Christian Outreach - Luke 14:23 - “And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.’”

In this month’s newsletter, Rev. Dr. Ron Bogs writes about his and his wonderful wife, Gayle’s, time at the LST. In addition, one of our students, Dieudonne Manishimwe, shares his experience in the Christian Outreach course taught by Rev. Bogs, and also how he came to study at the LST, bringing his family along.

Rev. May and Tiina had a wonderful opportunity to attend the Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne (CTSFW) alumni reunion. No other 2006 graduates were present, but they were delighted to reconnect with Rev. Stephen Skov, their pastor after they married and while they lived in Santa Barbara, CA. Rev. May was working there as an architect during his two internships from the University of Cincinnati, OH. They had a wonderful time interacting with other alumni and CTSFW professors and discussing the work that Lutherans in Africa (LIA) does.

Among the many people they met were Boris Obare (Kenya) and Frank Mdindi (Tanzania). It was nice to have a conversation in Swahili and reminisce about shared memories and people they know in Africa.

While in Fort Wayne, they had many friendly talks with Peter Ventimiglia, a CTSFW student who just finished his first year. He will travel to Kenya soon to teach Greek at the Lutheran School of Theology (LST). He will travel with his wife and six children. Prayers appreciated on their behalf!

Last weekend’s LIA church visits took Rev. May to Immanuel LC in Washington, MO. He preached at three services and spoke about mission work during the Bible study hour. Tiina joined him for one of the services and also visited Trinity LC in New Haven, MO, where LIA Vice Chairman Rev. Andrew Preus shepherds his flock.

Rev. and Tiina May traveled to the USA for a month.

The church visits for Lutherans in Africa began with two services and a mission presentation at Our Redeemer LC in Dubuque, followed by a service at Saint Matthew LC in Sherrill, IA.

It was a joy to reconnect with Rev. May’s seminary classmate, Rev. Jesse Cearlock, who shepherds these two congregations. Members of his congregation, Mr. and Mrs. Uelner, kindly hosted the Mays, and Rev. and Mrs. Cearlock joined them for dinner, making for a wonderful time of fellowship.

Thank you, everyone in Our Redeemer and Saint Matthew, for the warm welcome and for your eager participation during the mission presentation!

The final course that students took before leaving for their break was the Introduction to Administration with Mr. Kevin Kariuki, the LST business manager, as their lecturer.

The purpose of the course was to prepare students to confidently carry out clerical, administrative, supervisory, and managerial tasks. Mr. Kariuki equipped them with several office management and organizational tools.

Director Rev. May stepped in to cover the Christian leadership and congregational constitutions parts of the course.

Students are enjoying their well-deserved break, but we can still look back on their time at the LST.

In this newsletter, you hear from Dr. Schulz, our academic dean and professor of theology, about what ethics is and how a class like this works at the Lutheran School of Theology.

You’ll also get to know one of our stellar students, Elvis Ongosi.

The students are now on break and have traveled to visit their families and congregations at home. It happened that all pastors serving at the LST chapel also traveled to serve other congregations last Sunday. Therefore, a group of congregants from the LST drove to Ngong Town to attend a Lutheran service there.

Pastor Frank Koyo and his St. Luke congregation warmly welcomed the visitors. During the Bible study hour, the hearers received a hearty dose of Catechism, learning Ombi la Nne, “Utupe leo riziki yetu” [The Fourth Petition, “Give us this day our daily bread”]. The sermon led them to the road to Emmaus and to hear Peter preach repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins at Pentecost.

After the service and introductions, the members of St. Luke served tea, and people enjoyed a pleasant time of fellowship before heading home.

May God continue to bless His work through St. Luke ELCK in Ngong Town!

The annual general meeting for Lutherans in Africa was held at the LST earlier this week. Board members and observers gathered to reflect on the previous year and to discuss and deliberate on plans to faithfully serve the Church in Africa in the years ahead.

Thank you to the bishops and other church leaders for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend in person, as well as those who attended online.

May the Lord continue to lead His work through Lutherans in Africa!

On Saturday, the Christian Outreach class headed out to a nearby town to put into practice what they had learned. Before leaving, they prayed that the Holy Spirit would open the hearts and minds of those they would meet.

Dr. Bogs recounts, “All the people we spoke with were very friendly and courteous. One of the students confidently took the lead, introduced us, and began sharing about Jesus, His grace, and the gifts He gives. We invited them all to Sunday service.”

‭‭Mark‬ ‭16‬:‭15‬
“And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.”

‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭3‬:‭15‬
“but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,”
