𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗕𝗟𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗗 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗬𝗥 𝗙𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗢 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗢 | 𝗦𝗘𝗣𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝟮𝟰
Today, we joyfully commemorate the 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘆𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗼 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗼, a priest whose life became a profound witness to 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵, 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲.
Born in Italy in 1924, Francesco Spoto grew in a Catholic environment and eventually answered the call to the priesthood. He was ordained in 1951 and became known as a 𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿, a serious student, an obedient and persevering religious, and a zealous priest devoted to serving the Church.
At only 40 years old, he was entrusted with the responsibility of serving as 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 of his Congregation. His leadership was marked by concern for vocations, the growth of the Congregation, and the missionaries entrusted to his care.
In 1964, despite the dangers brought by the civil war in the Congo, Fr. Francesco went to visit and encourage the missionaries under his care. He knew the risks, but 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿.
He was captured and brutally beaten by the Simba rebels. Though gravely wounded, he continued to live long enough to 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗺. On December 27, 1964, he offered his life to God, dying as a martyr in the Congolese mission.
His life reminds us that holiness is not always found in extraordinary deeds. Sometimes, holiness is found in 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲.
His witness can be summed up in the words:
“Take my life and spare that of my brothers.”
“Prendi la mia vita e risparmia quella dei miei fratelli.”
May Blessed Francesco Spoto teach us that the true meaning of life is not found in keeping everything for ourselves, but in 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀.
May his courage inspire us to remain faithful in difficulties, his forgiveness challenge us to let go of resentment, and his selfless love remind us that 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱.
𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗼 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗼, 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘆𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀.
