The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord commemorates Jesus’ ascension into Heaven.

Historically, this holy day is been celebrated 40 days after Easter Sunday – the Thursday in the sixth week of Easter. When celebrated on a Thursday, the Ascension of the Lord remains a holy day of obligation.

As written in the New Testament in the Bible, after Jesus Christ’s crucifixion on Good Friday, he was resurrected from the dead in three days, he stayed with his Apostles to instruct them on how to carry out his teachings. As the Bible says, at the end of day 40, Jesus Christ and his disciples went to Mount Olivet (or the Mount of Olives), near Jerusalem. After asking them to stay, Christ then ascended to heaven to take his seat at the right hand of God, under the gaze of his disciples. To Christians, the ascension signifies that Christ completed his work on Earth and allowed him to prepare a place for his followers in heaven.

After saying this, he was taken up to heaven as they watched him, and a cloud hid him from their sight. Act 1:9

Sign Of The Cross✝️
Heavenly Father, I humbly come before You, recognizing Your Word as the guiding light in my life. Your commandments are my source of joy and strength, and I resolve to uphold them steadfastly till the end of my days.

The dawn of Your incarnate Word has dispelled the darkness of the world. May I, and all who call upon Your name, be bearers of this divine light. Grant me the grace to remain faithful to Your teachings, so that I may share Your life with a world thirsting for truth.

Ignite within me a fervent desire for heavenly things, and let the fire of Your love burn brightly in my heart, cleanse my heart with the radiance of the Holy Spirit, that I may love You, Lord Jesus, above all else through Christ our Lord Amen.

MORE ON MAY DEVOTION

In ancient Greece and Rome, the month of May was dedicated to pagan goddesses connected to fertility and springtime (Artemis and Flora, respectively). This, combined with other European rituals commemorating the new season of spring, led many Western cultures to view May as a month of life and motherhood. In the early Church, there is evidence of a major feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrated on the 15th of May each year, but it wasn’t until the 18th century that May received a particular association with the Virgin Mary. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “The May devotion in its present form originated at Rome where Father Latomia of the Roman College of the Society of Jesus, to counteract infidelity and immorality among the students, made a vow at the end of the eighteenth century to devote the month of May to Mary. From Rome the practice spread to the other Jesuit colleges and thence to nearly every Catholic church of the Latin rite.” Dedicating an entire month to Mary wasn’t a new tradition, as there existed a prior tradition of devoting 30 days to Mary called Tricesimum, which was also known as “Lady Month.” In 1945, Pope Pius XII solidified May as a Marian month after establishing the feast of the Queenship of Mary on May 31st. After the Second Vatican Council, this feast was moved to August 22, while May 31st became the feast of the Visitation of Mary. May devotions also were energised by the four authenticated apparitions of our Blessed Mother.

St. John Paul II in his Apostolic Letter on the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Rosary, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, insisted, pleaded, that the whole world pray the Holy Rosary for the salvation of the family and for world peace and invariably we are called to pray the Rosary more fervently now, so that the Blessed Virgin would continue to intercede for us all. Finally, let us note that devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary is not limited to the Months of May and October, we are encouraged to always pray the rosary daily.

Among Catholics, May is most well-known as “Mary’s Month,” a specific month of the year when special devotions are performed in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God's mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance".

What to do during May Devotion
There is no firm structure as to the content of a May Devotion, as it usually includes the daily recitation of the Rosary, singing of Marian anthems, readings from scriptures, and a sermon. Catholics offer Mary in May: pilgrimages, visits to Churches dedicated to her, little sacrifices in her honour, periods of study and well-finished work offered up to her, and a more attentive recitation of the rosary. That is to say we are all encouraged during this period to do the following: Daily recitation of the Rosary, Getting invested with the scapular or getting consecrated, Decoration of Our Lady’s image, Learning a new Marian Hymn, Reading about Our Lady, Making a Pilgrimage to any shrine of our Lady etc. The last day of the Devotion on May 31 is often followed by a solemn procession, during which a statue or portrait of the Virgin Mary is carried back into the Church. Again, one particular practice characteristic of May devotions is the May Altar, whether in a Church or as a “house altar” in the home. Marian devotions such as the rosary may take place within the family around this altar consisting of a table with a Marian picture, candles, and decorated with many May flowers.

Significance of May Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary

• To foster tender devotion to so good a mother
• To be reminded of Mary’s role as Advocate, Helper, Benefactress and Mediatrix CCC ( #969)
• To gain graces for the salvation of our souls and that of others.
• To imitate her virtues of humility, lively faith, ardent charity, blind Obedience, heroic patience, etc.
• To draw closer to Our Lord through the hands of the blessed virgin.

To foster deep devotion to Saint Joseph among Catholics, and in response to the “May Day” celebrations for workers sponsored by Communists, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker in 1955. Beginning in the Book of Genesis, the dignity of human work has long been celebrated as a participation in the creative work of God. By work, humankind both fulfills the command found in Genesis to care for the earth (Gen 2:15) and to be productive in their labors. As a carpenter, St. Joseph worked very hard. His manual labor was difficult, and he is a great example to all of us in our daily work. In addition, he is a powerful intercessor for those who are seeking employment.

St. Joseph was unfailingly obedient to God’s commands. He continually provided for his family and protected them—even in the face of great danger. Even though he was not the father of Jesus biologically, St. Joseph was a devoted father to the Word Incarnate, taking the place on earth of His Father in heaven.

St. Padre Pio said, “Go to Joseph with extreme confidence, because I do not
remember having asked anything from St. Joseph, without having obtained it readily.
Now that he is in Heaven, he is a powerful intercessor for us and the patron saint of many different people and places.

We know Joseph was a man of faith, obedient to whatever God asked of him without knowing the outcome. This silent saint, who was given the noble task of caring and watching over the Virgin Mary and Jesus, now cares for and watches over the Church and models for all the dignity of human work.

He is the patron saint of all workers.

AFRICAN SAINT OF THE DAY : ST JULIA OF TUNISIA

St. Julia was born in Carthage, the capital of the Roman province of Africa, around the year 440 AD. She came from a wealthy and influential family and received a good education. Julia was raised in a pagan household, but she was drawn to Christianity through the teachings of a local priest named Servulus. Despite her family's opposition, she converted to Christianity and became a devout follower of Jesus Christ. She was known for her beauty, intelligence, and devotion to the Christian faith. She used her influence and wealth to support the Christian community and provide assistance to those in need. Julia's unwavering devotion and willingness to sacrifice her life for her beliefs left a lasting impact on the early Church in Africa.

St. Julia was also known for her healing abilities. It is believed that she possessed the gift of miraculous healing and performed numerous miracles, curing the sick and restoring sight to the blind.
During the reign of the Vandal king Huneric, who was known for his persecution of Christians, Julia faced severe persecution for her faith. She was arrested and imprisoned for refusing to renounce her Christian beliefs. , St. Julia miraculously escaped from prison after being sentenced to death. She was said to have been freed by an angel who opened the prison doors, allowing her to flee. Despite the harsh conditions and torture, Julia remained steadfast in her faith. Julia's unwavering faith and refusal to compromise led to her martyrdom. She was eventually beheaded around the year 483 AD. Her martyrdom made her a symbol of courage and resilience for the early Christian community in North Africa.

She is revered as a saint and is celebrated on her feast day, May 22nd. Her story serves as a reminder of the strength of faith and the enduring power of compassion and selflessness.
