The Catholic Church in Mozambique and the Consolata Missionaries are mourning the sudden death of Rt. Rev. Osório Citora Afonso, IMC, Bishop of the Diocese of Quelimane and Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, which occurred today.
The sad news was communicated by Archbishop Inácio Saúre, President of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, in a message addressed to the Regional Superior of the Consolata Missionaries in Mozambique, Fr. Cassiano Kalima, IMC. Archbishop Saúre reported that Bishop Afonso was found lifeless in a corridor of the episcopal residence in Quelimane.
Responding to the news, Fr. Kalima called on the faithful to unite in prayer for the repose of the bishop's soul, his family, the Consolata Missionaries, and the entire Catholic Church in Mozambique. “Through the intercession of Our Lady of Consolata and Saint Joseph Allamano, may he rest in peace,” he prayed.

Bishop Osório Citora Afonso, 54, was widely regarded as one of the rising leaders of the Catholic Church in Mozambique. Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Maputo in September 2023, he received episcopal ordination on January 28, 2024. On April 10, 2026, he was further appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, reflecting the confidence the Church had in his leadership and pastoral abilities.
A dedicated Consolata Missionary, Bishop Afonso also served as Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique and was a valued supporter of The Seed Magazine and many other publications of the Consolata Missionaries . Known for his humility, intellectual depth, and missionary zeal, he combined scholarly excellence with a deep commitment to evangelization and pastoral service.
Born on May 6, 1972, in Ribaue, Nampula Province, Mozambique, Bishop Afonso studied at the Cristo-Rei Preparatory Seminary in Matola before pursuing Philosophy at the Santo Agostinho Major Seminary and Theology at the Institut Saint-Eugène de Mazenod in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. He earned a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and pursued further biblical studies in Jerusalem, establishing himself as a respected Scripture scholar and missionary pastor.
The passing of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso marks a profound loss for the Church in Mozambique, the Consolata Missionaries, and all who were inspired by his gentle spirit, dedication to the Gospel, and unwavering commitment to the mission of Christ.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
