The Dr. Frankenstein of ‘Monster Shoes’

その靴には――歯が生えていた。（まるでホラー映画のキャッチコピーのように）

今年一月、パリで行われたDoubletのショーに足を運んだ私は、ランウェイに現れたモデルたちの足元を見て思わず目を細めた。餌をねだるブラックバスの口のようにぐいと反り返ったドレスシューズのつま先。その上下には金属製の歯が小さく整列し、開いた“顎”の内側に潜むのは、磨き上げられた舌のように艶やかな赤だった。

この大きな口を構えた靴を“モンスターシューズ”と呼ぶのは、山本真太郎。彼はここ数年で最も型破りなドレスシューズを次々と作ってきた“革靴界のドクター・フランケンシュタイン”だ。

Comme des Garçons Homme Plus とのコラボレーションでは、24SSシーズンに二階建てバスのようにアッパーが二段重なったダービーシューズを発表したかと思えば、25AWシーズンではつま先をきっかり九十度に突き立てたコンバットブーツまで縫い上げた。

「正統派である必要は、もう感じていないんです」

「もっと自由に考えていい」

自由――それは山本の人生を貫くモチーフだ。十代の頃、両親に言われるままイングランド南部の寄宿学校へ送られたが肌に合わず、退学してロンドンへ流れ着いた。そこで彼は、1980年代後半に短いながらもカルト的な人気を博した House of Beauty and Culture（HOBAC）を創設したデザイナー、ジョン・ムーアの作品に心を奪われる。

ムーアの靴は、分厚いハード・ボトムにいく筋ものストラップを走らせ、包丁で断ち落としたようなスクエアトウを備え、"靴はこうあるべき"という既成概念を粉々に破壊していた。ムーアが1989年に亡くなった後にロンドンへ来た山本は、ムーアの精神を受け継ぐ職人ダイタ・キムラに弟子入りし、靴づくりを学んだ。そして2000年に東京へ戻り、やがてKIDS LOVE GAITEをスタートさせることになる。

はじめのうちは自分のパンクな衝動を靴に注ぎ込むのに苦労したというが、「この数年でようやく、自分のアイデンティティを靴に注ぎ込むことが出来るようになってきたんです」と山本は言う。オフィスの壁にはセックス・ピストルズや英国のアート・デュオ ギルバート&ジョージのポスターがあり、机の横にはジョン・ムーアのホッグ・トウが鎮座している。

彼はそれをひょいと掲げて、「ほら、こうやって平らに削ったつま先が出発点なんですよ」と私に見せた。

二段構えのダービーシューズは、袖を二枚重ねたComme des Garçons Homme Plus のシャツを見て、「これを靴で表現してみよう」と思いついたもの。
L字につま先を立てたコンバットブーツは"War is Hell"というコレクションの一部で、戦いを終えて倒れたブーツをイメージしたという。それは同時に、ムーアのホッグトウへのオマージュでもあり、山本はオフィスの机の脇にその一足を大切に置いている。

Doubletのデザイナー井野将之はメールにこう記した。

「彼は二次元のスケッチを完璧な三次元へ仕立てあげるんです」

井野は山本と二度タッグを組んでいる。"歯つき"シューズのアイデアは、ホラー映画ではジーンズや冷蔵庫、果てはコンドームすら牙をむいて人を襲うと言う井野の着想から始まり、山本がそれを履ける商業製品にしてみせた。

「彼はレザーシューズの伝統を大切にしながら、絶えず進化を続けています」と井野は言う。

こうした奇妙で素晴らしい作品には、少なからず手縫いを必要とする。Doublet の歯つきシューズでは、アッパーの"上顎"を手縫いで固定し、常に口が開いたままになるよう仕上げた。試作品もすべてハンドメイドだ。

手仕事ゆえに価格も自ずと高額になるが、Comme des Garçonsとの協業をきっかけに、パリで初めて行った展示会でも想像以上のオーダーが入り、「普通じゃない靴」を求める顧客が増えたことを実感したという。

こうした独創的で突き抜けたシューズを作る山本に「自分の仕事をどう説明する？」と聞くと、彼は肩をすくめて言った。

「"Leather shoes"――革靴ですよ」

歯が生えていようが、二足分が重なっていようが、靴はやっぱり靴。彼はそう言って笑う。

自由な風を受け舵を切った革靴たちは、今夜もどこかでそっと口を開け、赤い舌を覗かせている。そこに足を滑り込ませる者が現れるのを、かすかな歯音を立てながら待っているのだ。

Yamamoto, of Tokyo, is the designer behind the most form-shattering, smirk-inducing dress shoes in recent memory. In collaboration with Comme des Garçons Homme Plus, he has made derbies with two uppers stacked on top of each other, like double-decker buses, and combat boots with toes pointed straight up in the air at perfect 90-degree angles.

At his own label, , he has made shoes with white skeleton bones painted on the cap and ones with an extra leather sliver sandwiched in the sole and protruding out the front, like a curled-up tongue.

Yamamoto said that only in the last handful of years had he “started putting my identity into the shoes.” And doing so has led to some wondrous and wild footwear.
