OUR HIGH CALLING
The Bible speaks clearly about a divine and heavenly calling placed upon every believer. In Philippians 3:14, the apostle Paul declares, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” This high calling is not an ordinary invitation; it is God’s upward call to salvation, transformation, holiness, and eternal glory through Christ. It is a call that lifts us from earthly thinking to heavenly purpose.
Scripture further describes this as a heavenly calling. In Hebrews 3:1, believers are referred to as “partakers of the heavenly calling.” This reminds us that our citizenship is in heaven and that our lives should reflect eternal values rather than temporary pleasures. We are called out of darkness into God’s marvelous light, and our focus must remain on things above, not merely on earthly concerns.
Our high calling is also a call to holiness. The Word of God says in 1 Thessalonians 4:7, “For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.” Holiness means living a life separated from sin and dedicated to God’s will. It means allowing our character, speech, and conduct to reflect the nature of Christ. As believers, we are called to be different from the world because we belong to a holy God.
Moreover, this calling involves transformation into the likeness of Christ. According to Romans 8:29, God’s purpose is that we be conformed to the image of His Son. The high calling is not simply about escaping judgment or entering heaven; it is about becoming more like Christ in love, humility, obedience, and service. Each day, we are being shaped by God to reflect His Son’s character.
The Scriptures also teach that this calling is royal and purposeful. In 1 Peter 2:9, believers are described as “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation.” This shows that we are chosen by God and entrusted with the responsibility of representing Him on earth. Our lives should proclaim His goodness and shine as lights in a dark world.
Because this calling is high, it demands worthy living. In Ephesians 4:1, Paul urges believers to “walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.” Walking worthy involves humility, patience, love, faithfulness, and perseverance. It means pressing forward despite trials, just as Paul continued steadfastly toward the prize.
Finally, our high calling carries a glorious reward. In Revelation 2:10, the promise is given, “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” The high calling ends in eternal life, righteousness, and reigning with Christ. The One who calls us is faithful, and He will complete the work He has begun in us.
Therefore, let us cherish this high calling, live in obedience to it, and press forward with determination. Our calling is heavenly, holy, transformative, royal, and eternal. May we remain faithful until we receive the prize prepared for those who love Him.
