Thyagraj Jagannath Mandir, Delhi Established in 1968, Shri Jagannath Mandir in Thyagraj Nagar, New Delhi, is the oldest Jagannath temple in Delhi/NCR. K. P. C. Das, Ex M. Ex Prof.

Located Opposite Thyagraj Stadium near INA and Jorbagh Metro stations, it attracts thousands of devotees from Delhi and nearby regions. It was the year 1946, when our country was on the eve of independence, that a few odia members of the Central Assembly together with odia employees of the Central Government, Government offices met at Rouse Avenue and decided to form an Association of the odias in

Delhi with the primary objective of promoting the rich cultural and heritage of Odisha in the capital. The Association named 'Utkal Association' was formed in April 1946, with late Shri Krupasindhu Misra,I.C.S. as its President and Sri Krushna Chandra Palai as its Secretary. At that time, there were hardly a few hundred odias residing in Delhi, majority of whom were engaged in masonry work. Gradually the number began to increase and by 1950, there were about 300 to 400 odia settled in Delhi. Gradually the activities of the Association gathered momentum. The then Executive Committee drafted a constitution of the Association, which was later approved by the General Body. The Association was renamed as 'The Odiya Samaj'. It was decided to get the Association registered with the relevent registration authority of the Delhi Administration and the Samaj was registered in November 1951. The Odisha Association was formed in 1952 with Late Dr. H. Mahatab as patron, Late Shri Jagannath Das,M. as its President and Shri Sukhdev Das as its Secretary and Association was named as 'The Odisha club',Delhi. At that time there was hardly a few hundreds odias residing in Delhi. Shri Baikunth Das, a sanyashi who was working in Statantra Bharat Cotton Mill, Karampura, Delhi, on request by the association located a site for the temple in 1968 along with Shri Sukhdev Das and late Shri Sukhdev Biswal. Late Shri Jagannath Rao, the then Union Minister of Works & Housing advised to build a temple on this site. The Odisha Club was dissolved and by consent of the general body, the association took the name of Shri Jagannath Mandir and Odisha Arts & Culture Centre, Delhi (Regd.). With the blessings and good wishes of the odia residents of Delhi, the foundation Stone of the temple was on laid on 15.01.1968 (Makar Sankranti) by Sanyasi Baikunth Das. The construction of temple was started on 5th February 1968 and small idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabadra, Maa Subhadra and Sudarsan were placed inside it. Then Association during 1982 approached Late Shri Braj Mohan Mohanty, the then Union State Minister (Works Housing & Land) along with Shri A. (Lok Sabha), President of Association and Shri Sukhadev Das,Vice-President, late Shri Sukhdev Biswal, Secretary and Sri G. C Biswal, Treasurer for regularization of land allotment. To augment our funds in 1986 a Dharmashala was built with about 18 rooms to accommodate temporary visitors from Odisha. After a few years the then Ex Chief Justice of India Shri R.N. Mishra laid the foundation stone of the new structure of the temple on 23.1.1991. It took about seven years to complete this construction by odia masons from Nayagarh, Odisha. The construction was completed under the supervision of late Shri Sukhdev Biswal and Shri Gopal Chandra Biswal. Shri Diby Singh Deo, Gajapati Maharaja of Puri was Karta on Pratishtha Ceremony on 28.01.1999. The big idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Maa Subhadra and Sudarshan were brought from Puri. During this occasion the idols were given Jeevan-nas by Rajguru of Puri and a Maha Yagnya was performed by Vedantic Brahmins for six days and culminated in poorna ahooti by Gajapati Maharaja of Puri. On this occasion Shri Dilip Ray, Ex Minister of State (Coal), was the Chief Guest. Gauri Kumar Brahama delivered discourses on Shri Jagannath Dharma and Sanskruti in the evenings of six days.
