Title: THE WANING MORALITY
We cannot legislate morality. However, have much to worry about when we consider the environment, the public ethos, in which we raise our children. Our society is made up of a network of institutions, cultural beliefs, mores, and habits. Individuals live in environments in which certain ideas prevail, certain messages are sent. And these messages act to encourage or discourage particular attitudes and behaviours.
It makes an enormous difference, for example, whether our children get messages from television telling them that honesty is the best policy, and to honour their fathers and mothers---or messages telling them that adultery is the norm, and that the abuse of others is an expected thing.
Likewise if schools, churches, elected leaders, community organisations, and neighbourhood are reinforcing parents' efforts, it makes their jobs easier.
If the institutions of society work at cross-purpose (as they often have over the last two decades), the job is harder.
No man is a good citizen alone, Plato teaches us in his dialogue 'Gorgias'. Make no mistake! This hormorage of tongue as witnessed today, is an indicator of the course our morality taking.
Lets tame it before it sinks our nation. Thanks.
