“A New Chapter Begins: Lay Dominican First Vows Made at Mudukatuwa in the Diocese of Chilaw”
St. Dominic said, “Have charity, guard humility, and make your treasure out of voluntary poverty.”
On April 6, 2026, at the Church of Our Lady of Fatima, Mudukatuwa, Sri Lanka, the first-ever gathering of Lay Dominicans—23 faithful men and women—made their first vows to live the Dominican charism. Three members from the community of St. Catherine of Siena in Kandy and twenty from the community Our Lady of Fatima in Mudukatuwa stepped forward after a year of formation under their spiritual director, Rev. Fr. Asanka Melroy, OP. Guided by the Rule of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic, they committed themselves to the four pillars of Dominican life: prayer, study, community, and preaching.
As the Rule states: "Four Pillars of Dominican Life - Prayer, Study, Community and Preaching inspired by the example of St. Dominic said to be " talking to God or talking about God ". With hearts on fire for Veritas and Truth, they now dedicate themselves to the salvation of their own souls and the souls of others, bringing the Gospel into other communities.
The celebration was blessed by the presence of the Superior of the Dominican Friars in Sri Lanka, Rev. Fr. Asanka Melroy, OP, together with Rev. Fr. Jayalath Balagalla, OP, Rev. Fr. Sandy Cornel Alerta, OP, and Rev. Fr. Ian Joeffrey G. Melendres, OP. Dominican fathers, Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, and Dominican Sisters of Malta were also present. Many from the Diocese of Chilaw joined the celebration as well. As St. Dominic left us: “I have exhorted you by word and example. Now, my children, do the same.”
As they started their new chapter, let us open our hearts in prayer for the Lay Dominicans—especially those in Mudukatuwa and throughout Sri Lanka—that they may grow deeper in Christ, dedicate their lives to building God’s Kingdom each day, and commit themselves fraternally to St. Dominic in bringing the Word of Truth to others.
St. Dominic, pray for us!
St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us!
