YUDA 17, 20b—25

Basi wakamjibu Yesu, "Hatujui." Yesu akawaambia, *Wala mimi siwaambii ninafanya hayo kwa mamlaka gani."

FIRST READING

“God is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory.”

A reading from the Letter of Saint Jude (Jude 17:20b—25)

You must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. Build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God; wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And convince some, who doubt; save some, by snatching them out of the fire; on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God, our Saviour through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF THE LORD... THANKS BE TO GOD

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
PSALM 63:2, 3—4, 5—6 (R. 2b)

R/. For you my soul is thirsting, O Lord, my God.

O God, you are my God; at dawn I seek you;
for you my soul is thirsting.
For you my flesh is pining,
like a dry, weary land without water. R/.

I have come before you in the sanctuary,
to behold your strength and your glory.
Your loving mercy is better than life;
my lips will speak your praise. R/.

R/. For you my soul is thirsting, O Lord, my God.

I will bless you all my life;
in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul shall be filled as with a banquet;
with joyful lips, my mouth shall praise you. R/.

GOSPEL READING

“By what authority are you doing these things?”

† A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 11:27—33)

At that time: Jesus and the disciples came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, and they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” Jesus said to them, “I will ask you a question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men? Answer me.” And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But shall we say, ‘From men’?” — they were afraid of the people, for all held that John was a real prophet. So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

“You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you. ”

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Peter (1 Peter 2:2—5, 9—12)

Beloved: Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation; for you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by men but in God’s sight chosen and precious; and like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were no people but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I beg you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh that wage war against your soul. Maintain good conduct among the Gentiles, so that in case they speak against you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

At that time: As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great multitude, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; rise, he is calling you.” And throwing off his cloak he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Master, let me receive my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

FIRST READING

I commend you to God, who is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 20:28—38)

In those days: Paul said to the elders of the Church of Ephesus, “Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you guardians, to feed the Church of the Lord which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.”’ And when he had spoken thus, he knelt down and prayed with them all. And they all wept and embraced Paul and kissed him, sorrowing most of all because of the word he had spoken, that they should see his face no more. And they brought him to the ship.

who rides on the heavens,

Behold, he thunders his voice, his mighty voice.
Come, acknowledge the power of God. R/.

GOSPEL READING

May they be one, as we are one!

† A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (John 17:11b—19)

At that time: [Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and prayed, saying,] “Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not pray that you should take them out of the world, but that you should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth.”

📖📖17TH MAY MASS READINGS REFLECTIONS 📖📖

A THOUSAND HORIZONS- HOMILIES AND REFLECTIONS BY REV. FR. BEN KARANJA

ASCENSION SUNDAY HOMILY BY KOECH KITANGO 17TH MAY 2026

Readings : Acts 1:1-11

Psalm 47

Ephesians 1:17-23

Matthew 28:16-20
A high point in a relay race is the moment when one runner passes the baton to another. More races are won or lost at that moment than at any other point in the race. The Ascension of Jesus can be compared to the passing of the baton of God’s Kingdom to his disciples, entrusting them with the mission of continuing the work he began on earth.

Today we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ into Heaven. At first glance, one might imagine Jesus ascending like a rocket, going up, up, and away. Yet the accounts of Luke and Matthew, though told from different perspectives, reveal the same truth: Jesus is no longer physically present among us, yet he remains with us always. His Ascension is not a departure from the world, but an entrance into another dimension of life, free from the limitations of time and space. It does not signify his removal from earth, but rather his constant presence everywhere.

Luke begins by addressing Theophilus, referring to the earlier account he wrote about Jesus and his ministry. Theophilus may have been a particular individual, but the name also means “lover of God,” making the message relevant to all of us. We too are invited to be witnesses to the reality of the Resurrection and Ascension.

Luke tells us that Jesus appeared to his disciples for forty days after his Resurrection. In Scripture, forty often symbolizes a period of preparation for something new and significant. For forty days and nights, rain fell in Noah’s time to cleanse the earth of evil. Elijah journeyed for forty days to bring renewal of leadership to Israel. The Israelites wandered in the desert for forty years as God formed them into his chosen people. Jesus himself spent forty days in the wilderness preparing for his public ministry. Now, after the Resurrection, Jesus spends forty days preparing his disciples for their mission. In Jewish tradition, after forty days a disciple was considered qualified to speak on behalf of his teacher. Thus, Luke’s mention of forty signifies that the disciples are now ready to continue Christ’s mission.

At the end of the reading, after Jesus is taken up in a cloud, the disciples remain standing there, gazing into the sky. Perhaps they were wondering if and when he would return in the same way. But the angels tell them to stop looking upward and to get busy with their mission. Earlier, the disciples had asked Jesus when he would restore the kingdom to Israel. Jesus answered that it was not for them to know the times or seasons set by the Father. Their concern was not to speculate about dates and signs, but to carry out their mission.

Even today, many believers become overly preoccupied with predicting the end times and waiting for signs from heaven. They spend so much time “looking upward” that they neglect the mission entrusted to them. I remember attending a New Year’s Eve Mass as a seminarian in 1999. During the Mass, the priest sent me to the house to fetch something. On the way, I found several people who had come for Mass but remained outside the church. When I asked why, they told me they were waiting for a sign from heaven before entering. Rumors had spread that the world would end at the turn of the millennium and that Jesus was about to return. Such fears and speculations often distract people from living out the Gospel faithfully.

There is a story of a woman who saw a poorly dressed and hungry child playing in the street among filthy trash. Angered by the suffering she witnessed, she cried out to God, “Why do you allow such things to happen in the world you created? Why don’t you do something about it?” God replied, “I did do something about it — I created you.”

That is precisely the mission Jesus gives his disciples: to be his witnesses “in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” I remember a simple song we learned as children:

“I am happy today, so happy, in Jesus’ name I am happy, because he has taken my sins away…The day to be happy is now,
the place to be happy is here,
and the way to be happy
is to make someone happy
and to have a little heaven down here.”

In other words, the disciples are called not merely to wait for heaven, but to bring a little heaven down to earth through their witness, love, and service.

In the Gospel, Jesus meets his disciples in Galilee, the very place where his ministry began years earlier. They worshiped him, though some still doubted. This reminds us that within every Christian community people are at different stages of faith and understanding. Yet Jesus does not reject or condemn them for their doubts. Instead, he commissions them all.

Jesus declares that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him. Earlier, during the temptation in the desert, Satan had claimed he could give Jesus authority over all kingdoms if only he would worship him. Later, Pilate boasted of having authority to release or condemn Jesus. But now it becomes clear that true authority belongs to God alone. Satan and Pilate only imagined they possessed power; Jesus receives true authority from the Father.

Jesus then sends his disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations.” To make disciples means more than simply preaching. It means teaching people to know his words, obey his commandments, and imitate his way of love. It means forming people whose lives reflect Christ himself. Such work does not happen accidentally. It requires intentionality, sacrifice, courage, and a deep conviction that eternity is real.

Finally, Jesus gives his disciples a promise: “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” He does not promise an easy mission or a life free from hardship. He promises his presence. God made the same promise to Moses and Joshua as they led Israel. Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would be called Emmanuel, “God with us.” Jesus fulfills that promise perfectly. Though the Ascension may sound like departure, it is in fact the assurance of a deeper and more universal presence.

In the second reading, Saint Paul prays that believers may receive wisdom and understanding, realizing that although they live in the world, they are not meant to become too attached to it. Christians are pilgrims journeying toward their true home with God.

The sinking of the supposedly “unsinkable” Titanic led to the deaths of about fifteen hundred people. Tragically, a nearby ship that could have rescued all of them was off duty. In a similar way, many Christians today are spiritually “off duty.” The Ascension reminds us that Christ has passed the baton to us. We are not called to stand idle, gazing at the sky, but to live as active witnesses of the Gospel, bringing hope, love, justice, and compassion to the world until he comes again.

FIRST READING
ACTS 1:1—11

“As they were looking on, he was lifted up.”

The beginning of the Acts of the Apostles

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me, for John baptised with water, but before many days you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

SECOND READING
EPHESIANS 1:17—23

“He made him sit at his right hand in the heavenly places.”

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians

Brethren: May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power in us who believe, according to the working of his great might which he accomplished in Christ when he raised him from the dead and made him sit at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come; and he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the Church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL READING
MATTHEW 28:16—20

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

† The conclusion of the holy Gospel according to Matthew

At that time: The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and be- hold, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”

WAEFESO 1:17—23

Amemketisha kuume kwake mbinguni.
