Saint Apollinaris, the patron saint of Ravenna, Italy, is a significant figure in Catholic tradition. According to legend, he was a disciple of Saint Peter and was sent to Ravenna as its first bishop around 50 AD to spread Christianity.
Apollinaris faced persecution under the Roman Empire, was exiled, tortured, and possibly martyred. He died after being beaten and left to die on the streets of Ravenna or Classis, and his followers buried him. A basilica was later built over his tomb, and his relics are now kept in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
He's often invoked for protection against epilepsy and gout, and his feast day is celebrated on July 20th. In some places, people attend Mass, processions, or other events to honor him. His legacy is significant in Ravenna, and his impact on Catholic tradition continues to be felt.
