TEXT: JOHN 8:48-59
TOPIC: FALSE ACCUSATIONS

JOHN 8:48-59 NIV

48:The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”

49:“I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me.

50:I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge.

51:Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”

52:At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death.

53:Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”

54:Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.

55:Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.

56:Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”

57:“You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

58:“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

59:At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

FALSE ACCUSATIONS

Our lives are full of uncertainties. Some people falsely accuse others just because of what they were told about that person or even through what they just imagined about the individual.

Jesus addressed the Jewish leaders who were misinformed or for their lack of proper understanding of His personhood.

They saw Him as an ordinary man whom they could confront and not necessarily as the Saviour He is.

We must have a deep knowledge of Christ as well as seek to know things in their fullness before reaching any conclusions so as to avoid having the wrong impression about brethren and damage the sweet relationship that God has called us to enjoy.

QUESTION: What was your response to the negative rumours you heard about another Christian?

PRAYER: Help me, dear Lord, to close my ears to any negative comment aimed at making me accuse a fellow believer and grant me the grace to always stand by the truth. Amen.

TEXT: JOHN 8:31-47
TOPIC: STANDING FOR THE TRUTH

JOHN 8:31-47 NIV

31:To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.

32:Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33:They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

34:Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.

35:Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.

36:So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

37:I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.

38:I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”

39:“Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did.

40:As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.

41:You are doing the works of your own father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

42:Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me.

43:Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.

44:You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

45:Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!

46:Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?

47:Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

STANDING FOR THE TRUTH

Truth has become a stranger to many people, including those who are called to live for God and serve His purpose.

Many who have professed Christ would rather tell a lie to please men than stand for the truth. To them, truth is relative rather than absolute.

In this passage, Jesus confronts the Jewish leaders with truths that didn’t seem to sit well in their hearts. He also informed them that they were children of the devil and not of Abraham because of their life styles.

We must learn to practice truthful living in this corrupt world so as to impact the world that Jesus has called us to win to Him.

QUESTION: How do you react to the lies that have infiltrated the Church and how can we overcome them?

PRAYER: Help me, dear Lord, to understand that You are the truth and grant me the grace to live by the truth, no matter the consequences, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TEXT: JOHN 2:1-11
TOPIC: DID JESUS MAKE INTOXICATING BEVERAGES?

JOHN 2:1-11 NIV

1:On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,

2:and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

3:When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4:“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5:His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6:Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

7:Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8:Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so,

9:and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside

10:and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11:What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

DID JESUS MAKE INTOXICATING BEVERAGES?

In most African communities, clusters of drunken people staggering around aimlessly are a common sight.

Any attempt to dissuade them from drunkenness will be met with stiff resistance and a ready-made answer: "Jesus made wine in Galilee." This argument does not hold water because the wine Jesus made was not an alcoholic beverage that get's one drunk stupor. The Bible doesn't contradict itself.

Jesus cannot make an alcoholic intoxicant that has been forbidden by God. Grape juice has been referred to in the Bible as 'new wine' (Proverbs 20:1; 31:4-5; Ephesians 5:18).

The World Health Organization estimates that alcohol kills three million people throughout the world every year. In other words, alcohol is the cause of 5.3 percent of all human deaths annually. About one in every twenty deaths worldwide results from alcohol-related disease, injuries, accidents, murder, or su***de.

The rate of alcohol deaths is greater than that of HIV/AIDS, which causes less than 2 percent of deaths worldwide.

It is unthinkable that the wine Jesus made was an intoxicating alcoholic beverage. It was, in fact, fresh grape juice that is called new wine.

QUESTION: Are you a victim of alcoholism?

PRAYER: Help me, Lord, I don't want to be a slave to alcohol consumption. Please help me to be free from possible addiction.

SATURDAY, 26 JULY
TEXT: PSALM 24:1–10
TOPIC: WE ARE ALL TENANTS ON EARTH

PSALM 24:1–10 NIV

1:The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;

2:for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.

3:Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place?

4:The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.

5:They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior.

6:Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, God of Jacob.[c]

7:Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.

8:Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

9:Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.

10:Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty— he is the King of glory.

WE ARE ALL TENANTS ON EARTH

The first two opening verses of Psalm 24 affirm the irrefutable fact that God is the creator and owner of everything, animate and inanimate.

It makes nonsense of the so-called scientific evolutionary theory which holds that the entire universe and its content are products of random mutations out of nothing.

Man is too small to rob God of His position as the creator and landlord of the entire universe. Indeed, the world and all that is in it belongs to the Lord.

It is helpful to remember that we are stewards of whatever God gives us. We never really possess anything during our brief sojourn on earth.

God simply loans the earth to us while we are here. It was God's property before you were born and God will loan it to someone else after you die.

At the end of your life on earth, you will be evaluated and rewarded according to how well you handled what God entrusted to you.

QUESTION: What are the greatest matters God has entrusted to me?

PRAYER: Help me to be a good steward of the money, the time and the wealth You have given to me to manage.
