Del Sueño a la Aventura: el viaje de los Scouts de San José a Mizan

Impulsados por un sueño común, el grupo de Scouts de San José de Muketuri tomó la iniciativa de financiar su viaje a Mizan vendiendo café y pulseras hechas por ellos. Gracias a su esfuerzo y determinación durante varias semanas, consiguieron recaudar el dinero suficiente para embarcarse en una aventura inolvidable.

El objetivo era que los jóvenes de Muketuri visitaran la misión de la MCSPA en Mizan Teferi y conocieran sus diversos apostolados. Entre ellos, el Programa de los Lions (para jóvenes de entre 12 y 18 años) y el Programa de los Filippos, que presta apoyo a niños en situación de calle.

La visita transcurrió muy animada, con actividades para romper el hielo, partidos amistosos de fútbol, una emotiva visita al proyecto de Santa Clara que acompaña a mujeres con secuelas de lepra y un espectacular paseo al río. El viaje también supuso un maravilloso intercambio de habilidades: los Scouts enseñaron a los jóvenes de Mizan a hacer pulseras artesanales y los jóvenes de Mizan enseñaron a los Scouts a jugar al ajedrez.

Al venir de las tierras altas, los Scouts quedaron impresionados por el exuberante paisaje; para muchos, era la primera vez que veían árboles de café, mango, naranja, aguacate y guayaba. ¡A muchos de ellos les pareció estar paseando por el paraíso!

Más tarde, visitamos la enorme plantación de café de Bebeka, un extenso terreno que abarca casi 10 000 hectáreas. Un momento especial también para muchos de los jóvenes, que tuvieron la oportunidad de ver árboles de cacao por primera vez.

A medida que el viaje llegaba a su fin, los jóvenes se reunieron para reflexionar y compartir sus impresiones.

Los Scouts, junto con algunos voluntarios mexicanos, representaron una obra de teatro centrada en la búsqueda de Dios y en cómo Su plan se va desarrollando constantemente en nuestras vidas. Nos recordó que, incluso cuando tropezamos ante la tentación a lo largo del camino, siempre podemos volver a Él, porque Él ya nos está esperando.

Estamos profundamente agradecidos a todas las personas cuyo apoyo ha hecho posible este viaje. Sin duda, estos jóvenes seguirán generando un cambio positivo, y esta experiencia dejará una huella imborrable en sus vidas.

From Dream to Adventure: St. Joseph’s Scouts’ Journey to Mizan

Driven by a shared dream, the Muketuri St. Joseph’s Scouts Group took the initiative to fund their own journey by preparing and selling coffee and handmade bracelets. Through their hard work and determination over several weeks, they raised enough money to embark on an unforgettable adventure.

The goal was for the Muketuri youth to visit the MCSPA mission at Mizan Teferi and experience its various outreach initiatives. These include the Lion Program (for youth aged 12 to 18 years) and the Filippos Program, which supports street children.

The days were filled with icebreakers, friendly football matches, a moving visit to the Santa Clara project for women living with leprosy, and a scenic walk to the river. The trip was also a wonderful exchange of skills: the Scouts taught the Mizan youth how to craft handmade bracelets, while the youth from Mizan taught the Scouts how to play chess.

Coming from the highlands, the youth were blown away by the lush landscape - for many, it was their very first time to see coffee, mango, orange, avocado and guava trees. For many of them, it felt like walking through paradise!

Later on, we visited the massive Bebeka Coffee Plantation, a sprawling site covering nearly 10,000 hectares. It was also a special moment for many of the young people, who had the chance to see cacao trees for the first time.

As the trip drew to a close, the youth gathered to reflect and share their impressions.

The Scouts alongside some Mexican volunteers, did a play centered on seeking God and how His plan is always unfolding in our lives. It reminded us that even when we stumble in temptation along our journey, we can always turn back to Him because He is already waiting for us.

We are deeply grateful to everyone whose support made this journey possible. Without a doubt, these young people will go on to create positive change, and this experience will leave a lasting mark on their lives.

Restaurando la esperanza: sanación del trauma y reconciliación en la Misión Ave María

Durante tres días, la Misión Ave María en Sudán del Sur se convirtió en un lugar de escucha, sanación, oración y esperanza renovada, cuando los supervivientes y los miembros de la comunidad afectados por la guerra, el desplazamiento y el conflicto se reunieron para participar en un taller de sanación del trauma y apoyo psicosocial.

El taller fue organizado por el P. Albert Salvans, MCSPA, junto con la fraternidad de la Misión Ave María, cuya colaboración, hospitalidad y compromiso contribuyeron al éxito del programa. La facilitadora fue Sheila Akinyi Otieno, directora ejecutiva del Compassionate Centre for Families (CFC) de Kisumu (Kenia), con el apoyo del equipo local de movilización, coordinación y traducción.

El primer día se centró en comprender el trauma y sus efectos en las emociones, los pensamientos, las relaciones, la salud física y el comportamiento. El segundo día, se invitó poco a poco a los participantes a compartir sus experiencias en un entorno seguro y confidencial.

Lo que sucedió a continuación fue profundamente conmovedor. Una participante, a la que llamaremos «Amina» para proteger su identidad, compartió la devastadora pérdida de tres de sus hijos, lo que la dejó solo con el bebé que llevaba junto a su pecho. Sabía quién creía que era el responsable y había estado pensando en acudir a un curandero tradicional para vengarse. Sin embargo, mientras hablaba de su dolor, rompió a llorar y se dio cuenta de que ya no podía soportar el odio que albergaba en su corazón. Decidió perdonar. Su decisión no borró lo ocurrido ni el dolor que sigue soportando; fue un paso personal para negarse a dejar que el odio definiera el resto de su vida.

Otra participante, a la que llamaremos «Zaitun», contó cómo ella y su hija habían sufrido violencia sexual y, posteriormente, habían tenido que afrontar graves consecuencias para su salud. Su situación se volvió tan difícil que se alejaron de la Iglesia y recurrieron a la prostitución para sobrevivir. Sin embargo, durante el taller, madre e hija volvieron a la Iglesia. Conmovidas hasta las lágrimas, expresaron su deseo de cambiar sus vidas y buscar atención médica. Su historia sirvió para recordar que, incluso tras un profundo sufrimiento, una persona puede empezar a buscar ayuda, dignidad y un nuevo rumbo.

Para la Misión Ave María, este taller es solo el comienzo. Con mayor apoyo, colaboración y compromiso, se pueden poner en marcha más iniciativas para llegar a las personas que siguen viviendo con las secuelas de la guerra, el desplazamiento y el trauma. Las necesidades son muchas: sanación, atención médica, apoyo psicológico, educación, reconciliación, recuperación económica, apoyo comunitario y, sobre todo, esperanza.

Este taller en la Misión Ave María ha sido el punto de partida. Con un apoyo y un compromiso continuos, ojalá este camino de sanación se repita, se expanda y se lleve a muchas más comunidades: una persona, una familia y una comunidad cada vez.

Restoring Hope: Trauma Healing and Reconciliation at Ave Maria Mission

For three days, Ave Maria Mission in South Sudan became a place of listening, healing, prayer and renewed hope as survivors and community members affected by war, displacement and conflict gathered for a Trauma Healing and Psychosocial Support Workshop.

The workshop was organized by Fr. Albert Salvans, MCSPA together with the Ave Maria Mission fraternity, whose collaboration, hospitality and commitment helped make the programme a success. It was facilitated by Sheila Akinyi Otieno, Executive Director of the Compassionate Centre for Families (CFC) in Kisumu, Kenya, with the support of the local mobilization, coordination and translation team.

The first day focused on understanding trauma and its effects on emotions, thoughts, relationships, physical health and behaviour. On the second day, participants were gradually invited to share their experiences in a safe and confidential environment.

What followed then was deeply moving. One participant, whom we will call “Amina” to protect her identity, shared the devastating loss of three of her children, leaving her with only the baby she was carrying at her breast. She knew the person she believed was responsible and had been considering visiting a traditional healer to seek revenge. Yet, as she spoke through her grief, she broke down in tears and realized that she could no longer bear the hatred in her heart. She chose to forgive. Her decision did not erase what happened or the pain she continues to carry; it was a personal step towards refusing to let hatred define the rest of her life.

Another participant, whom we will call “Zaitun”, shared how she and her daughter had suffered sexual violence and subsequently faced serious health consequences. Their circumstances became so difficult that they withdrew from Church and resorted to prostitution to survive. During the workshop, however, mother and daughter returned to Church. Moved to tears, they expressed a desire to change their lives and seek medical attention. Their story became a reminder that, even after profound suffering, a person can begin to seek help, dignity and a new direction.

For Ave Maria Mission, this workshop is just the beginning. With greater support, collaboration and commitment, more initiatives can reach people who continue to live with the effects of war, displacement and trauma. The needs are many: healing, medical care, psychological support, education, reconciliation, economic recovery, community support and, above all, hope.

This workshop at Ave Maria Mission was the beginning. With continued support and commitment, may this journey of healing be repeated, expanded and carried to many more communities - one person, one family and one community at a time.

Visita a las misiones de la MCSPA: La vivencia de un Dios vivo

Este viaje empezó gracias a nuestra tía, Sarai Zavala que es misionera de la Comunidad Misionera de San Pablo Apóstol desde hace 23 años. Ella fue quien nos invitó a conocer de cerca Etiopía, las personas y, sobre todo, la misión a la que ha dedicado su vida. Viajamos desde México, su hermana Yadira, nuestro tío abuelo Salvador —que además tuvo la suerte de celebrar sus 91 años en Etiopía— y nosotros, Aranzazú y Samuel.

Hasta ese momento, la misión era algo que conocíamos principalmente a través de lo que nuestra tía nos contaba cuando venía a México. Pero estar ahí fue completamente diferente. Por primera vez pudimos ver con nuestros propios ojos cómo es su día a día y entender un poco mejor por qué decidió entregar su vida a los demás.

Desde que llegamos a Addis Abeba nos sentimos recibidos como en familia. Las misioneras que conocemos desde toda nuestra vida, 17 y 23 años respectivamente, nos acogieron con muchísimo cariño.

Nuestra primera visita fue a la misión de Dakuna, en Endibir. Allí las misioneras nos enseñaron el lugar y nos explicaron el trabajo que realizan con la comunidad. Después fuimos a Muketurri, donde pudimos involucrarnos un poco más y ayudar, junto con las voluntarias que se encontraban ahí, en algunas de las actividades con los niños del centro materno infantil y de los comedores infantiles en las aldeas aledañas.
Finalmente llegamos a Mizan Teferi. Allí conocimos a los niños de la guardería y también a niños que viven en situación de calle, a los que las misioneras se vuelcan para darles un mejor futuro.

El viaje nos ha impactado profundamente, nuestros corazones fueron testigos de algo verdaderamente extraordinario: personas que, con entrega y generosidad, dedican su vida a ayudar, inspirar y acompañar a quienes más lo necesitan. Ha sido una experiencia invaluable y conmovedora, en la que pudimos sentir de cerca el amor y la pasión que se respiran en cada una de las misiones que visitamos: Endibir, Muketurri y Mizan Teferi. Aunque cada una desarrolla una labor distinta, todas comparten un mismo propósito: construir una comunidad unida como hermanos e hijos de Dios.

También nos impresionó descubrir que las misiones están abiertas a todos, sin importar su religión. Todas buscan construir comunidades capaces de salir adelante juntas, donde cada persona pueda aportar su granito de arena.

Gracias al esfuerzo constante, la dedicación y el compromiso de todas las personas que forman parte de la misión, los frutos de su entrega llegan cada vez más lejos, alcanzando a más personas y tocando cada corazón que encuentran en su camino.

Haber sido testigos de esta labor nos deja una huella imborrable y nos inspira a ser mejores seres humanos, recordándonos que el servicio, la solidaridad y el amor al prójimo tienen el poder de transformar vidas y construir un mundo mejor.

Nos hemos dado cuenta de que lo que las misioneras logran es que las personas se sientan agradecidas y escuchadas ante sus necesidades, lo que construye un puente a una fe en la que las personas se unen por el propósito de ayudar al prójimo. Porque para ayudar al prójimo no tienes por qué empezar con algo enorme, se puede empezar simplemente con la decisión de mirar a la persona que tienes delante, escucharla y estar dispuesta a hacer algo por ella. Y para nosotros eso fue encontrarnos con un Dios vivo.

Visit to the MCSPA Missions: Experiencing a Living God

This trip came about thanks to our aunt, Sarai Zavala, who has been a missionary with the Missionary Community of St. Paul the Apostle for 23 years. She was the one who invited us to get to know Ethiopia up close, Its people and, above all, the mission to which she has dedicated her life. We traveled from Mexico, her sister Yadira, our great uncle Salvador (who was also lucky enough to celebrate his 91st birthday in Ethiopia), and us, Aranzazú and Samuel.

Until then, the mission was something we knew mainly through what our aunt told us when she came to Mexico. But being there was completely different. For the first time, we were able to see with our own eyes what her daily life is like and understand a little better why she decided to devote her life to others.

From the moment we arrived in Addis Ababa, we felt welcomed as if we were family. The missionaries we’ve known our whole lives—17 and 23 years, respectively—welcomed us with so much warmth.

Our first visit was to Dakuna mission in Endibir. There, the missionaries showed us around and explained the work they do with the community. Then we went to Muketurri, where we were able to get a little more involved and help, along with the volunteers who were there, with some of the activities for the children at the Mother and Child Center and at the nutricional units in the surrounding villages.

We finally arrived at Mizan Teferi. There, we met the children at the daycare center as well as children living on the streets, whom the missionaries are fully committed to helping build a better future.

The trip had a profound impact on us; our hearts witnessed something truly extraordinary: people who, with dedication and generosity, devote their lives to helping, inspiring, and supporting those who need it most. It has been an invaluable and moving experience, during which we were able to feel firsthand the love and passion that permeate each of the missions we visited: Endibir, Muketurri, and Mizan Teferi. Although each carries out a different mission, they all share the same purpose: to build a united community as brothers and sisters, children of God.

We were also impressed to discover that the missions are open to everyone, regardless of religion. They all seek to build communities capable of moving forward together, where each person can do their part.

Thanks to the constant effort, dedication, and commitment of everyone who is part of the mission, the fruits of their devotion are reaching farther and farther, touching more people and every heart they encounter along the way.

Having witnessed this work leaves an indelible mark on us and inspires us to be better human beings, reminding us that service, solidarity, and love for our neighbors have the power to transform lives and build a better world.

We have come to realize that what the missionaries achieve is making people feel grateful and heard when it comes to their needs, which builds a bridge to a faith in which people come together for the purpose of helping others. Because to help others, you don’t have to start with something huge, you can simply begin with the decision to look at the person in front of you, listen to them, and be willing to do something for them. And for us, that meant encountering a living God.

Inauguración de La Casa de Filosofía de San Agustín de la MCSPA en Balaka, Malawi

La alegría y la felicidad reflejadas en los rostros de los miembros y aprendices de la Comunidad Misionera de San Pablo Apóstol lo decía todo, lucía también en todos los presentes. La canción de entrada recitaba con alegría: «¡Chaka! ¡Chaka! Lero kuli chaka», que significa «¡Alégrense! ¡Alégrense! Hoy es un gran día», y lo fue, en cuanto comenzó la procesión de la misa.

En la tarde del 30 de julio, la MCSPA expandió su huella con la inauguración de nuestra primera Casa de Formación en Filosofía —el Filosofado de San Agustín— en Balaka, diócesis de Mangochi, Malawi. Se trata, sin duda, de un hito dentro del crecimiento que estamos viviendo en la MCSPA. Para nuestra mayor alegría, la presidenta de la MCSPA, Scholastica Wamalwa, pudo estar presente, junto con otros miembros de la Comunidad, y participar de la celebración.

La inauguración comenzó a última hora de la tarde con una misa presidida por el reverendísimo Montfort Sitima, obispo de la diócesis de Mangochi. El obispo comenzó bendiciendo la iglesia, y los demás sacerdotes le siguieron bendiciendo todo el recinto. Sacerdotes y seminaristas de seis congregaciones avivaron la celebración participando en el coro y en la inauguración en su conjunto.

En su homilía, el obispo Montfort estableció una analogía con la casa del alfarero del Libro del profeta Jeremías, enfatizando la importancia de moldear vidas con cuidado y una intención clara. Esta bendición significó algo más que un nuevo edificio; significó un lugar de auténtica formación humana.

Rezamos para que todos los que pasen por esta casa salgan de ella moldeados y formados, fortalecidos y preparados para servir como misioneros en el carisma de la MCSPA.

Scholastica Wamalwa agradeció al obispo Montfort por acoger a la MCSPA en Balaka. También expresó su agradecimiento a la Sociedad de Misioneros de Montfort por acoger a nuestros primeros seminaristas y a los padres Manuel Hernández y Fernando Aguirre por conseguir la financiación y llevar a cabo la construcción de los edificios del Filosofado de San Agustín.

Inauguration of MCSPA’s St. Augustine’s Philosophate at Balaka, Malawi

The joy and happiness on the faces of the members and apprentices of the Missionary Community of St. Paul the Apostle, as well as the people present, were evident. The entrance hymn, ”Chaka! Chaka! Lero kuli chaka,” meaning “Rejoice! Rejoice! Today is a big day,” sang of joy as the procession of the Mass began.

On this evening of July 30, the MCSPA expanded its footprint by opening its first Formation House for Philosophy, St. Augustine’s Philosophate, at Balaka, in Mangochi Diocese, Malawi. This milestone marks the continued growth of the MCSPA. The President of the MCSPA, Scholastica Wamalwa, along with other members, were present to witness this celebration.

The inauguration began in the late afternoon with Mass led by Rt. Rev. Montfort Sitima, Bishop of Mangochi Diocese. The Bishop blessed the church and the compound, and priests and seminarians from all six congregations enlivened the celebration by participating in the choir and the inauguration.

In his homily, Bishop Montfort drew an analogy from the potter’s house in the Book of Jeremiah, emphasising the importance of moulding lives with care and intention. This blessing marked more than a new building; it marked a place of genuine human formation.

We pray that everyone who enters this house will leave moulded and formed, stronger and ready to serve as missionaries in the charism of the MCSPA.

Scholastica Wamalwa thanked Bishop Montfort for welcoming the MCSPA in Balaka and the Society of Montfort Missionaries for welcoming our first seminarians. She also recognised the efforts of Frs. Manuel Hernandez and Fernando Aguirre in sourcing funding and building the buildings of St. Augustine’s Philosophate.
