71 KILLED IN 478 ROAD ACCIDENTS IN 3 MONTHS — LNP

At least 71 people have died and 309 injured in 478 road accidents recorded across Liberia between January and March 2026, according to the Liberia National Police.

Police say March was the worst month, with 186 cases. Car collisions and motorcycle accidents made up nearly 70 percent of all incidents.

Montserrado County recorded the highest number of cases, while drivers and men were the most affected.

The LNP is urging road users to obey traffic laws as concerns grow over rising accidents nationwide.

LIBERIA DEPLOYS STARLINK AT FOYA BORDER AMID NETWORK CHALLENGES

Liberia has begun deploying satellite internet at a key border point in Lofa County, following reports that security officers were relying on foreign network signals to communicate.

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) says it has installed Starlink connectivity in Sorlumba, a major crossing point in Foya District, to improve real-time communication and surveillance.

The move comes after local media reports, including OK FM, indicated that officers stationed at the border had been forced to depend on Guinean network coverage, despite ongoing tensions in the area.

LTA Chairman Clarence K. Massaquoi accompanied the installation team to the site over the weekend, in what the Authority described as an urgent intervention to strengthen border operations.

Security personnel in the area welcomed the development, saying improved internet access will enhance coordination and response time.

The LTA says it is also working with major telecom providers, Lonestar Cell MTN and Orange Liberia, to expand network coverage across underserved border regions.

Authorities say additional deployments are planned nationwide as part of efforts to close connectivity gaps in strategic areas.

The lack of reliable telecommunications infrastructure along Liberia’s borders has long been a concern, particularly for security operations and cross-border monitoring.

Officials say the latest intervention is aimed at reducing those vulnerabilities while improving national security coordination.

FUEL PRICES RISE AGAIN AS GLOBAL OIL PRESSURES MOUNT

Liberia has announced a fresh increase in petroleum prices, marking the second adjustment since the escalation of tensions involving Iran disrupted global oil markets.

The Government, through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), says the new pricing takes effect April 4, 2026.

Under the revised ceiling, gasoline will now sell at US$5.09 per gallon (L$950), while fuel oil or diesel will retail at US$6.55 per gallon (L$1,225).

Officials say the increases — US$0.22 for gasoline and US$0.77 for diesel — reflect rising international petroleum costs linked to instability in major oil-producing regions.

The Government maintains that the adjustment is necessary to ensure steady supply and prevent disruptions in the domestic market.

However, the move is expected to have immediate economic consequences, with transport fares, goods prices, and operational costs for businesses likely to increase.

Liberia remains heavily dependent on imported petroleum products, making the country particularly vulnerable to global price shocks.

Authorities say inspection teams will intensify monitoring to prevent hoarding and unauthorized price hikes, warning that violators will face legal action.

The Government says it remains committed to balancing market realities with consumer protection as global uncertainties continue.

NEC TRANSITION: WEEDOR ASSUMES ROLE AS ACTING CHAIR AMID PUBLIC SCRUTINY

The leadership of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has officially changed hands, with Mr. Jonathan K. Weedor taking over as Acting Chairperson following a formal handover by outgoing Chair Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah.

The transition ceremony took place at NEC headquarters in Sinkor, where Madam Browne Lansanah presented a comprehensive turnover note, including financial and institutional updates. She highlighted that a General Auditing Commission (GAC) audit was successfully completed during her tenure, underscoring accountability efforts.

In her farewell remarks, she thanked President Joseph Boakai, NEC staff, and the Liberian people for their support, and pledged her continued availability to serve the country when called upon.

Taking over, Mr. Weedor described his return to NEC as a “homecoming,” committing to continuity, cooperation, and service in the national interest. He indicated that engagement with staff and implementation of key priorities will begin immediately.

The transition comes amid growing public criticism, particularly from opposition figures and civil society organizations, who have raised concerns over his nomination. Despite this, Mr. Weedor is now serving as Acting Chair pending confirmation by the Liberian Senate.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has nominated Jonathan K. Weedor as Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), following the resignation of former Chairperson Davidetta Browne-Lansanah.

The Executive Mansion says Weedor brings more than 16 years of experience at the NEC, including service as Commissioner and Acting Co-Chairman, with oversight of finance, procurement, and human resources.

However, the nomination has already sparked political reactions.

An executive member of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Acarous Gray, strongly criticized the move, describing the President as a “national joker” and warning of potential electoral concerns ahead of 2029.

Some opposition figures have also alleged that Weedor is politically aligned with the ruling Unity Party, citing his public commentary during the 2023 elections which they claim appeared favorable to the UP.

There has been no official confirmation from the government or Mr. Weedor regarding those claims.

Meanwhile, the NEC, in a factsheet, describes Weedor as a seasoned electoral administrator with international experience across Africa, including missions with the African Union and ECOWAS.

Pending Senate confirmation, President Boakai has directed that Weedor serves as Acting Chairman.

The Liberian Senate is expected to review the nomination when it reconvenes.

The Liberia National Police has issued a public notice clarifying that no payment is required to register a case at any police station across the country.

The announcement comes amid growing public concerns, with many Liberians reporting that they are often asked to pay fees to file complaints or even provide transportation for officers to carry out arrests.

In its statement, the Police warned that such practices are illegal and urged citizens to report any officer demanding money through its Professional Standards Department.

Authorities say the move is part of efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and restore public trust in the justice system.

𝗟𝗜𝗕𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗔 𝗣𝗨𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗦 𝟰𝟬𝟬𝗠𝗪 𝗣𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡 𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗗 𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗦

The Government of Liberia has announced a major dual-track energy plan aimed at addressing ongoing electricity shortages, including a 100MW short-term solution and a 300MW gas power project in Buchanan valued at about US$500 million.

The development comes amid widespread power outages and load shedding, with many communities experiencing hours without electricity.

Liberia currently has one of the lowest electricity access rates in the world, with an estimated over 70% to 80% of the population lacking reliable access to power, particularly outside Monrovia.

Officials say the new projects could stabilize supply, reduce reliance on imports, support businesses, and boost economic growth. However, the long-term project is not expected to be completed until 2028.

A new assessment commissioned by Forest Trends, an international non-profit organization focused on environmental and resource governance, has raised concerns about financial losses and weak oversight in Liberia’s mining sector.

The study, carried out by Liberian and international experts using data from institutions including the Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI), found that while mining companies paid over US$844 million to the government between 2007 and 2023, international records show a US$2.7 billion discrepancy in reported mineral exports.

The report suggests possible underreporting and revenue leakages, while also highlighting concerns about community benefits and environmental impact.
