“They sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.”

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Hosea (Hosea 8:4—7, 11—13)

Thus says the Lord: Israel made kings, but not through me. They set up princes, but without my knowledge. With their silver and gold they made idols for their own destruction. I have spurned your calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will it be till they are pure in Israel? A workman made it; it is not God. The calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces. For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads, it shall yield no meal; if it were to yield, aliens would devour it. Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning, they have become to him altars for sinning. Were I to write for him my laws by ten thousands, they would be regarded as a strange thing. They love sacrifice; they sacrifice flesh and eat it; but the Lord has no delight in them. Now he will remember their iniquity, and punish their sins; they shall return to Egypt.

Bwana asema hivi: Wana wa Israeli wamesimamisha wafalme, lakini si kwa shauri langu; wamejifanyia wakuu, lakini nilikuwa sina habari; kwa fedha yao na dhahabu yao wamejifanyia sanamu za miungu. Siku zile: Watu wengi waliamini na wakamwongokea Bwana. Habari ya mambo hayo ikavuma hata masikioni mwa Kanisa la Yerusalemu, wakamtuma Barnaba aende Antiokia. Naye alipofika huko na kuiona neema ya Mungu, alifurahi, na akawahimiza wote wamshikilie Bwana k**a walivyokusudia mioyoni mwao, kwa maana alikuwa mtu mwema, mwenye kujaa Roho Mtakatifu na imani. Idadi kubwa ya watu ikaongezeka kwa Bwana. Barnaba akaenda Tarso kumtafuta Sauli, na alipomkuta, akampeleka Antiokia. Walipofanya ibada kwa Bwana na kufunga, Roho Mtakatifu alisema, "Niwekeeni tayari Barnaba na Sauli kwa kazi niliyowaitia." Hapo wakafunga na kusali, wakawawekea mikono na kuwaaga waende.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 11:21b—26; 13, 1—3)

In those days: A great number that believed turned to the Lord. News of this came to the ears of the Church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose; for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a large company was added to the Lord. So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the Church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians. Now in the Church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Ninyi ni kizazi kiteule, ukuhani wa kifalme, taifa takatifu, watu walo mali ya Mungu, mpate kutangaza matendo nakuu ya yule allyewaita.

Somo katika barua ya kwanza ya Mtakatifu Petro

Ndugu zangu: K**a watoto wachanga waliozaliwa, mlamani maziwa halisi ya kirolho, mpate kukua katika wokovu, maana mmeonja jinsi Bwana alivyo mwema. Mjongeeni yeye aliye jiwe lenye uzima lililokataliwa na wanadamu, lakini ni teule azizi kwa Mungu. “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you. ”

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Peter (1 Peter 2:2—5, 9—12)

Beloved: Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation; for you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by men but in God’s sight chosen and precious; and like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were no people but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I beg you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh that wage war against your soul. Maintain good conduct among the Gentiles, so that in case they speak against you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
