Local Church Launches Cassava Farm For Self-Sufficiency In Kakata

By Mount Gibi Northwest Media Team

Members of the St. Thomas Global Methodist Church in Kakata City have rolled up their sleeves to cultivate a cassava farm, marking a bold step toward financial independence and self-sufficiency for the congregation.

The initiative, driven entirely by local church members, falls under the Mount Gibi Northwest District Conference's sustainable development programs within the Global Methodist Church-Liberia (GMC-Liberia).

Church leaders emphasize that this project aligns with one of GMC-Liberia's four core pillars: Evangelism, Church Planting, Sustainable Development, and Discipleship.

Overseeing the effort are Senior Pastor of the church, Rev. Forkpah B. Johnson and Presiding Elder Rev. Peter W. Harris of the Mount Gibi Northwest District Conference.

Rev. Harris, who has led the district since its establishment in July 2025 in Ganta City, Nimba County, has been a vocal advocate for cassava farming as a practical path to church growth.

According to him, by focusing on sustainable development, the church aims to generate income through agriculture, reducing reliance on external funding.

"Cassava is a short-term investment that can generate steady income for the church," Rev. Harris urged during one of the district gatherings in Kakata, Margibi County.

He called on every local church in the district to plant cassava and encouraged the three zones within Mount Gibi Northwest District to develop large-scale farms to support ministries.

Reports indicate promising progress across the district. The reports explained that some zones have already made substantial headway in their cultivation efforts, while others are gearing up to begin planting soon.

At St. Thomas, the farm is showing strong early results: portions of the cassava are growing rapidly, with ongoing clearing and planting expanding the operation.

Church leaders’ assertion: “This farm represents more than just crops—it's a model for how faith communities can blend spiritual mission with economic empowerment.”

As the plants mature, the Presiding Elder and the leadership of the church expect the harvest to fund local ministries and inspire neighboring congregations.

Photos from the site show vibrant green shoots pushing through the soil, a testament to the members' dedication amid Kakata's tropical climate.

Meanwhile, members of the St. Thomas Global Methodist Church have committed themselves to ensuring that the church becomes independence and self-sufficient through these kinds of initiatives.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mount Gibi Northwest District Advances Agricultural Development And Evangelism Initiatives At Executive Meeting

Margibi, Liberia – September 27, 2025 – The Mount Gibi Northwest District of the Grain Coast Annual Conference of the Global Methodist Church successfully held its executive meeting on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the St. Thomas Global Methodist Church in Madina Community, Kakata City, Margibi County.

The gathering which brought together heads of various committees, focused on reviewing key issues from the recent district retreat in August and developing strategies to fund the district's growth and development.

Rev. Peter W. Harris, Presiding Elder of the district, emphasized the critical role of agriculture as the district’s economic foundation. He urged every local church to actively engage in agricultural activities and called on the three district zones to immediately launch their agricultural initiatives. Rev. Harris stressed that sustainable development through agriculture, as previously agreed at the district retreat, must be prioritized, warning that any zone or church neglecting this focus would face penalties. He described agriculture as the "heartbeat" of the newly created district.

Beyond agriculture, Rev. Harris encouraged various church departments—including women, men, youth, young adults, and the choir—to create empowerment strategies and engage in initiatives that promote positive growth within their communities.

In addition to agricultural development, the Presiding Elder highlighted evangelism and church planting as vital priorities. He urged the evangelism committee to intensify their efforts in expanding the church's outreach.

In a significant gesture, Rev. Harris presented a new motorbike to the district on behalf of the Grain Coast Annual Conference of the Global Methodist Church. This vehicle will support evangelism and church planting activities throughout the St. Paul River–Gbarpolu area, enhancing mobility and mission outreach.

The executive meeting underscored the district’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, community empowerment, and church growth as pillars for its future development.
