*ST. MATTHIAS MULUMBA SCC MARKS FEAST DAY WITH MASS AND CHARITY FOR ELDERLY PARISHIONERS*

_Lodwar Diocese, May 30, 2026_ – St. Matthias Mulumba Small Christian Community celebrated their patron’s feast day with worship and service right in church, honoring elderly parishioners.

The day began with a solemn Holy Mass at Holy spirit Parish, attended by SCC members, families, neighbors, and elderly parishioners who were guests of honor. The Mass, led by Rev.Fr. Charles Kapengi, reflected on the faith and courage of St. Matthias Mulumba, the Ugandan martyr.

After Mass, the celebration continued inside the church compound. SCC members distributed *maize flour, cooking oil, beans, rice, and new Maasai sheets* to the elderly parishioners present.

The day ended with fellowship as members and the elderly shared a meal together in the church hall. They prepared, served, and ate side by side, sharing stories and laughter.

How We Celebrated Pentecost Day in Our Parish

The morning of Pentecost dawned bright and expectant. Red and white decorations lined the church, and the sound of choir practice filled the air as people arrived in their best clothes. This year was special – Rt. Rev. John Mbinda, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Lodwar, had come to preside over our Holy Mass and administer the Sacrament of Confirmation.

The celebration began early with the blessing and official opening of the Marian Grotto. The grotto, completed after two years of struggle and sacrifice from the parish community, was sprinkled with holy water by Bishop Mbinda as he led the first Marian prayer at the site. There was a deep sense of gratitude and fulfillment as it was opened as a quiet place for prayer and pilgrimage.

Mass began at 9:00 a.m. with a joyful procession into the church. The choir led us in singing _“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful,”_ and the entire congregation joined in. Bishop Mbinda walked in wearing red vestments, a reminder of the fire of the Holy Spirit that descended on the Apostles. In his homily, he spoke about Pentecost as the birthday of the Church and urged us to be bold witnesses of Christ in our families, workplaces, and community.

The highlight came after the homily when 47 candidates from our parish stepped forward for Confirmation. One by one, Bishop Mbinda anointed their foreheads with chrism, saying, _“Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.”_ For many parents and grandparents, it was an emotional moment – a sign of faith being passed to the next generation.

After Mass, Sr. Agnes Rotich launched her book, _Whispers to the Soul_, sharing how the reflections were born out of prayer and her years of service. Many parishioners lined up to get copies and receive her blessing.

The rest of the day continued outside with singing, dancing, and sharing meals.

BISHOP JOHN MAHON.

Do You Know Who Bishop John Mahon Was? Or have we slowly forgotten one of the greatest men ever to walk on the soil of Turkana?

Was born in Ireland on Christmas Day in 1922 and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1948 under St. Patrick’s Missionary Society. After teaching Canon Law in Ireland and serving in Nigeria, he was sent to Lodwar in 1968 as the first Prefect Apostolic of the newly established Catholic mission in Turkana.

When he arrived in Lodwar, Turkana was forgotten, dry, isolated, and struggling with extreme poverty and hunger. There were only TWO Catholic mission stations in the entire region: Kakuma and Lorugumu. Few priests. Few sisters. No development. No proper roads. No reliable water.

But this humble Irish missionary chose to stay with the people.

He walked with the Turkana people during famine.
He fought for their dignity when nobody listened.
He built schools so children could study.
He started health centres so the sick could be treated.
He encouraged water projects and irrigation schemes to fight hunger.
He supported fishing projects along Lake Turkana to help families survive.

And because of his dedication, the Diocese of Lodwar grew from only 2 mission stations into more than 22 parishes with vibrant Christian communities.

Many priests serving in Lodwar today passed through foundations laid by Bishop Mahon. Many local vocations and ordained priests rose through the mission structures he established and strengthened in Turkana.

One thing that touched me deeply is this:
Bishop Mahon once said that you cannot expect hungry people to listen to the Gospel before touching their suffering first. That is why he dedicated his life not only to preaching, but also to feeding the hungry and restoring human dignity.

He served Turkana for 32 years until his retirement in 2000, and when he died in 2004, he was buried in the soil of Turkana — the land and people he loved with complete dedication.
