Mr. John Chome delivered an inspiring presentation on caring for our common home, focusing on environmental responsibility and proper waste management. He reminded the youth that everything was created by God. God created the universe and humanity to benefit from His creation, but also entrusted us with the responsibility of taking good care of it. Being aware of the beauty and value of creation helps us recognize and appreciate the Creator. Creation itself was made through Him, Jesus Christ.

He emphasized that the well-being of the Earth is closely connected to human actions and that caring for the environment is an essential part of living out our Catholic faith. Respecting and protecting creation is one way of honouring God and showing love to our neighbours. The Earth is a gift from God, and all life reflects His glory. Destroying the environment can negatively affect people, especially the poor and vulnerable, while the resources of the Earth are meant to benefit everyone. As Mahatma Gandhi famously reminded us, “The Earth has enough for everyone’s needs, but not everyone’s greed.”

Mr. Chome encouraged young people to take practical steps in caring for creation, including planting and caring for trees, conserving water, using energy responsibly, participating in environmental and wildlife clubs, and taking part in tree-planting activities. He also encouraged young people to discuss environmental issues during Catholic youth group or club meetings and Bible-sharing sessions, teach others about environmental care and proper waste management, connect with nature, make responsible choices in what they eat, wear and how they travel, and learn more through the Bible and Church teachings on the environment.

National Youth Council of Malawi Chief Executive Officer Rhoda Gadama Misomali delivered a message of solidarity to Catholic youth, encouraging them to actively participate in building a better Malawi. She emphasized that being rooted in Christ must lead young people to mission and action, saying that a young person rooted in Christ should bear fruit through good character, skills, work, innovation, service and leadership.

Mrs. Misomali encouraged the youth to reflect on where Christ is sending them today and to translate their faith into meaningful service. She highlighted the Catholic Church’s contribution to Malawi during its 125 years of evangelisation, particularly in education, healthcare and social services, and challenged young people to continue this legacy by using their talents, skills and creativity to serve both the Church and the nation.

She further stressed that investing in young people is investing in the future of Malawi, calling for an inclusive approach to national development where no young person is left behind. She encouraged Catholic youth to explore opportunities such as the Youth Innovation Fund, agricultural innovation programmes and other youth-focused initiatives, while working with the National Youth Council of Malawi to turn their ideas, skills and aspirations into meaningful action for community and national development.

Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of Zomba unpacked the theme of the 2026 National Catholic Youth Conference: “Rooted in Christ, Sent for Mission: Celebrating 125 Years of Evangelization in Malawi.”

He reminded the youth that, as Catholic young people, they are called to participate actively in evangelization by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ, faithfully fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to them, and becoming witnesses of Christ so that others may come to know the Lord.

He encouraged the youth to demonstrate through their lives that they truly know Jesus Christ. He emphasized the importance of continuous conversion, growth in faith and deepening their relationship with God as essential signs of a life committed to evangelization.

He also highlighted some of the challenges facing young Catholics today, including the influence of Pentecostal and other Christian teachings that may draw young people away from Catholic beliefs and teachings, modernity and technology, poverty, illiteracy, difficulties in understanding and receiving the Sacraments, inculturation and climate change.

In closing, Bishop Chaima reminded the youth that without Jesus Christ, something essential is missing from our lives. He encouraged them to make prayer a priority, value their relationship with God and remain committed to prayer as a powerful means of drawing closer to Jesus.

DAY 2 | NATIONAL CATHOLIC YOUTH CONFERENCE 2026

Day 2 of the National Catholic Youth Conference, under the theme “Rooted in Christ, Sent for a Mission,” was a day filled with faith, learning and fellowship. The day began with the Opening Mass led by Bishop Peter Adrian Chifukwa of the Diocese of Dedza, followed by a reflection on cerebrating 125 years of evangelisation in Malawi, shared by Bishop Chaima of the Diocese of Mangochi. Chief executive officer Rhoda Gadama Misomali of the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM), also shared a message related to this year’s theme, while Mr. John Chome led a session on waste management and caring for the environment.

The programme continued with group reflections, meaningful exchanges and sports, giving young Catholics from across Malawi an opportunity to learn, share, connect and enjoy fellowship with one another.

NATIONAL CATHOLIC YOUTH CONFERENCE 2026

Today, 26 August 2026, marks the beginning of the National Catholic Youth Conference, taking place from 26–30 August 2026 at St. Joseph’s Teachers Training College in Bembeke, Diocese of Dedza.

The conference brings together Catholic youth from across all dioceses of Malawi for a special time of prayer, faith formation, leadership development, fellowship and reflection. It is a celebration of young people coming together in faith and unity, ready to learn, grow and serve.
This year’s conference is being held under the inspiring theme: “Rooted in Christ, Sent for Mission: Celebrating 125 Years of Evangelization in Malawi.” The theme reminds young Catholics of the importance of remaining firmly rooted in Christ while embracing their responsibility to spread the Gospel and make a positive difference in society.

Over the next five days, participants will take part in prayer, leadership workshops, motivational talks, group discussions, team-building activities, cultural performances, gospel music and talent showcases.

As the conference begins today, we wish all participants a blessed, fruitful and memorable conference. May these five days strengthen their faith, renew their commitment to Christ and inspire them to go forth as young people ready to serve and make a difference.

Noel's Description

I am a Catholic youth from Maula Parish, Lilongwe, with a passion for using creativity to support the Church and its mission. My inspiration comes from my Catholic faith, the Church community, and the role of design in communicating messages of faith, hope, unity and service.

With 10 years of experience in graphic design, I have been inspired to create designs for the Church, including logos, posters, banners, publications and other communication materials.

What Inspires Me

My inspiration comes from seeing how the Church brings people together, serves communities and gives hope to those in need. I am especially inspired by the beauty of our Catholic identity, Christian symbols, Scripture, community and service.

For me, designing for the Church is more than a profession. It is an opportunity to use my God-given creative talent to serve, communicate and contribute to the mission of the Church.

I believe that good design is more than making something look beautiful—it must communicate a message and have meaning.
