Fellow Malawians and International Community,
We here today with heavy hearts, for our nation has witnessed acts that shame our values and betray our Constitution. The Mayor of Blantyre City has assaulted women, humiliated a pregnant mother, and stood before us with arrogance, declaring he will never apologize. This is not leadership. This is abuse of power.
Let us be clear: Malawi is a secular state. Our Constitution protects every citizen—Christian, Muslim, Hindu, traditionalist, and non-believer alike. No one has the right to impose laws outside of it. Mob justice is not justice. It is lawlessness. It is cruelty. And it has no place in our democracy.
Mob justice is nothing more than violence dressed up as order. It bypasses the courts, it denies due process, and it strips away human dignity. Our Constitution does not recognize it. Our government ethics reject it. And our people must never allow it to take root among us.
The Mayor has no excuse. He must resign. But resignation is not enough. He must be arrested. He must be charged. He must face the courts of Malawi, just as any citizen would. The Malawi Police Service has the mandate and the responsibility to act. We call upon them to fulfill their duty.
Let us remind ourselves: Malawi belongs to all of us. Our diversity is our strength. Our Constitution is our shield. And our justice system is the path to peace. We will not allow mob justice to replace the rule of law. We will not allow arrogance to replace accountability. And we will not allow violence to replace dignity.
Malawi is not an Islamic State. Malawi is not a Christian State. Malawi is not a state of any single religion. Malawi is a nation of laws, a nation of rights, and a nation of people united in their humanity.
So let us stand together. Let us demand justice. Let us protect our Constitution. And let us say, with one voice: No leader is above the law. No citizen is beneath its protection.
