Something happened in Galatians 2. Apostle Paul by confronted Apostle Peter. It was not a private confrontation it was an open confrontation. He did so because Apostle was acting hypocritical in city of Antioch.

Initially, Apostle Peter ate with the gentile when he visited Paul but when James and other believers from Jerusalem joined them in Antioch Peter stopped eating with them because he didn't want James and other believers to criticize him for eating with the gentiles because they were uncircumcised but they were believers.

Apostle Paul saw that act as a double standard life style. So Apostle Paul rebuked Apostle Peter openly.

Apostle Peter's action was preaching a different gospel to the gentiles... That's, circumcision makes you acceptable to God not just your Faith in the finished work of Christ.

Circumcision is keeping the law. So Paul was saying if keeping the law is what makes one acceptable by God then Jesus Christ died in vain.

Galatians 2:16
Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.”
