There is a Remedy For Everyone’s Disease

All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23, NIV.)

The thing that worries me is that the church in the West does not on the whole understand the Gospel, or it would overflow with it. It would be the salt of the earth! It would be the light of the world! From within it would flow rivers of living water instead of drops.

I have preached in third world countries. In those countries when the Gospel is understood, the people overflow! Why doesn’t it happen in the West? Because we have forgotten the Gospel or never come to understand it, and the reason for that is because we are too comfortable and too self-satisfied.

It is because the remedy is never appreciated unless the disease is known. Most people in the west are too comfortable. They mistake a full stomach for a good conscience. They mistake a good suit for the robe of righteousness. They mistake a home for the home of the true church which is composed of all the twice born.

If we don’t know the disease, we will never appreciate the remedy and I submit to you that we in the west do not fully understand the disease. What is the disease? Romans tells us: we have all sinned and we all come short of the glory of God.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37–40, NIV).

We have a natural human tendency to categorise everything as true or false, good or bad, and yours or mine. And then, even worse, we use that to build walls between others and ourselves. We put people into little boxes.

Jesus taught that in the Kingdom life, it must not be like that (Matthew 12:48). Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to love God, and the second is to love your neighbour as yourself (Matthew 22:37–40). Jesus puts God above all, and everyone else is on a level playing field.

Christ never made total uniformity in doctrinal understanding or perfect faith to be the criteria for being his disciple. If so, none of the original twelve disciples would have made it. Rather he said that the criterion was love (John 13:35). And the love of God does not exalt or puff itself up (1 Corinthians 13:4), Those who share this love will never consider themselves closer to God or more favoured by him than those who belong to another Christian group.

We should fellowship in a Christian church according to our understanding of that truth as found in the Word, and as the Spirit of God convicts our conscience. However, let’s do that knowing that all those who love Christ are our brothers and sisters.

How encouraging is the thought of the Redeemer's never-ceasing intercession for us. When we pray, he pleads for us; and when we are not praying, he is advocating our cause, and by his supplications shielding us from unseen dangers. Notice the word of comfort addressed to Peter: "Simon, Simon, Satan wants to have you so he may sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not." We little know what we owe to our Saviour's prayers. When we reach the hilltops of heaven, and can review our lives to see how the Lord our God has led us, we will truly be able to praise him for guiding us and for undoing much of the mischief which Satan was attempting to do on earth. Then we will be able to thank him for his untiring care of us, and for his constant intercession with God on our behalf.

SEVEN WAYS JESUS IS BETTER

Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.

Hebrews 6:9
What was the point of Jesus coming to our sinful world? And how did He accomplish everything we needed in order to be reconciled to God?

We get answers to these questions in the book of Hebrews. And it starts in Hebrews 6:9 — “Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.”

What are these better things, though?

Better hope – “For the law made nothing perfect; but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.” (Hebrews 7:19)
Jesus is first introduced as a better hope in Hebrews 7:19. He is compared to the law, which ‘made nothing perfect,’ but he, the better hope, is the way in which we can draw near to God. His priesthood, as opposed to the priests of the Old Testament, gives us the ability to be made perfect, through His death and resurrection (not by our own works).
Better covenant – “This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.” (Hebrews 7:22)
The first covenant, which came with the law, could not be perfectly upheld, because the priests and followers were themselves not perfect. But Jesus can save the ‘uttermost’ (Hebrews 7:25) because of His perfection and sacrificial death and resurrection. The covenant that included the law was good but ultimately impossible to uphold, but the new covenant (1 Corinthians 11:25) is perfect because God Himself (Jesus) fulfills every requirement.
Better promises – “But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.” (Hebrews 8:6)
We are also told in Hebrews that this new, better covenant was ‘enacted on better promises.’ What does this mean? Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Ezekiel 37:26-28 both show that within the Old Testament was the expectatio

Pray this week:

Lord, show me how to trust you to be the perfect sacrifice for me. Thank you so much that you have done what I could not — follow the law perfectly — and then be sentenced to death for my sins. I praise you for your resurrection, Jesus, and for how your work on the cross and in the grave has saved me from destruction. I love you, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
