*PRESS RELEASE*
CWEENS FCT COMMENDS FRSC AND NIGERIA POLICE ON INTERCEPTION OF SUSPECTED CHILD TRAFFICKING ATTEMPT IN NYANYA.
Abuja, FCT – 19 January 2026.
Christian Women for Excellence and Empowerment in Nigerian Society (CWEENS), FCT Chapter, commends the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force for the timely interception and response to a suspected child trafficking incident in Nyanya, Abuja, which led to the rescue of seventeen (17) children.
CWEENS FCT acknowledges the vigilance and professionalism displayed by officers of the FRSC Nyanya Unit Command, whose alertness during routine patrol led to the discovery of young boys and girls crammed into a vehicle, including minors concealed in the boot. This decisive action prevented what could have resulted in grave harm to the children involved.
We further commend the swift inter-agency collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the Mararaba Division and the Nasarawa State Command, for taking the rescued children into protective custody and initiating a thorough investigation to dismantle any trafficking network involved.
This incident underscores the urgent need for strengthened child protection systems, continuous community vigilance, and coordinated multi-sectoral responses to combat child trafficking and exploitation. It also reinforces the critical role that frontline institutions, beyond their primary mandates, play in safeguarding vulnerable populations.
CWEENS FCT calls on government agencies, civil society organizations, faith-based institutions, and community leaders to intensify prevention efforts through awareness, reporting mechanisms, and survivor-centered protection services. Child trafficking is a gross violation of human rights and must be confronted with zero tolerance.
We stand in solidarity with the rescued children and reaffirm our commitment to advocating for their protection, rehabilitation, and reintegration, as well as to supporting policies and actions that uphold the dignity and safety of every child.
CWEENS FCT remains committed to working with relevant authorities and partners to end child trafficking, gender-based violence, and all forms of exploitation in the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.
