7 Things Catholics Should Stop Doing During Holy Mass
The Holy Mass is the highest form of worship in the Catholic Church. It is the re-presentation of Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary, and each time we attend, we are standing on holy ground. Sadly, many Catholics lose sight of this reality and fall into habits that distract from the sacredness of the liturgy. Here are seven things Catholics should stop doing during Mass to help us return to true reverence.
1. Arriving Late and Leaving Early
Coming late means missing essential parts of the Mass—especially the Penitential Act and the readings that prepare our hearts. Leaving before the final blessing is like walking out of a banquet before the host gives thanks. The Mass is a complete prayer; we should stay from the beginning to the end.
2. Using Phones for Non-Spiritual Purposes
Checking social media, texting, or browsing during Mass is disrespectful. The Lord gives us one hour to focus on Him fully; phones should only be used for following the readings, if necessary, or emergencies.
3. Talking or Whispering Unnecessarily
Mass is not a social gathering. Conversations, gossip, or even casual chatting in the pews take away from the silence and reverence needed for prayer. Silence helps prepare our hearts to listen to God.
4. Improper Dressing
Our external appearance reflects our inner reverence. Mass is not the time for flashy or revealing clothing. While God looks at the heart, how we dress should honor His presence in the Eucharist and avoid distracting others.
5. Skipping Responses and Postures
The Mass is not a show—it’s a participation. Staying silent when the congregation responds or ignoring gestures like kneeling and standing shows indifference. Full participation allows us to enter deeply into the mystery being celebrated.
6. Eating, Drinking, or Chewing Gum
The Eucharist is sacred food. The Church requires at least a one-hour fast before receiving Communion (except for water and medicine). Chewing gum or snacking during Mass shows a lack of respect for the sacred mystery.
7. Receiving the Eucharist Carelessly
The Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. We should receive Him only when in a state of grace (after confession if needed), approach reverently, and never treat Communion casually.
Final Thought
The Holy Mass is heaven on earth. Every gesture, word, and silence matters. By avoiding these seven habits, we can restore reverence, grow in holiness, and truly honor Jesus Christ who comes to us in the Eucharist.
🙏 Let us ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to help us approach the Holy Mass with purity, humility, and love.
