After our breakfast at 5:30 a.m., we departed from Kushinagar at 6:30 a.m., embarking on our journey to Lumbini. Crossing the Indian immigration at the Sonauli Border proved to be a lengthy process. It took us approximately four hours to clear both the Indian and the Nepalese immigration checkpoints.

➢ 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗽𝗮
Finally, we arrived at Nepal and had a quick lunch nearby. Our first stop was Ramagrama Stupa, an ancient structure standing 10 meters high and 23.5 meters in diameter. It is the only unexcavated [CMC13.1]stupa that still contains the Buddha’s relics, making it a site of great historical and spiritual significance.
Later in the day, we checked in at the Buddha Maya Gardens Hotel, where we had dinner and rested, concluding our journey-filled day.

Kushinagar - Robe Offerring to the Blessed One🙏🏻
5/3/2025 - Mahāparinibbāna Temple

We are truly blessed to offer a robe to the Reclining Buddha at the Mahāparinibbāna Temple. From the main entrance, our entire group mindfully held onto the robe, walking together in a graceful procession.

Step by step, we cultivated presence, unity, and gratitude.
In this simple yet deeply meaningful act of offering, we paid our utmost respect to the Buddha. Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu 🙏

After our and early breakfast, we departed for the Mahāparinibbāna Temple. We were truly blessed to meet and to have the opportunity to pay respect to The Most Venerable Sayadawgyi Dr. Bhaddanta Gyaneshwar, President of the Kushinagar Bhikkhu Sangha, and to receive his blessings.

After taking a group photo, we prepared to offer a robe to the Reclining Buddha rŪpa. From the main entrance, our entire group mindfully held onto the giant robe as we walked in procession into the Mahāparinibbāna Temple, offered the robe and paid our deepest respect to the Buddha. Later, we sat around the Reclining Buddha rŪpa to chant the Mettā Sutta, amidst the serene and sacred atmosphere.

Later, we visited The Most Venerable Sayadawgyi Dr. Bhaddanta Gyaneshwar again at his monastery, where we offered robes, navakamma and allowable requisites. Following some light refreshments, we returned to the hotel for lunch.

In the afternoon, we revisited the Mahāparinibbāna Temple (after our visit to the Cremation (Ramabhar) Stupa) for a meditation session. We also took time to observe the Reclining Buddha rŪpa from different perspectives:
- When viewed from the front of the face - one can discern a smiling mood in the face;
- When viewed from the middle part of the body - one can discern a mood of suffering;
- When viewed from the feet- one can discern the calm and serenity in the face.

➢ Cremation (Ramabhar) Stupa or Makuta -Bandhana Cetiya
Next, we visited Cremation Stupa, the sacred Buddha’s cremation site. We paid homage with a PŪjā and chanted the Mettā Sutta, followed by a meditation session facing the stupa. Sayadaw U Kesara then gave a deeply moving Dhamma sharing.

➢ Buddha Relic Distribution Site, Village Aniruddhawa
Later, we visited the Buddha Relic Distribution Site, where the the Brahmin Dona had helped to resolve the dispute regarding the distribution of the relics. However, the actual physical distribution of the relics occurred at the cremation site.

The day came to a close, we returned to the hotel for dinner.

p/s : We felt deeply blessed to have paid our respects to the Late Most Venerable Sayadawgyi Dr. Bhaddanta Gyaneshwar during our trip. With heartfelt reverence, may his merits and wisdom continue to shine and guide all beings on the path of Dhamma.

*Vaishali – Kushinagar

Our journey continued as we explored the historical and sacred sites of Vaishali, a place of great significance in the Buddhist history.

➢ Kolhua – The Ancient City of Vaishali
In the morning, we visited Kolhua, the remains of ancient Vaishali. This revered site was where a local chief of monkeys offered a bowl of honey to the Buddha, a gesture of deep devotion.
Vaishali holds a special place in the Buddhist history as:

● The place where the Licchavis invited the Buddha to help them alleviate famine, epidemic of an infectious disease and evil spirits that affected them. The Buddha then preached the Ratana Sutta and instructed Ven. Ānanda to go around the city to recite it, causing the remaining evil spirits to flee, those who had suffered from evil influences regained their health and all pestilences disappeared;
● The Buddha finally consented to the formation of the Bhikkhuni Order, following Ven. Ānanda's heartfelt plea on behalf of Mahā Pajāpati Gotamī and 500 Sakyan ladies, and the site of the first Bhikkhuni nunnery, and the Sw****ka Shaped Monastery;
● The Buddha spent his last Vassa (rains retreat) where at the Cāpāla Shrine, he relinquished the will to live and announced that he will enter into Mahāparinibbāna three months later.

We also visited the Asokan Pillar beside the Asoka Stupa , erected by Emperor Asoka more than 2,250 years ago. Standing at 6.7 meters high above the ground, this historical monument features a lion capital facing to the north (Kushinagar), marking the Buddha’s last journey towards Kushinagar. Beside the Asoka Stupa is a large tank dug by a band of monkeys in front of the Kutagarasala.
With Sayadaw U Kesara’s guidance, we did our PŪjā, chanted the Ratana Sutta, followed by a meditation session, amidst the tranquil surroundings before heading to our next destination.

➢ Buddha’s Relics Stupa
Next, we visited the Relic Stupa built by the Licchavis clan to enshrine their portion of the Buddha’s relics. We spent some time paying homage.

➢ Kesariya Stupa – One of the Largest Stupa in the World
On our way to Kushinagar, we made a stop at the Kesariya Stupa, one of the tallest and largest Buddhist stupas in the world. This magnificent structure is believed to have been built by the Licchavis clan to venerate the end of the life of the Buddha and to enshrine the Buddha’s alms bowl given to them by the Buddha when he requested them to return to their homes instead of following him to Kushinagar.

Standing at approximately 32 meters high, the Kesariya Stupa is an awe-inspiring reminder of the Buddha’s legacy. We took a moment to pay homage amidst the peaceful atmosphere before resuming our journey.

We arrived safely in Kushinagar around 5:30 p.m. and checked into Om Regency Hotel. After As it had been a long day, we rested early to prepare for the key highlight tomorrow - the visit to Mahāparinibbāna Temple.

Our day began with an early morning visit to the Mahabodhi Temple, where we once again paid homage to the Buddha in the Sanctum. We then embarked on a meaningful journey to the seven sacred sites where the Buddha spent the 7 weeks following his enlightenment:

1. First Week – Pallaṅka Sattāha- The Buddha sat on the Aparājita Throne (Victory Throne) for 7 days experiencing the Bliss of Emancipation (Arahantship bliss). During the first watch, middle watch and last watch of the first waning day of Vesakha, the Buddha contemplated on the Dependent Origination (Paticcasamuppāda ) in forward and backward orders.

2. Second Week – Animisa Sattāha - From a short distance from the Bodhi tree, the Buddha stood gazing at the Bodhi Tree without blinking for one whole week as a mark of profound gratitude to the Bodhi tree that sheltered him during his struggle for Enlightenment. At that spot (known as Animisacetiya) King Asoka erected a shrine called Animisilocana Cetiya.

3. Third Week –Cankama Sattāha - : The Buddha spent the whole week on walking meditation, pacing up and down on a jewelled walk created by Devas and Brahmas (that place is called Ratanācankama Cetiya), between the Aparājita Throne and Animisacetiya.

4. Fourth Week – Ratanāghara Sattāha The Buddha spent the 4th week in the Jewelled House (Ratanāghara) created by Devas and Brahmas, contemplating on the intricacies of the Abhidhamma. Rays of six colours emitted from his body as he contemplated on the doctrine of the Paṭṭhāna or Conditional Relations, the seventh treatise of the Abhidhamma.

5. Fifth Week – Ajapāla Sattāha - Ajapāla Banyan tree (near the Bodhi tree): Absorbed in the Bliss of Emancipation, the Buddha seated under the Ajapāla Banyan tree, declared the qualities of a true Brahmin in response to a question of a conceited Brahmin.

6. Sixth Week – Mucalinda Sattāha – The Buddha was meditating under the Mucalinda tree and at that time the great unseasonal rain fell for seven days. A serpent king, Mucalinda came out and coiled its body around the Buddha with its expanded hood covering the Buddha’s head to protect him from the rain, cold, heat, gnats, mosquitoes, flies etc.

7. Seventh Week – Rājāyatana Sattāha– Rājāyatana tree: The Buddha sat under the Rājāyatana tree and absorbed in the bliss of Arahantship for seven days. After the forty-ninth days, the two merchant brothers from Myanmar, Tapussa and Bhallika offered rice cakes and balls of honey-food to the Buddha.

They were the first 2 lay disciples who took the twofold refuge in the Buddha and Dhamma. When they asked the Buddha for an object of worship, The Buddha gave them eight strands of his hairs. The precious hair relics are presently enshrined at the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar.

We concluded our visit with PŪjā, chanting the Mettā Sutta, and meditation, amidst the serene and sacred atmosphere.

Later, we had the great opportunity of offering Sanghika Dāna to more than 40 student monks and 3 senior monks at Mahayana Hotel, and offering of navakamma and allowable requisites. We also did sharing and transferenceof merits. We rejoiced at having the opportunity to do these wholesome acts.

Before continuing our journey to Vaishali, we made a meaningful stop at the Buddhabumi Meditation Centre, where we paid homage to Sayadaw U Kesara and 2 other Sayadaws. With deep respect, we offered a new laptop, navakamma and allowable requisites as well as donation to the building of the Meditation Centre.

We arrived safely at Vaishali around 7:00 p.m. and had our dinner; bringing a close to a fulfilling and enriching day.

𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽 – 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟮 (𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟭-𝟭𝟮, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱)

In March 2025, SDS Teachers, volunteers & friends continued to complete the journey of the Eight Great Places of Buddhist Pilgrimage. In March 2023 , we visited Bodhgaya (then Uruvelā), Sarnath (then Deer Park, Isipatana) and Rajgir (then Rājagaha). For this 2025 trip, we visited Kushinagar (then Kusinārā), Lumbini, Vaishali (then Vesālī), Sravasti (then Sāvatthi) and Sankasia(then Sankassa) to complete the said journey. The Buddha told Ven. Ānanda before his parinibbāna that there are four places the sight of which should arouse saṁvega or sense of urgency or emotion in the faithful i.e. where the Tathāgata was born, where the Tathāgata attained supreme enlightenment, where the Tathāgata set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma and where the Tathāgata attained the Nibbāna-element without remainder.

It was truly an inspiring and fulfilling journey for all of the participants.

Day 1 – 1/3/2025 KUL-BKK : All of the participants flew into Bangkok in transit for the flight to Bodhgaya the next day.

Day 2 - 2/3/2025 BKK-Bodhgaya, Bihar
*Bodhiraja Monastery
*Mahabodhi Temple

After breakfast at our hotel in Bangkok, we proceeded to the airport for our flight to Bodhgaya.

Upon arrival at Gaya Airport, we received a warm welcome from our local tour guide, Dham Raj, who gave us a brief introduction before we headed to Sujata Hotel.

We were delighted to meet Sayadaw U Kesara, who graciously led us to Bodhi Raja Monastery (next to Sujata Hotel), where we had the opportunity of paying our respect to Ven. Dr. Sundara. We offered a robe, navakama and allowable requisites to Ven Dr. Sundara.
Next, we visited the Mahabodhi Temple, at the main shrine hall or Sanctum , we paid homage to the Buddha, did the robe offering and witnessed the putting on of our robe on the Buddha rūpa in memory of (as a transference of merit to) our ex-SDS Principal, the late Mrs Wang (Teh Seok Im). We also had our first PŪjā session, chanting the Mettā Sutta and meditating at Mahabodhi Temple near the sacred Bodhi Tree. We also had the opportunity to pay respect to Sayadaw U Rewata who was also at the Mahabodhi Temple.
We ended the day with dinner at Sujata Hotel. It was a meaningful experience for us.

🌟 Welcoming the Horse Year: A Day of Calligraphy & Connection 🌟

We were deeply grateful to spend the afternoon with Mr. Wong, an SJBA calligraphy teacher and the father of two of our SDS teachers, who generously shared the history and spirit of Chinese calligraphy with us.

At 80 years old, Mr. Wong embodies a rare presence—steady, grounded, and fully in the moment. Through his stories and gentle guidance, we were reminded that calligraphy is not merely about form or technique, but about cultivating the heart and being present with each stroke. What unfolded was more than a lesson; it became a beautiful bridge between generations and a meaningful space to form new connections.

Guided by him, we each wrote our own “福” on red paper, marking the beginning of the year with intention and joy, and welcoming the Horse Year with hearts full of blessings — 福气满满 ❤️

As we begin this new year, we would also like to wish all SDS teachers, parents, and students a joyful, healthy, and prosperous Horse Year.
May the year ahead bring strength, clarity, and forward momentum, and may we move through it with courage, kindness, and purpose 🐎🧧

#福气满满
