West Pokot Rises among the First Counties in Kenya to Develop a County-Led Agroecology Framework
The West Pokot Agroecology Implementation Inception Meeting that happened on 22nd and 23rd April marked a powerful milestone for West Pokot County, bringing together government, civil society, and faith-based partners in a shared commitment to transform food systems and restore pastoral rangeland landscapes. With support from BIBA and Heinrich Böll Stiftung, the gathering united passionate actors including Pastoral Communities Empowerment Programme (PACEP), SIKOM, DECLARES, CABE, TEDDO, SHEPHARD, Vision Development CBOs, Dini ya Mafuta Pole ya Africa, and Anglican Development Services (ADS), in Partnership with the West Pokot County Department of Agriculture and Livestock and community farmer groups. As one of the first counties in Kenya to champion agroecology, West Pokot is boldly stepping forward to demonstrate that Indigenous knowledge, county and community leadership, and ecological farming can shape a resilient, food-secure, and climate-ready future.

Restoring Hope on the Rangelands – Chepareria, West Pokot County
PACEP was honored to join partners including the University of Nairobi, VI Agroforestry , County departments of Agriculture, Livestock & Water, NDMA, the Kipkomo Sub-County, DCC, and International Devwlopment Research Center as the funder for a field visit in Chepareria.
The visit highlighted the powerful impact of community-led rangeland restoration under the Restore4More and include2restore initiatives. Through strong partnerships, communities are reclaiming degraded land—now seeing healthier grass cover, growing trees, and improved soils.
Beyond the land, livelihoods are improving. Nutrition gardens are boosting food diversity, while agroecology and value addition are strengthening livestock value chains and household resilience.
Local voices shared renewed hope and pride, showing that when communities lead and partners support, real and lasting change is possible.

PACEP is happy to have been part of the team that participated in the exchange gathering held in Gotu, Northeastern Kenya, organized and supported by PAWANKA Fund.
It was a great privilege to share the importance of the indigenous fruit seed Sikowo with partners from across Africa who were also attending the meeting. Moments like these remind us how valuable our indigenous knowledge is, and how much we can learn from one another.
PAWANKA Fund created a very supportive and inclusive environment through open discussions, making all partners feel heard, empowered, and appreciated. It was inspiring to see different communities come together, exchange ideas, and strengthen our collective efforts.
Together, we continue to promote indigenous knowledge, strengthen communities, and build a more resilient future
