Hair to a tradition which dates back to the early Anuradhapura period, its beginnings are shrouded in myth and legend. Over the centuries the vihare has become a veritable treasure trove of

The architectural design of Varaka Velandhu Vihare bears a strong resemblance to a Hindu Temple (Devale). It features a hallway(Mandapa) that guides visitors into a dimly lit inner sanctum, which houses sacred deity figures. This design concept shares striking similarities with the Devales found in at the medieval capital of Yapahuva.

Varaka Velandhu Vihare – The Vihare where the breadfruit was eaten.

A merchant from the city offered breadfruit as alms(offering) to arhats(Buddhist saints). After they had eaten their share they went their way, after which four more arhats took their places. They too had their share and three of them left but one did not. He sat some distance away and after receiving the jackfruit he showed a path and commanded the merchant to follow. The merchant entered to the cave and saw it was full of Silver.

This is the vein of Silver that provided King Dutu Gemunu the wherewithal to complete the Ruwanvelisaya Dagaba.
