Today, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Malawi had the honor of hosting visitors from Jesuit Mission Germany: Fr. Christian Braunigger, Director of Jesuitenweltweit, and Mr. Thomas Kilian. The purpose of their visit was to observe and appreciate the work being done by JRS in Malawi, particularly at Dzaleka Refugee Camp. They toured various projects, including Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Pathfinder, NAWEZA, and Pastoral Care. The visit began with a courtesy call at the Camp Manager's office.

JRS Malawi is committed to accompanying, serving, and advocating for refugees and other forcibly displaced people, ensuring they lead dignified lives and realize their full potential.

In a world where refugees are often denied their fundamental human rights, there are women and men who offer them accompaniment as a sign of hope and a path towards healing.

Among them are our staff members, who make our mission possible every day.

Today, on World Humanitarian Day, we honour them and all those who put their lives at the service of the most vulnerable.

The greenhouse at the Arrupe Learning Center garden is now fully operational, thanks to the efforts of our dedicated alumni from the agriculture course under the JRS Malawi Pathfinder project. They are actively using this space to apply and reinforce their skills by planting a variety of vegetables, including carrots, onions, beans, and Chinese vegetables. This hands-on experience is vital for solidifying their learning and applying their knowledge in a practical setting.

Today, on July 31, we celebrate the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits and a profound spiritual guide. Born in 1491 in the Basque Region of Spain, Ignatius experienced a remarkable conversion after a severe injury during a military campaign. His journey led him to create "The Spiritual Exercises," a manual that has guided many towards a deeper relationship with God.

St. Ignatius teaches us about the God of second chances. Despite his early life of vainglory, his transformation allowed him to become a vessel for God's greater plans, ultimately founding the Jesuit Order. His legacy reminds us to let go and let God be the center of our lives, enabling us to do great things in His service.

At JRS Malawi, we draw inspiration from St. Ignatius's dedication and spiritual depth, striving to serve and uplift the communities we work with. Today, let us reflect on his questions: What have you done for Christ? What are you doing for Christ? What ought you do for Christ?

May we find God in all things and dedicate ourselves to serving others with love and grace.

Today, on World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we join the global community in raising awareness and taking action against human trafficking. This year's theme, "Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking," highlights the urgent need to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.

At JRS Malawi, we stand committed to safeguarding children and ensuring their rights and dignity are upheld. Together, we can create a world where every child is safe from exploitation and harm.

At JRS Malawi, our mission is to accompany, serve, and advocate for the most vulnerable individuals in our community. As part of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) intervention pyramid, last week we distributed rice parcels to support those most in need, including the elderly, people living with disabilities, and GBV survivors. This initiative aims to reach out to these individuals and their families, ensuring their basic needs are met. Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient community.

Today, JRS Malawi, made a significant contribution to both the refugee and host communities by donating a few essential teaching and learning materials, as well as sanitary pads. These donations were made to Ndunje Community Day Secondary School and Mpalankhwali Primary School, located in T.A Msakambewa and T.A Mkukula, where the refugee settlements are situated. The management of these schools expressed their gratitude for the support.

Additionally, we made donations to CAHWOC Private Secondary School, a privately run school within the camp. The deputy teacher at CAHWOC also thanked JRS for providing the much-needed teaching and learning materials.

On Friday, July 19, 2024, Jesuit Refugee Service Malawi donated various teaching and learning materials to Umodzi Katubza Primary School and Dzaleka Community Day Secondary School.

Patrick Kamchikwe, JRS Malawi’s Program Manager, presented the donation and emphasized JRS's commitment to cooperating with MOHDEVS, who currently manage the schools. He highlighted the importance of increasing access to quality and inclusive education for both refugees and Malawian children in and around Dzaleka Refugee Camp. The teaching and learning materials will significantly support this goal.

Chimwemwe Simwaka, Education Coordinator at Moravian Humanitarian and Development Services (MohDevs), received the donation with gratitude. She acknowledged JRS Malawi’s continuous support and mentioned that the donation comes at a crucial time, helping the schools provide outstanding learning opportunities for students and staff.

“We truly appreciate your ongoing commitment and dedication to ensuring that the young people in and around Dzaleka Refugee Camp receive the best quality education,” she said.

The digital inclusion program aims to build resilient and economically active refugees and host communities, empowering them to choose their own futures. This project equips young refugees and host communities in Dzaleka Refugee Camp, Dowa district, Malawi, with digital and livelihood skills to secure online and other jobs, thereby earning an income. The project has achieved positive results, with participants earning an average of $200 a month from freelancing. Currently, the project is recruiting the 5th cohort and is conducting an admission test for 85 applicants. This test serves two purposes:

A. To recruit 60 students for the 5th cohort.
B. To assess the students' needs so the training modules can be tailored to their basic knowledge.

"The demand for the project is high because it includes refugees in the economic world. Malawi's encampment policy restricts formal employment and limits refugees' participation in the local market. However, digital freelancing offers limitless opportunities. Previous participants have shown economic independence and the ability to meet their basic needs through decent freelancing jobs. We appreciate the support from Jesuit Mission Australia and call on organizations and corporations to support this cause," explained Precious Matipwiri, Pathfinder project manager.
