I grew up with French, Spanish, and Arabic. I studied languages at university. I'm fluent in multiple languages. Yet when it came to teaching my own kids? I was completely lost.

And I'm not alone. So many mothers struggle with this, no matter their background, no matter their advantage.

I made all the mistakes & I learned the hard way.

This Eid brought me so much joy, but one thing stood out more than anything else, being able to understand the khutbahs and duas in Arabic.

There’s something incredibly profound about standing in congregation and actually comprehending the words being spoken.

It’s not just about understanding the translation, it’s about feeling the depth, the emotion, and the spiritual weight of every dua and every point in the khutbah.

This made me reflect on the profound difference between being physically present and spiritually connected. When you understand Arabic, you feel every dua deeply in your soul. The khutbah speaks directly to your heart. Eid becomes spiritually nourishing rather than just socially celebrated.

But when you don’t understand, you miss so much of the beauty. The words pass by like beautiful sounds you can’t quite comprehend, you know it’s meaningful, but it feels distant and disconnected.

This Eid, I was profoundly grateful that my children could understand the Arabic duas and khutbah. Not because they’re fluent Arabic speakers, but because they’re building that precious connection to Allah’s words. That moment when they recognize familiar phrases and understand the meaning, that’s the real Eid gift that keeps giving.

This is why we teach Arabic.

It’s not about perfect fluency or academic achievement.

It’s about giving our children what many of us wish we had, the ability to understand worship in its original language, the direct connection to Allah’s words, and the spiritual depth that comes from truly comprehending.

We’re not just teaching Arabic,
we’re building bridges to Allah’s words, one word at a time.
