"We have a moral and spiritual duty to ensure that the full truth about what happened comes to light. The death of a pastor cannot be shrouded in silence or uncertainty. Truth is an act of justice towards Osório, towards his people, and towards our mission itself."
Very Rev. James Bhola Lengarin, IMC
Superior General of Consolata Missionaries

The Catholic Church in Mozambique and the Consolata Missionaries are mourning the sudden death of Rt. Rev. Osório Citora Afonso, IMC, Bishop of the Diocese of Quelimane and Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, which occurred today.

The sad news was communicated by Archbishop Inácio Saúre, President of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, in a message addressed to the Regional Superior of the Consolata Missionaries in Mozambique, Fr. Cassiano Kalima, IMC. Archbishop Saúre reported that Bishop Afonso was found lifeless in a corridor of the episcopal residence in Quelimane.

Responding to the news, Fr. Kalima called on the faithful to unite in prayer for the repose of the bishop's soul, his family, the Consolata Missionaries, and the entire Catholic Church in Mozambique. “Through the intercession of Our Lady of Consolata and Saint Joseph Allamano, may he rest in peace,” he prayed.

Bishop Osório Citora Afonso, 54, was widely regarded as one of the rising leaders of the Catholic Church in Mozambique. Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Maputo in September 2023, he received episcopal ordination on January 28, 2024. In 2025, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Quelimane, entrusting him with the pastoral leadership of the diocese. On April 10, 2026, he was further appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, reflecting the confidence the Church had in his leadership and pastoral abilities.

A dedicated Consolata Missionary, Bishop Afonso also served as Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique and was a valued supporter of The Seed Magazine and many other publications of the Consolata Missionaries . Known for his humility, intellectual depth, and missionary zeal, he combined scholarly excellence with a deep commitment to evangelization and pastoral service.

Born on May 6, 1972, in Ribaue, Nampula Province, Mozambique, Bishop Afonso studied at the Cristo-Rei Preparatory Seminary in Matola before pursuing Philosophy at the Santo Agostinho Major Seminary and Theology at the Institut Saint-Eugène de Mazenod in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. He made his perpetual profession as a Consolata Missionary in 2001 and was ordained a priest on November 3, 2002.

His priestly ministry took him across Africa and Europe in various capacities, including parish ministry, seminary formation, missionary leadership, and service at the Dicastery for Evangelization in Rome. He earned a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and pursued further biblical studies in Jerusalem, establishing himself as a respected Scripture scholar and missionary pastor.

The passing of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso marks a profound loss for the Church in Mozambique, the Consolata Missionaries, and all who were inspired by his gentle spirit, dedication to the Gospel, and unwavering commitment to the mission of Christ.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

After many years of missionary presence, the Consolata Missionaries officially handed over Materi Parish to the Diocese of Meru in a celebration filled with faith, gratitude, and hope.

The Eucharistic celebration brought together priests, sisters, schools, community leaders, and hundreds of faithful who gathered to witness this historic moment for the Materi community.

Through songs, traditional Tharaka dances, and meaningful gestures, the community expressed its gratitude to the missionaries who walked alongside the people for decades, promoting faith, education, and human development.

The mission continues.
And the legacy planted in Materi will live on through its people and future generations.

🎉 Father Martinelli turns 85 🎉

Yesterday at the Regional House in Kenya, we joyfully celebrated the 85th birthday of Father Martinelli, a missionary whose life has been marked by service, fraternity, and unwavering dedication to the Gospel.

Just as Aaron and Hur held up the hands of Moses, his fellow missionaries stood beside him, reminding him that he is deeply loved, appreciated, and never alone in the journey of life and mission.

Thank you, Father Martinelli, for your years of faithful service, your availability, and your missionary spirit that continues to inspire so many.

May God continue to bless you with peace, joy, and strength.
Happy 85th Birthday, Padre Martinelli! 🙏✨

🙏 A truly blessed day at the Shrine of Mary Help of Christians (Upperhill). Today, we witnessed two young men answer the Lord's call: a Salesian brother and a Consolata brother, now forever united in the priesthood.

Congratulations to Fr. Michael Makonnen, SDB, and Fr. Michael Juma, IMC! May the Lord guide their missionary and youth ministry steps. 📖⛪
