The diocese of Chilaw encompasses 801 square miles of Puttalam District, serving a population of more than 300,000 Catholics. Currently, there are 50 parishes/missions, over 150 active and retired priests. His Lordship Bishop Valence Mendis was installed as the third Bishop of the Diocese of Chilaw on the 28th of October 2006.
