On Sunday, 26th April 2026, the Catholic Church worldwide celebrated Jesus the Good Shepherd – Vocation Sunday.

In the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, the day was celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Salima, where more than 1,500 youths came together for this year’s vibrant Vocations Sunday celebrations.

The day began with the Mission Rosary, where the youths and faithful prayed for the mission work in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe.

During the Eucharistic celebration, His Lordship Vincent Fredrick Mwakhwawa, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, encouraged young people to embrace prayer as the key to discerning their vocations and making sound life decisions.

He echoed Pope Leo XIV’s message, urging the youth to pray in silence and make proper choices for their lives.

Bishop Mwakhwawa also expressed concern over the rise of early marriages in Malawi, condemning the practice as harmful to the Church’s mission of nurturing responsible citizens.

The celebration was further marked by the commissioning of Vocations Teams, who will animate and guide fellow youths on vocation matters within Salima Parish.

During the celebration, Bishop Mwakhwawa and the youths had the chance to visit and hear every congregation about their charism and mission in the Catholic Church.

This year’s celebration carried the inspiring theme:
“Youths be on in Christ, United in Mission.”

The Auxiliary bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe, His Lordship Vincent Mwakhwawa today led delegates at the on-going Synod Assembly of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe in the Eucharistic Celebrations, marking the second week of deliberations.

Speaking after a Eucharistic Mass at St. Kizito Parish (Chigoneka), the Bishop expressed high praise for the unity and active participation of delegates.

Bishop Mwakhwawa noted that the first week was marked by open, enthusiastic dialogue as delegates successfully brought forward issues raised by small Christian communities, demonstrating a strong sense of unity and guidance by the Holy Spirit.

As the Synod moves into its concluding phase, the agenda shifts toward practical and systemic issues.

In her remarks, Theophister Kalimba, representing the youth from St. Andrea Kaggwa Parish, highlighted the freedom of expression experienced during the first week. "I feel like we are going to come up with something very concrete that is going to make our church move forward," she stated.

Similarly, Dr. Mary Shaba of the Legion of Mary emphasized the collaborative nature of the assembly, noting that the presence of sisters, brothers, priests, and lay organizations ensures that the Church "builds together as one person."

The Synod Assembly, which continues through the end of the week, aims to produce a definitive roadmap for the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, addressing both the spiritual and socio-economic realities of its congregants.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe has called on young people to embrace prayer as the key to discerning their vocations and making sound decisions about their future.

His Lordship Vincent Fredrick Mwakhwawa, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, made the appeal today during the Eucharistic celebration of Vocation Sunday at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Salima.

His Lordship emphasized the importance of reflecting on this year’s Vocation Sunday message from Pope Leo XIV, who urged the youth to pray in silence in order to make proper life choices.

At the same time, Bishop Mwakhwawa expressed concern over the rise of early marriages in some parts of Malawi. He condemned the practice, warning that it undermines the Church’s mission of nurturing responsible citizens.

Meanwhile, Father Geoffrey Chikapa, director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in the Archdiocese, stressed the need for young people to draw closer to Jesus Christ through prayer so they can respond to the call to serve in the vineyard of the Lord.

He urged the lay faithful to pass on the message of vocation to the youth and encourage them to join Catholic associations that help guide their choices.

The Archdiocese’s Vocations director, Father John Kaliwamba, acknowledged that his office will collaborate with newly commissioned vocation teams in Salima Parish to ensure fruitful outcomes and expand the initiative to other parishes.

Chrispine Limbe, Youth Chairperson in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, also encouraged his peers to remain close to God in order to make the right decisions.

He added that Vocation Sunday provides an opportunity for young people to discern their calling and commit to serving in the vineyard of the Lord.

This year vocation Sunday was celebrated under the theme, "Youths be one in Christ, United in Mission", and next year Kapiri Parish will host Vocations Sunday celebrations.

Parishioners of the newly opened Queen of the Apostles (Kamwendo) Parish in Mchinji district, have been encouraged to cultivate a strong prayer life and devote themselves to loving Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe, His Lordship Vincent Mwakhwawa, said the parishioners have the responsibility and are expected to pray together, starting from their homes, communities, and the global Church.

Speaking after the Eucharistic celebration marking the official opening of the parish, Bishop Mwakhwawa also encouraged school-going children around the area to visit the parish frequently and spend time with Jesus Christ.

Bishop Mwakhwawa then emphasized the need for total commitment from the parishioners to contribute financial and material resources to ensure the parish operates effectively.
