Across Africa, intolerance is rising tribal tensions deepen, and violence increasingly targets those of different nationalities. Some view this unrest as orchestrated to advance hidden agendas; others call it ethnic cleansing, while some interpret it through a spiritual lens.

Amid this uncertainty, the expectation placed on church leadership is clear: to speak. Their voice should comfort the wounded, offer hope to the fearful, and challenge those driving division and violence.

Although the church is often urged to remain separate from politics, it cannot afford to be perceived as silent. Silence, too, communicates and in times like these, it can be mistaken for indifference or complicity.

The church must therefore strike a careful balance: remaining grounded in its spiritual mission while courageously addressing moral injustice. Its role is not to take sides politically, but to stand firmly for truth, peace, dignity, and the sanctity of human life. In doing so, it becomes not just a place of worship, but a moral compass in a fractured society.

The standard for Seventh-day Adventist Christians is acknowledged in the churchโ€™s Bible-based Fundamental Belief No. 13, โ€œUnity in the Body of Christ.โ€

Here it is pointed out: โ€œIn Christ we are a new creation; distinctions of race, culture, learning, and nationality, and differences between high and low, rich and poor, male and female, must not be divisive among us. We are all equal in Christ, who by one Spirit has bonded us into one fellowship with Him and with one another; we are to serve and be served without partiality or reservation.โ€

Any other approach destroys the heart of the Christian gospel.
