*The Fasting That Pleases God*

_(Friday 20 February 2026. Readings: Isaiah 58:1-9, Ps. 51:3-6,18-19, Matthew 9:14-15)_

_*“Behold, on the day of your fast, you seek your pleasure and oppress all your workers. Behold, you fast only to quarrel, fight and hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice be heard on high.” (Isaiah 58:3-4)*_

John’s disciples asked Jesus: “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Could it be that Jesus’ disciples were secretly fasting? Recall that in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus instructed: “When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that men may not see your fasting but your Father who is in secret.” (Matthew 6:16-18)

On the other hand, Jesus’ disciples did not need to fast, since Jesus was still with them in the flesh. Do you continue to pray for something that you already have? Jesus asked, “Can the wedding guests mourn while the bridegroom is still with them?”

Today, we learn that if we must fast, our fasting must be necessary and purposeful. Avoid following the crowd. Your fasting should be between you and God. Am I fasting because it is fasting season (or because I see others fasting)? What exactly do I hope to achieve by my fasting? Don’t fast if you have no prayer intention (purpose). Fast for an end to kidnapping in our country, inflation, injustice, corruption, etc.

Secondly, ensure that you are only depriving yourself of those things that you have in abundance. For instance, in Nigeria, having one good meal daily is a luxury for many families. For such families, fasting from food during this season is entirely pointless. You cannot fast from something that was never available in the first place.

Thirdly, you cannot fast from something that you were never meant to have in the first place. For instance, you cannot fast from sinful habits such as stealing, lying, and immorality. We are supposed to die to our sinful habits, not pause for a while (in the name of Lent) and then resume again with more incredible velocity after Easter. Fast from something good (a necessary item) so that your fasting truly becomes a sacrifice offered to God.

Fourthly, if you choose to fast from food, do not let your hunger trigger anger or bitterness. In today’s first reading, we learn that quarrelling (fighting, revenge, acts of wickedness, etc.) nullifies our fasting. Other types of fasting (as mentioned by Isaiah in today’s first reading) which are pleasing to God, include: “To lose the bonds of wickedness, to let the oppressed go free, to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him” (Cf. Isaiah 58:6-7)

Fasting is not limited to skipping meals or avoiding meat. God takes no pleasure in seeing people go without food (Jesus fed multitudes with bread and fish twice). True fasting is showing kindness to oppressed people, providing shelter for the homeless and giving clothes to the naked. St. James says: “If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,’ and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that?” (James 2:15-16). Fasting is useless if no one is benefiting from it.

Let us pray: Show gracious favour, O Lord, we pray, to the works of penance we have begun, that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the bodily observances we undertake. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.

Ash Wednesday is the begining of the sacred journey of Lent that calls Christians to 40 days of prayer, fasting, repentance, and almsgiving, in imitation of Christ’s time in the wilderness.
As Naromoru Level 4 hospital Catholic staffs received ashes yesterday ,we are reminded of our human frailty and our call to conversion:
Echoing the message of Pope Leo XIV, we are exhorted to tame the mouth -to speak with charity, restraint, and truth allowing our words to build, heal, and glorify God.
May this Lenten season deepen our faith, discipline our desires, purify our speech, and renew our commitment to love, humility, and service.

*Lunch Inspiring Word*

*Theme: Prayer, Meditation, and Work are the Holy Trinity of Achievement."*

Beloved, We often fall into a tempting trap treating prayer and meditation as a comfortable escape from work.

Sometimes we pray passionately, then sit back, cross our fingers, and wait for divine magic to transform our lives. But this is not the rhythm of faith taught in the Bible. It is a recipe for spiritual and practical laziness.

The true life of faith is where spiritual effort fuels physical action. Prayer, meditation, and work do not compete. They go together. In fact, they must go together.

They form an essential, inseparable trinity that guides and empowers us to build the life we want. We must bond them together if we actually want a breakthrough.

Prayer and Meditation are the Strategy Room, Not the Resting Bench.

Imagine a CEO who holds a powerful, brainstorming strategy meeting (Prayer/Meditation) and then leaves the office, expecting the annual report to write itself. That is what we do when we pray for success and then refuse to work. Nothing happens.

The biblical pattern is clear: We pray to receive instruction, and not to be excused from action.

You do not pray always expecting a magic to happen. Sometimes You pray to know what to do.

When the people of Israel were trapped by the Red Sea, they were paralyzed with fear. Moses cried out to God, and God's answer was not to move the mountain but to move them.

The Lord said to Moses, 'Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward.'" (Exodus 14:15).

The prayer was the signal for the marching orders. God's power cleared the path as they moved their feet.

You meditate to gain focus. Meditation, or thoughtful reflection, clears the noise so you can hear the divine instruction and solidify your purpose. It is the mental preparation before the race begins.

Our Lord Jesus Christ was the ultimate man of prayer, yet He was also the ultimate worker. He didn't just stay on a mountaintop praying every day. He was constantly ministering, teaching, traveling, healing, and confronting injustice.

He gave us the powerful declaration of an active God and an active servant: Jesus answered them, 'My Father is working until now, and I am working." (John 5:17)

This statement is foundational. The Creator of the universe is not retired! And if the Father is working, His children should be reflecting that same dynamic energy.

Jesus's life was a perfect blend. There were long nights of prayer followed by demanding days of impactful work.

When He commissioned His disciples, He didn't tell them to stay and fast forever; He told them to "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations..." (Matthew 28:19), which is an absolute call to action.

We love the promise: "Ask, and it will be given to you." But we often forget the immediate next line, which brings us back to the necessity of effort: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." (Matthew 7:7)

Asking is the prayer. It is stating the desire.
Seeking is the work. It is putting in the effort, researching, trying new things, and walking the extra mile.

Then Knocking is the persistence. It is showing up at the opportunity's door until it opens.

Prayer opens the path, but seeking (work) is the journey we must take. We cannot expect God to magically drop a promotion, a skill, or a loving relationship into our laps if we are not actively seeking them out.

The bible strongly condemned laziness.The Apostle Paul was direct and uncompromising on this. He blasted those who are idle, hiding behind a pretense of spirituality.

He says "For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat." (2 Thessalonians 3:10).This is a powerful indictment against laziness.

God provides the seeds, the rain, and the soil but we must do the planting and harvesting. To live off the work of others while claiming to wait on God is disobedience.

James says "what does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?... Thus faith by itself, if it does not have work, is dead." (James 2:14, 17)

This is a wake-up call! Your belief, your prayers, and your convictions are only energized and proven real when you put them into action.

Prayer is the soul's inhale; work is the life's exhale. Both are essential for life.

Stop waiting for a "magic" moment. Your spiritual life is meant to be a preparation, not a vacation.

So do these:

1. Pray for a clear vision and divine guidance.
2. Meditate to receive instructions, meditate on your instructions and solidify your plan.

3. Work with diligence and conviction, knowing that your hands are God's hands in the world.

When you unite your spiritual life with your professional life, you stop hoping for a miracle and become one. Go forward, your instructions are clear! This is where many people today are making a lot mistakes. Wake up!!

Give me a very tender and devoted love for the Incarnate Word and his Blessed Mother, more like your own. I venerate you also as the Strength from God, because you are the giver of God's strength, consoler and comforter chosen to strengthen God's faithful and to teach them important truths. I ask for the grace of a special power of the will to strive for the holiness of life. Steady my resolutions, renew my courage, comfort and console me in the problems, trials, and sufferings of daily living, as you consoled our Saviour in His agony and Mary in her sorrows and Joseph in his trials.
