📖 Course Review | CH820-11: Documents, Doctrines, and Eras: Scottish Reformation and Post-Reformation Pastoral Theology and Spirituality

We were honored to welcome Dr. David G. Whitla, Professor of Church History at Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, to teach this course at CRTS.

Drawing on his extensive research in the Scottish Reformation and Puritan tradition, Dr. Whitla guided students through the historical, theological, and pastoral legacy of Scottish Presbyterianism. In addition to the course, he also delivered a public evening lecture, "In Pursuit of Joy: The Puritan Experience and Treatment of Depression," exploring how seventeenth-century Puritan pastors cared for those struggling with depression and spiritual suffering. The lecture was both historically insightful and pastorally enriching.

One student shared:

"Through this class, I have gained a deeper appreciation for the Scottish pastors and saints, especially during the Reformation and Post-Reformation era. I have come to appreciate how they ministered to their parishioners and how they practiced the Christian life both corporately and personally. They took their Christian life very seriously, even when they were persecuted and suffered for their faith. This is something that some of us who live in a free country do not always consider carefully.

I am also reminded that these men and women whom the Lord used greatly in their time were human beings like us (James 5:17). They had their own weaknesses and faults, and therefore they should be appreciated with balance.

Great class!"

We thank God for faithful teachers who help us learn from the rich heritage of the Reformed faith and encourage us to serve Christ faithfully in our own generation.
