Surah al-Hujurat - Reflection 13
The Bond of Iman
• This verse establishes a decisive principle: true brotherhood is founded upon īmān. It calls believers to love, harmony, and mutual care, and firmly warns against conflict, hatred, and fighting. When discord does arise, the Qurʾān does not leave hearts to harden; rather, it commands reconciliation and the mending of hearts after estrangement.
• The word “only” in the verse indicates restriction: there is no real brotherhood except between believers. This bond of īmān is stronger than ties of blood, for kinship loses its value when severed from īmān, while the brotherhood of religion endures even when lineage does not.
• Brotherhood in dīn is firmer than brotherhood in lineage, and this meaning was powerfully affirmed by the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
“The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim: he does not wrong him nor abandon him. Whoever fulfils the need of his brother, Allah fulfils his need…” (Bukhārī).
In another narration, he ﷺ likened the believers in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion to a single body: when one part suffers, the whole body responds with wakefulness and fever (Muslim).
Reflect: Along with feeling deeply concerned for the global Ummah, don’t forget that the business partner you fall out with is also your brother, the difficult uncle in the masjid is also part of the Ummah, and a believer who may not be affiliated to the same scholars as you is also a member of this Ummah.
Act: Righteousness is not limited to ṣalāh and fasting. Supporting the Ummah and standing up for the oppressed are essential parts of the dīn. Develop a deep sense of responsibility towards the Ummah and commit yourself to a cause that contributes to its betterment.
