𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐁𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐒𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬

Our Lady of Lourdes Church marked a special occasion on August 23, 2026, with the blessing and inauguration of two new side shrines created for prayer and Marian devotion.

​Rt. Rev. Dr. Jude Nishantha Silva, Bishop of Badulla, presided over the dedication of the shrine spaces, which are dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Mount Carmel. As part of the ceremony, an authentic relic stone from the original Grotto of Lourdes was installed alongside the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes for veneration by the faithful.

𝐒𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐋𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡, 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐚

Fifty-seven children of Our Lady of Lourdes Church received the Sacrament of Confirmation on August 23, 2026.

​Rt. Rev. Dr. Jude Nishantha Silva, Bishop of Badulla, presided over the service and conferred the sacrament, strengthening the candidates with the gifts of the Holy Spirit to act as witnesses of the Gospel.

​The ceremony followed months of spiritual preparation guided by the Apostolic Carmel Sisters and catechism teachers. Parishioners gathered to support the candidates as they reaffirmed their baptismal promises and renewed their commitment to the Church.

The recent opening and consecration of St. Carlo Acutis Church at 17th Mile Post, Buttala, by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Jude Nishantha Silva, Bishop of Badulla, marks a profound spiritual milestone for the region. Constructed to fulfill the pastoral needs of the local community, this new sanctuary serves as a quiet haven of prayer and a vital central hub for youth across the Diocese of Badulla to seek guidance and inspiration from this contemporary young saint.

​The completion of the church stands as a testament to interfaith unity, made possible through the collective support and goodwill of the entire village. Though St. Carlo Acutis may be a new figure to some residents, the sanctuary remains a house of God open to all, inviting every visitor toward peace, faith, and the message of Christ. Adding to its spiritual significance, the church permanently enshrines a first-class relic of St. Carlo Acutis for public veneration.

​This historic project reflects the dedicated effort of the Buttala parish leadership over the years. Particular recognition belongs to former parish priest Rev. Fr. Rajeewan, under whose visionary guidance the initiative was launched, and current parish priest Rev. Fr. Bernard Costa, who steadfastly carried the vision through to its completion.

The church was solemnly blessed and opened today, August 22, 2026 — on the Feast Day of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary — by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Jude Nishantha Silva, Bishop of Badulla.
