean it has not affected Him for He recalls it when He says He has been previously connected to Beelzebul. Jesus brings up the issue to warn His disciples that they too must expect similar taunts by the authorities, but that they must not fear them. He consoles them by saying that the heavenly Father cares for them very much. The Father's care reaches out to apparently insignificant living beings like the sparrows kept in the meat market or to the hair on our heads, which will not fall off without the Father knowing it. One may lose one's life in this world, but will regain it in the next.

READINGS IN ORDINARY TIME WEEK 13 THURSDAY YEAR 2

30-JUN-2022

Reflection
God gives us the grace and strength needed to do His will. Amos and Amaziah have unpleasant confrontations at the sanctuary due to Amos' predictions. Upset by his preaching, Amaziah tries to intimidate Amos and falsifies his words as a conspiracy against the king. In responding to God's call Amos is empowered with courage to speak the truth and not to cower down. This is not a comfortable position to be in. Yet God gives Amos, a simple man, both knowledge and courage to speak the truth to the religious leaders, regardless of the personal cost. We commemorate today the first martyrs of the Church of Rome. These men and women from all walks of life lived against the backdrop of the mighty Roman Empire. God, through the Holy Spirit, empowered them, like the prophet Amos, to stand against the power of the world and the overwhelming cultural influences of that time. They remained obedient to the end and did not give in to any pressure.

ORDINARY TIME YEAR C SUNDAY WEEK 13
26 JUNE 2022

★REFLECTION★
The call of God requires a total response. "No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God." This implies commitment and complete attention to God's mission. Elisha's response is a paradigm for imitation. Once he receives the divine mandate through the prophet Elijah he "kills" everything that could constitute a distraction to serving God. His response is total. We all have put our hand to some "plough" or another: students to their studies; husbands and wives to their marriage, priests to their ministry, and all the baptised to follow Christ more closely. To look back therefore suggests we are in doubt and uncertain of what we are doing. Jesus sets His face towards Jerusalem and, though He knows what awaits Him, He does not deflect from this path. He resolutely journeys to Jerusalem to fulfil the will of His Father. To emulate Jesus and Elisha we must give up our ego and comfort zone and slaughter all the vices within us.

SOLEMNITIES ORDINARY TIME YEAR C THE SECRET HEART OF JESUS.
24 JUNE 2022

★Reflection★
The devotion to the Sacred Heart honours Jesus' unconditional, self-sacrificing love. This devotion grew popular during the reign of Louis XIV. It was a reaction against Jansenism, which taught that grace was given to only a few; that we were all corrupt and unworthy of a God too holy for us. The Jesuits responded by encouraging the devotion to the Sacred Heart, to show that Jesus loves every one of us. His heart burns with fervent love for humanity. His love reaches out to everyone: it heals, forgives, makes whole and never dies. Jesus compares Himself to a shepherd who serves and lives with the flock. This is what this feast is also about the proximity of God through a divine love made human. Look at an image of the Sacred Heart. Notice how Jesus is either pointing to His bleeding heart or extending it toward us, inviting us to love Him and to be loved by Him.
