Happy Mother’s Day!
My dear friends, today is the sixth Sunday of Easter. On this 6th Sunday of Easter, Jesus speaks words of comfort that cut straight to the heart: “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
Today, as the Church in Liberia celebrates Mother’s Day, those words take on a special meaning. A mother is the one who refuses to leave her child alone who stays, who watches, who holds, even when the night is long and the road is uncertain. In the same way, Christ promises us a presence that does not abandon.
Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Love here is not an emotion you feel one day and forget the next. It is a choice to remain faithful, to live according to His way. Mothers know this kind of love. It’s shown in the daily sacrifices waking before dawn to prepare food, walking long distances for water, giving up her own portion so the children can eat. She doesn’t keep a record. She just loves, and through that love, she teaches her children what it means to keep a promise, to stay true, to endure.
In today’s Gospel, according to St. John (14:15-21), Jesus knows we cannot keep His commandments on our own strength. That is why He promises the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, who will dwell with us and in us. The world cannot see this Spirit, but we know Him because He is with us. This is the same quiet strength we see in mothers. You may not always see her prayers, but they are there, lifting the household. You may not always hear her worries, but she carries them so that you can walk forward with peace. The Spirit works in the same hidden way - giving us courage when we are afraid, wisdom when we are confused, and hope when we feel alone.
My dear friends, as we honor our ever caring and loving mothers today, let us also become people who reflect Christ’s abiding presence to others. May we be the ones who stay when it’s easier to leave, who comfort when it’s easier to look away, who love when it’s easier to be indifferent. In this way, we keep His commandments, and we make our homes in Liberia places where the Spirit of Christ truly dwells. Amen.
Happy Sunday and happy Mother’s Day to all our beloved and caring mothers.
God’s choicest blessings upon you and your household. Amen.
