TOPIC: WARNING AGAINST IDOLATRY IN THE NEW TESTAMENT X
TEXT: I John 5:13-21
MEMORY VERSE: "Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen". I John 5:21

INTRODUCTION: Here in the epistle of Apostle John the Beloved to his children in the Lord and generally to the believed Gentiles, he also warned them against idol worshiping. This shall be our focus today.

LESSON
II.WARNING MESSAGE TO ALL GENTILES AND BELIEVERS AGAINST IDOLATRY
- Apostle John contrasts the word 'idols' with 'true God' in I John 5:20.

- In verse twenty-one (21), he warned his children and all the Gentiles to avoid idolatry, gods and have no idols in their hearts and lives. He admonished them to let God be their first and last love (Matthew 22:37).

- According to I John 5:20, who did Apostle John pictured to us as the true God and eternal life he contrasted with idols in verse twenty-one (21)?

- "All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death" (I John 5:17). According to the law, is the sin of idolatry unto death or not when committed as the sin of murder is unto death? Discuss and support with a bible verse.

- According to I John 5:13, why did Apostle John write these things, which he concluded by telling them to avoid idolatry (to keep themselves from idols) in I John 5:21? Who were his audience according to that verse thirteen (13)? What did he also ask them to continue doing according to that verse thirteen (13)?

CONCLUSION: Apostle John warned his children who were believers, whom he wrote the letter to, to avoid idolatry (to keep themselves from idols), because it is a sin unto death and that all unrighteousness is sin. He charged them to know that they have eternal life of God, who is, The True God and Eternal Life Himself and not in idols, and that they should continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

TEXT: I Thessalonians 1:5-9

MEMORY VERSE: "For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God". I Thessalonians 1:9

INTRODUCTION: The call of God to all idolaters is to come back to Him, repent and forsake their sin of idolatry and turn to serve the living and true God. This will make them to obtain the mercy of God.

LESSON
1. GENTILES WERE WARNED AGAINST IDOLATRY (CONT'D)
5. IN THESSALONIA
- In Thessalonia, the people were warned against idolatry. The word "turned", elsewhere in the New Testament refers to "repentance" They were preached to, to repent to God from idols so as to serve the living and true God.

- According to I Thessalonians 1:9, did the Thessalonians turn to God from idols to serve the living and true God? Discuss.

- For an idolater to turn to God from idols to serve the living and true God, what will be need according to I Thessalonians 1:5-7?

When the Thessalonians turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, what do they become according to I Thessalonians 1:6-7?

- Having received the Gospel of Jesus Christ to turn to God from idols to serve the living and true God, what did the Thessalonians do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ they had received according to I Thessalonians 1:8?

CONCLUSION: The Thessalonians turned to God from following idols to serve the living and true God when they accepted the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When they turned to God from idols, they became followers of the Lord and of the Apostles; this made them to be examples to all who believed in Macedona and Achaia. The reason for them being example is because from them sounded out the word of the Lord, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place they hear of their faith towards God has gone out to.

TEXT: Ephesians 5:1-5
MEMORY VERSE: “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire and covetousness which is idolatry” Colossians 3:5 NKJV.

INTRODUCTION: In Colossians 3:5, Brother Paul lists a bunch of things to put to death in one's self, ending with “covetousness, which is idolatry.” He also linked the two in a similar way, in a parallel passage in Ephesians 5:5.

LESSSON
I.GENTILES WERE WARNED AGAINST IDOLATRY (CONT'D)
4.IN EPHESUS AND COLOSSE
- Brother Paul, an Apostle warned the Gentiles who were Ephesians and Colossians about idolatry. What does this mean?
- The usual explanation for how covetousness is idolatry is to find the elements of idolatry in covetousness. At root, idolatry in the Hebrew Scriptures is the placing of God to any place lower than the top. So, if you are longing after something that is not yours, to the point where you place your desire for it above your desire for God, they are in effect practicing a sort of idolatry.
- So, it is not just that covetousness is idolatry, but because covetousness has features of idolatry. Covetousness is idolatry because idolatry itself stems from covetousness to begin with.
- The Hebrew word 'betsa' that translated covetousness means to plunder, to acquire or possess an insatiable desire for dishonest gain. The Greek words that translated covetousness in the New Testament convey “greed, setting the heart upon, longing or lusting for.” In God's eyes, this unlawful desire is considered the equivalent of committing idolatry. Coveting, when actually carried out, can become the sins of adultery, stealing and lying. Our tendency to covet can lead us to idolize, to actually worship the physical things as our ·source of contentment.
- According to Ephesians 5:5, what will happen to idolaters? And according to Colossians 3:5, what must an idolaters do to inherit (not to lose) his reward(s) in the kingdom of God and Jesus Christ?

CONCLUSION: Any Christian who engages in idolatry of any kind will not inherit the kingdom of God and Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:5);that is why the Bible says that we must put to death this fleshy, lustful and unlawful desire. Therefore brethren, you are warned not to engage in idolatry.

TEXT: I CORINTHIANS 5:9-13
MEMORY VERSE: “But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral (fornicator), or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard or an extortioner not even to eat with such a person” I Corinthians 5:11.

INTRODUCTION: The New Testament did not take the issue of idolatry and idolaters with levity but with seriousness. This is the reason it will have to be judged immediately, when seeing it being practiced.
LESSON
I. GENTILES WERE WARNED AGAINST IDOLATRY (CONTD)
3.IN CORINTH (CONT'D)
- In the New Testament Church principles and practices, there is love and discipline going together. Discipline is part of love. Therefore, since the Church is a fertile land, any seed of sin anyone is trying to bring in or sown must immediately be judged, depending on the level or gravity of that sin. But, in the case of idolatry, the idolater must be excommunicated or put away from the fellowship of the brethren.
- If anyone engages himself in idolatry, it depicts that the person has not come out of the world as he is professing and he needs to come out of the world. I Corinthians 5:10
- According to I Corinthians 5:11, what are those things we should not do with anybody who is an idolater put away or excommunicated from the fellowship of the Church?
- According to I Corinthians 5:9-11, mention other sins categorized with idolatry? How many are they?
- According to I Corinthians 5:6-8, why must we judge, discipline and put away the idolater(s) and their company from the fellowship of the saints?

CONCLUSION: We are to judge, discipline and put away the sin committed by the people of God. We are only concerned with the people inside (the Brethren) to be disciplined and less concerned with the people of the world who are outside. It is God who judges those who are outside (that is, those who are in the world). “For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. But, when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.” I Corinthians 11:31-32.

TEXT: II CORINTHIANS 6:16-18
MEMORY VERSE: "And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said, I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be my people." II Corinthians 6:16.

INTRODUCTION: The temple of the living God and that of the idols are different from each other. They are two parallel lines that can never meet and because of this, there cannot, there is no and there can never be any agreement between them. Why and how? This is what we shall be examining to show us that God goes against idolatry and the warning against idolatry.

LESSON
I. GENTILES WERE WARNED AGAINST IDOLATRY (CONT'D)
3. IN CORINTH (CONT'D)
- There is a difference between a temple and a shrine. Temple is a place or an edifice where the people who worship God or idol gather together, but, the temple of the living God is different from that of the gods or idols. While a shrine is a place of worship hallowed by association with some sacred things or person, a holy or revered place. God has no shrine all over the world but idols do. What is the difference between the temple of the living God and that of the idols or gods? What other differences can you deduce between temple and shrine? Can there be any agreement between them?

- Brother Paul in this passage is warning the Gentiles against idolatry. It is only the God of Christians who lives in them who they carry all about, all other gods are not like Him, they are stationed in their shrines or temples.

- According to II Corinthians 6:16, what did God say that He will do in His temple? According to Revelation 21:21-23, can you say that this is achieved by God?

- According to II Corinthians 6:17, what did God say we should do? What should we come out from?

- According to II Corinthians 6:16:18, what will be the outcome of separating ourselves from idols and other things mentioned?

CONCLUSION: When we have nothing to do with idols, God promised that He will dwell in us and walk among us, He will be our God and we shall be His people. He will receive us. He will be a father to us and we shall be His sons and daughters. God cannot live in any man who has an idol with him.

TEXT: 1 Corinthians 10:23-33
MEMORY VERSE: “Therefore, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
INTRODUCTION: Idolatry does not glorify the living God. It is a sin.We must desist from it.
LESSON
I. GENTILES WERE WARNED AGAINST IDOLATRY (CONT'D)
3. IN CORINTH (CONT'D)
DOING ALL THINGS TO THE GLORY OF GOD
- All things are lawful for us, but not all things are helpful, not all things edify and glorify God. Because of this, let no one seek his own thing, but each one of us the other's well-being. 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 NKJV.
- A lot of things selling in the market are things offered to idols and many even have been handled by the demons, witches and the likes. In this case, we need not to eat them or make use of them but according to 1 Corinthians 10:25-26, what can we do to the edible things sold in the market? When we buy them, what must we not do? Why must we do that?
- If any unbeliever invites us to dinner or party or celebration and we desire to go with them, what must we do and reason for the action according to 1 Corinthians 10:27?
- But when we are invited to a dinner, party or celebration and food is set before us and someone informed us that, "This was offered to idols", then, what must we do to that food and the reason for taking such action(s) according to 1 Corinthians 10:28-29,8:7,10:12-13?
- According to 1 Corinthians 10:20, what must we do to any and all food set before us?

CONCLUSION: "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God, Give no offence, either to the Jews or the Greeks or the Church of God. Just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit of many that they may be saved" (1 Corinthians 10:31-33).

TEXT: I Corithians 10:15-22

MEMORY VERSE: "Rather that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons" (I Corinthians 10:20).

INTRODUCTION: Whenever anyone goes after worshipping of idol, he has committed one of the greatest sin to the Lord, he has broken first of the ten commandments and he is provoking the Lord to jealousy.

LESSON
I. GENTILES WERE WARNED AGAINST IDOLATRY (CONT'D)

3. IN CORINTH (CONT'D)
PROVOKING THE LORD TO JEALOUSY

- In the last lesson according to 1 Corinthians 10:5-14, particularly verse 14, we saw it there that as beloved we must run away from idolatry. Today, we want to examine how we can provoke the Lord through idolatry.

- Only the living and true God is to be worshipped, not the lesser gods or man. Why should we worship God only and not lesser gods or man. According to 1 Peter 2:17 and Exodus 34:11-13, what must we do to all the people brotherhood, God, kings and idols?

- When you give yourself to idolatry, you are into covenant with that idol one way or the other. Likewise, when we partake in the breaking of bread (Lord's Supper), we enter into covenat with the Lord and ourselves as brethren. Therefore, we cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons, we cannot partake of the Lord's table and of the table of demons (I Corinthians 10:15-17:21), it is a taboo.

- Anything the Gentiles or unbelievers sacrifice, they sacrificed them to demons and not to God and we must not have fellowship with demons? Mention some of the sacrifices they sacrificed to demons which they do not realize as anything?

- We provoke the Lord to jealousy when we go into idolatry of any kind, his name is Jealous, a Jealous God. According to Exodus 34:11-17, what must we not do to idols and with the inhabitants of the land (unbelievers) and reasons we must do those things?

CONCLUSION: What am I saying then? That an idol is anything or what is offered to idols is anything? Rather that the things which Gentiles sacrifice to demons and not God, and I do not want you to have fellowships with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of the demon; you cannot partake of the Lord's table and of the table of demons" (I Corinthians 10:19-21). "Therefore, whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy (idolatry) manner will be guity of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgement to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged" (I Corinthians 11:27-31).

SUB-TOPIC: FLEE IDOLATRY
TEXT: I Corinthians 10:5-10
MEMORY VERSE: "Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry” 1 Corinthians 10:14.

INTRODUCTION: Brother Paul in his admonition and warning to the Corinthians told them that they should not become idolaters as some of them were before. He then referred them to the days of the Israelites in the wilderness that "As it is written, the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play." He then told them to flee idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:6:14).
LESSON
I. GENTILES WERE WARNED AGAINST IDOLATRY (CONT'D)
3.IN CORINTH FLEE IDOLATRY
- The Bible enjoined us to resist the devil and he will flee from us (James 4:7). Devil is a coward, when you resist him, he will run away from you. Therefore, whenever you see him challenging you, wait for him and fight him, he cannot defeat you, you will conquer him.
- According to 1 Corinthians 6:18, 10:14 and II Timothy 2:22, what must we flee from?
- Discuss extensively the reasons we must flee from each of those elements mentioned in the above passages found in bullet two.

CONCLUSION: Devil is a coward when you fight him without sin, lust and worshipping of the idol, he will run away from you. Devil is not powerful enough to face you but he will tempt you to commit sin when you commit any sin, you have given the devil the privilege to attack and defeat you if you did not repent from that sin. The temptation is the allurement or attraction to evil. Temptation in itself is not a sin but yielding to it. Idolatry is a temptation yielded to. I Corinthians 10:13 talked about temptation and in verse 14, it started with "therefore", and then followed by "my beloved flee from idolatry" (I Corinthians 10:13-14). "Therefore, my beloved flee from idolatry. "

INTRODUCTION: In Rome, there are lots of idols they worshipped, an idol for a day. This has been in the existence before the Gospel of Jesus Christ which reveals the righteousness, salvation and power of God from faith to faith which was preached to them (Romans 1:15-17). When they finally accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ, they were warned against idolatry, how? LESSON
I. GENTILES WERE WARNED AGAINST IDOLATRY (CONT'D)
2.IN ROME
- Paul warned the Romans against ungodliness or anything that was against God. That was why the anger of God was revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of 3men, including idolatry.
- The people knew that there is a God in heaven who created the heavens and the earth but refused to worship him (did not glorify Him) and served idols. According to Romans 1:21, what led to this?
- According to Romans 1:23:25:27, what did their foolish darkened hearts made them to do?
- When they decided to follow their darkened hearts, what was God's reaction to their action according to Romans 1:24:26:27-29?
- It is an error to go into idolatry and anyone going into it will receive in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. Romans 1:27

CONCLUSION: "Who, knowing the righteous judgment of God that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them" (Romans 1:32 NKJV).

MEMORY VERSE: "But concerning the Gentiles who believe, we have written and decided that they should observe no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from things offered to idols ..."(Acts 21:25 NKJV).

INTRODUCTION: The New Testament forbids the worshipping of an idol in any form. In section three, we shall be examining how the New Testament forbade it. The Gentiles were warned against idolatry in the New Testament, how? This and some other sub-headings are what we shall focus in section three.

LESSON
I. GENTILES WERE WARNED AGAINST IDOLATRY
1.IN ANTIOCH
- Certain men from Judea came to Antioch the land of Gentiles and taught the brethren that unless they are circumcised according to the custom of Moses and keep the law, they cannot be saved, to whom the Elders, Apostles and the Church at Jerusalem gave no such commandment. Acts 15:1:23-27 (vs 24).

- Under the New Testament principle, going back to the Leviticus sacrifices in the law amount to sacrificing to the demons and not to the Living God. Why is it that going back to any Leviticus sacrifice in the New Testament is amounting to sacrificing to demons? Discuss and give examples.

- When the Elders, Apostles and Brethren at Jerusalem considered the teaching of those men who came down from Judea to Antioch, what were those things they were asked to abstain themselves from according to Acts 15:20:29? Through whom was the letter sent to Antioch according to Acts 15:22? What happened after the letter had been read to the multitude of the brethren who were Gentiles in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia according to Acts 15:23:29-31?

CONCLUSION: The multitude of the brethren who were in Antioch were admonished to abstain from things polluted and offered to idols. When the letter was read, they all rejoiced and were encouraged in the Lord.
