In today's Gospel we are given the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. Yesterday Jesus spoke of being ready for His coming as a house owner might be for a thief. Today Jesus speaks of the folly of unpreparedness for Him, if He should come to us today, now.

As mentioned yesterday, it is up to us to live our lives reflecting God's love for us, if we are to be ready to answer His call at any time. Let it not be with us as it was with the foolish virgins, for we are never sure of what holds for us tomorrow. Let us as Christians use the wisdom of Christ’s teachings to guide us and be saved.

The Gospel today is about being ready for the Kingdom and Jesus tells His followers to be ready, always. Just like we have no knowledge of when a thief would break into our house, we don't know when the call of the Master will come.

There are bound to be friends and/ or relations of ours who have died unprepared deaths. Let us not tallow that to be the case with us. Let not the Master’s warning go unheeded and let Him not come to find us unprepared to answer His call.

So be ready today and each day heeding His call to love one another as He loved us.

සූදානම් නොවී මිය ගිය අපගේ මිතුරන් සහ/හෝ ඥාතීන් අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම සිටිය යුතුය. අප සම්බන්ධයෙන් එය එසේ වීමට ඉඩ නොදෙන්න. ස්වාමියාගේ අනතුරු ඇඟවීම නොසලකා නොහැරිය යුතු අතර, උන්වහන්සේගේ ඇමතුමට පිළිතුරු දීමට අපව සූදානම්ව සොයා ගැනීමට උන්වහන්සේට ඉඩ නොදිය යුතුය.

එබැවින් අද සහ සෑම දිනකම උන්වහන්සේ අපට ප්‍රේම කළ ආකාරයටම එකිනෙකාට ප්‍රේම කිරීමට උන්වහන්සේගේ ඇමතුමට අවනත වෙමු.

TODAY'S GOSPEL - 26TH AUGUST (Mt 23: 27-32)
අද සුවිශේෂය - අගෝස්තු 26 වනදා (මතෙව් 23: 27-32)

Jesus knew that the scribes and Pharisees were plotting to cause Him to be handed over to be crucified and warns them of their deeds. He reminds them that they are like whitewashed tombs which are white and glistening on the outside but contain the remains of the dead. He finally invites them to get on with it and finish what they were planning and plotting to do. Jesus is not bitter about what He is going to face for He knows that it is the will of His Father, but wants His Apostles and disciples to know that the Pharisees and scribes are not to be trusted with the interpretation of the Laws of God and Jesus used harsh words to emphasise His message.

Let us be warned too, that we could be like the scribes and Pharisees looking all holy on the outside but full of evil intent on the inside. Instead let the love of God work in us to be genuine in our attitude towards others. Pray today that we may sincerely work with love in our hearts and hold no malice.

ලේඛම්වරු සහ පරිසිවරු තමන්වහන්සේව කුරුසියේ ඇණ ගැසා මරා දැමීමට භාර දීමට කුමන්ත්‍රණය කරමින් සිටි බව ජේසුස් වහන්සේ දැන සිටි අතර ඔවුන්ගේ ක්‍රියාවන් ගැන උන්වහන්සේ ඔවුන්ට අනතුරු අඟවයි. ඒවා සුදු පැහැයෙන් හා පිටතින් දිලිසෙන නමුත් මළවුන්ගේ භශමාවශේෂ අඩංගු සුදු පැහැති සොහොන් ගෙවල් වැනි බව ඔහු ඔවුන්ට මතක් කර දෙයි. අවසානයේ ඔහු ඔවුන්ට ආරාධනා කරන්නේ ඔවුන් සැලසුම් කරමින් සිටි දේ සහ කුමන්ත්‍රණය කරමින් සිටි දේ අවසන් කරන ලෙසයි. යේසුස් වහන්සේ මුහුණ දීමට යන දේ ගැන කටුක නොවන බැවින් එය තම පියාණන්ගේ කැමැත්ත බව ඔහු දන්නා නමුත්, පරිසිවරුන් සහ ලියන්නන් දෙවියන් වහන්සේගේ නීති අර්ථ නිරූපණය කෙරෙහි විශ්වාස නොකළ යුතු බව ඔහුගේ ප්‍රේරිතයන් සහ ගෝලයන් දැන ගැනීමට අවශ්‍ය වන අතර යේසුස් වහන්සේ තම පණිවිඩය අවධාරණය කිරීමට රළු වචන භාවිතා කළේය.

අපටත් අනතුරු අඟවා ගනිමු, පිටතින් ශුද්ධ ලෙස පෙනෙන නමුත් ඇතුළතින් නපුරු චේතනාවෙන් පිරී ඇති ලියන්නන් සහ පරිසිවරුන් මෙන් අපටත් විය හැකිය. ඒ වෙනුවට අන් අය කෙරෙහි අපගේ ආකල්පය තුළ අව්‍යාජ වීමට දෙවියන් වහන්සේගේ ප්‍රේමය අප තුළ ක්‍රියාත්මක වේවා. අපගේ හදවත් තුළ අවංකව ප්‍රේමයෙන් වැඩ කිරීමට සහ කිසිදු ද්වේෂයක් තබා ගැනීමට අපට හැකි වන ලෙස අදම යාච්ඤා කරන්න.

In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus continues His condemnation of the Pharisees for their hypocrisy and for their insistence on the unimportant exterior while ignoring the important interior or in other words, their viewing of the laws of God from an earthly point of view and being blind to the spiritual, for their concern about the detail of the tithe (the mint and dill and cu**in) and neglecting the practice of weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy and good faith!

But, before we judge the Pharisees of Jesus’ time or anyone in authority in our society at present, let us be sure that we are not like the Pharisees being blind guides. Let us first ensure that we ourselves are following Jesus’ teachings on loving not only our neighbour but our enemy also. In following His teachings, let us have a blessed day.

නමුත්, ජේසුස් වහන්සේගේ කාලයේ පරිසිවරුන් හෝ වර්තමානයේ අපගේ සමාජයේ බලවත් ඇති ඕනෑම අයෙකු විනිශ්චය කිරීමට පෙර, අපි පරිසිවරුන් මෙන් අන්ධ මාර්ගෝපදේශකයින් නොවන බවට වග බලා ගනිමු. අපගේ අසල්වැසියාට පමණක් නොව අපගේ සතුරාටද ප්‍රේම කිරීම පිළිබඳ ජේසුස් වහන්සේගේ ඉගැන්වීම් අනුගමනය කරන බව පළමුව සහතික කර ගනිමු. උන්වහන්සේගේ ඉගැන්වීම් අනුගමනය කිරීම තුල, අපට ආශීර්වාද ලත් දවසක් අත් වේවා.

Today the Church celebrates the feast of St. Bartholomew (aka Nathaniel), Apostle. Obviously, Jesus appreciated the uncomplicated, sincere nature of Nathaniel (Bartholomew) when He said of him "'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is no deception."

Just as Jesus appreciated the non-deceptive Nathaniel, He appreciates sincerity in all of us and just as He knew of Nathaniel, He knows of us too. Also note that Jesus was not angered by Nathaniel's expression about Nazareth which seems to belittle Jesus Himself, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" asks Nathaniel.

Let us be frank and honest in our dealings today, but not express our frank and honest feelings in anger, rather appreciate such qualities in others.

"නාසරෙතයෙන් යහපත් දෙයක් පැමිණිය හැකිද?" යනුවෙන් නාසරෙත් ගැන නතානියෙල්ගේ ප්‍රකාශයෙන් ජේසුස් වහන්සේව පහත් කොට සැළකූ ලෙස සිතිය හැලකි වුවද. යේසුස් වහන්සේ කෝපයට පත් නොවූ බව සලකන්න.

අපිද අපගේ කටයුතුවලදී අද අව්‍යාජ හා අවංක වෙමු. නමුත් අපගේ අව්‍යාජ හා අවංක හැඟීම් කෝපයෙන් ප්‍රකාශ නොකර, අන් අය තුළ එවැනි ගුණාංග අගය කරමු.

The Universal Church celebrates today, Mary, the Mother of God who was crowned Queen of heaven and earth. God chose a Virgin through whom He would send His Son to the world and that virgin, Mary, receiving the joyful message of God said the most powerful 'Yes' ever said on earth. When she visited her cousin Elizabeth, Mary, the new Eve, who was obedient to the divine word is recognised by Elizabeth, as the Holy Mother of God.

She who received the Word of God with joy, remained with her Son, our Saviour till the end and was given to us at the foot of the Cross as the Mother of all faithful.

When God's plan for each of us is revealed, it is up to us to say yes with joy and for that we have the best example in the mother of Jesus, our heavenly Queen. May you discern the plan God has for yourself today and readily accept it so God can work His plan and may our Blessed Mother in Heaven intercede for you in your efforts to do that.

The Pharisees considered themselves the interpreters and guardians of the Law but excused themselves from observing the law. And why would they question Jesus except to test Him and discredit Him in the eyes of the ordinary Jews who had stopped following the Pharisees. When one such lawyer asks what that the greatest commandment is, Jesus being the Son of God, the Son of Love, tells them to love God with all their hearts, souls and minds and love their neighbour as themselves. Then He adds "𝑂𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑡𝑤𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝐿𝑎𝑤, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑒𝑡𝑠 𝑡𝑜𝑜." This last sentence was to remind them that God is the God of love and that the Love of God cannot exist unless it is given expression in the love of the neighbour.

පරිසිවරු තමන් නීතියේ පරිවර්තකයන් සහ භාරකරුවන් ලෙස සැලකූ නමුත් නීතිය පිළිපැදීමෙන් තමන්ව නිදහස් කරගෙන සිටියෝය. පරිසිවරුන් අනුගමනය කිරීම නවතා සිටි සාමාන්‍ය යුදෙව් ජනයා ඉදිරියේ උන්වහන්සේව පරීක්ෂා කර අපකීර්තියට පත් කිරීමට හැර ඔවුන් ජේසුස් වහන්සේගන් ප්‍රශ්න කළේ කුමකටද? එවැනි නීතිඥයෙකු ඇසූ ප්‍රශ්නය වූයේ, ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨතම ආඥාව කුමක්දැයි යන්නයි. එවිට ජේසුස් වහන්සේ, දෙවියන් වහන්සේගේ පුත්‍රයා නැතහොත් ප්‍රේමයේ පුත්‍රයා ලෙස ඔවුන්ට පවසන්නේ දෙවියන් වහන්සේට ඔවුන්ගේ මුළු හදවතින්ම, ආත්මයෙන් සහ මනසින් ප්‍රේම කරන ලෙසත්, තම අසල්වැසියාට තමන්ට මෙන් ප්‍රේම කරන ලෙසත්ය. ඉන්පසු උන්වහන්සේ "මුළු ව්‍යවස්ථාවලියත් දිවැසාවලියත් රඳා ඇත්තේ මේ ආඥා දෙක මතය" යනුවෙන්ද පැවසීය. දෙවියන් වහන්සේ, ප්‍රේමයේ දෙවියන් වහන්සේ බවත්, අසල්වැසියාට ඇති ප්‍රේමය තුළින් එය ප්‍රකාශ නොකළහොත් දෙවියන් වහන්සේගේ ප්‍රේමය පැවතිය නොහැකි බව මතක් කර දීම සඳහා මෙම අවසාන වාක්‍යය ඔවුන්ට පැවසීය.

ඔබට ප්‍රේමයෙන් පිරුණු දිනයක් වේවා.

Jesus reveals something about the nature of God in today's parable, about the king who gave a wedding feast explaining God's desire to share His life with us for eternity, as was His desire before man sinned. God’s nature is to share His love even to the extent of sharing His only begotten Son.

But we must be worthy of the invitation. The Israelites to whom the message was given did not remain faithful all the time and hence prophets were sent but they were not heeded. Jesus came but only a few accepted His teaching. We are now His followers, but let us ask ourselves, what kind of followers are we? Are we the ones who are invited and do not go to the King's feast or are we the ones without the garment?

Let us, as the Lord's invitees, prepare and be ready to be at the His feast today, clothed in the garment of love for others, by living as Jesus invites us to live and may your desire to share the joy of His kingdom never cease.

මිනිසා පව් කිරීමට පෙර සිට දෙවියන්වහන්සේගේ කැමැත්ත වූයේ සදාකාලිකවම අප සමඟ තම ජීවිතය බෙදා ගැනීමට වූ අතර දෙවියන් වහන්සේගේ කැමැත්ත පිළිබිඹු කිරීමට විවාහ මංගල්‍යයක් පැවැත්වූ රජ කෙනෙක් පිළිබඳ අද දින උපමාවෙන් දෙවියන් වහන්සේගේ ස්වභාවය ගැන ජේසුස් වහන්සේ යමක් හෙළි කරන සේක. දෙවියන් වහන්සේගේ ස්වභාවය නම්, උන්වහන්සේගේ ඒකජාතක පුත්‍රයා එවීමට තරම් උන්වහන්සේගේ ප්‍රේමය බෙදා ගැනීමයි.

නමුත් අපි ආරාධනයට සුදුසු විය යුතුය. පණිවිඩය ලබා දුන් ඊශ්‍රායෙල්වරුන් සෑම විටම විශ්වාසවන්තව නොසිටි අතර එබැවින් අනාගතවක්තෘවරුන් යවන ලද නමුත් ඔවුන්ට අවනත නොවීය. ජේසුස් වහන්සේ පැමිණි නමුත් උන්වහන්සේගේ ඉගැන්වීම් පිළිගත්තේ ස්වල්ප දෙනෙක් පමණි. අපි දැන් උන්වහන්සේගේ අනුගාමිකයන් වෙමු. නමුත් අපි කෙබඳු අනුගාමිකයන්දැයි අපෙන්ම අසාගනිමු.. ආරාධනා කරන රජුගේ මංගල්‍යයට නොයන අයද අපි, නැතහොත් අපි මංගල්‍ය වස්ත්‍රය නොමැතිව සිටින අයද?

ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ ආරාධිතයන් ලෙස, ජේසුස් වහන්සේ අපට ආරාධනා කරන පරිදි ජීවත් වීමෙන් එනම් අන් අය කෙරෙහි ප්‍රේමයේ වස්ත්‍රයෙන් සැරසී, අද උන්වහන්සේගේ මංගල්‍යයට සහභාගී වීමට සූදානම්ම් වෙමු. උන්වහන්සේගේ රාජ්‍යයේ ප්‍රීතිය බෙදා ගැනීමට ඔබගේ ආශාව කිසිදා නතර නොවේවා.

Today we are given the parable of the landowner who hires servants at different times but pays them equal wages. This parable should not be taken as one to explain justice and fair play but was taught by Jesus for us to learn of God's generosity.

Whether one is a Christian by birth (the Jews thought of themselves as God's people and therefore entitled to salvation as a birthright) or came to love Him yesterday, we are the same before God. As a child of God, in His Kingdom there will be no differentiation of status by the length of time of our faith but rather the measure will be the love shown to His people while on earth.

Be generous today with what is given by God to you and you will find His reward and joy in Heaven.

කෙනෙකු උපතින් කිතුනුවකු වුවද (යුදෙව් ජනතාව සිතුවේ තමන් දෙවියන් වහන්සේගේ ජනතාව බැවින් ජන්ම‍යෙන් ලද අයිතියක් ලෙස ගැලවීමට හිමිකම් ඇති බවයි) නැතහොත් ඊයේ ක්‍රිස්තුස් වහන්සේට ප්‍රේම කිරීමට පටන් ගත්ත්ද, අපි දෙවියන් වහන්සේ ඉදිරියෙහි එක හා සමානවේ. දෙවියන් වහන්සේගේ දරුවෙකු ලෙස, උන්වහසේගේ රාජ්‍යයේ අපගේ ඇදහිල්ලේ කාලය අනුව තත්ත්‍වයේ වෙනසක් සිදු නොවනු ඇත, නමුත් මිනුම වන්නේ මෙලොව සිටියදී උන්වහන්සේගේ ජනතාවට දක්වන ප්‍රේමයයි.

දෙවියන් වහන්සේ ඔබට දෙන දෙයින් අද ත්‍යාගශීලී වන්න, එවිට ඔබට ස්වර්ගයේ විපාකය සහ ප්‍රීතිය ලැබෙනු ඇත.
